Dublin's winning University Challenge captain on revising everything and the reaction back home
Oscar Despard, a PHD student in Cambridge, said he had the idea of one day appearing on the show for some time, but was still surprised when he led his team to victory.
In last night's closely contested final, Christ's College won the competition over the University of Warwick 175 – 170.
'We got the first question, and thought maybe this will be smooth enough,' Despard told
The Journal
. 'But then they just steamed ahead, kept beating us to questions where we thought we knew the answer, and we were trying to butt in. But they were just quicker than us for the first maybe ten minutes.
'I think that kind of reversed towards the end. I think they also knew the questions that we were getting right towards the end, but were just a few seconds too late.'
Despard's team won a narrow victory in the show's final yesterday evening.

Yesterday, his family and friends at home gathered in Despard's old sailing club in Dún Laoghaire to watch the final and see Despard take the trophy for Cambridge, presented by actor Ian McKellan.
In Cambridge, Despard and his team watched the final in the one of the university's lecture theatres, where there was a big reception planned afterwards.
'There was a bigger audience, I must say, than I that I could have expected last night in the college to watch it.'
The reaction from home has been immense.
President Michael D Higgins issued his congratulations, saying today, 'Congratulations to Oscar Despard on captaining his team from Christ's College, Cambridge, to victory in the final of University Challenge.'
'My mother's got even more [messages] than I had from all her colleagues at work and her friends,' Despard said. 'I've been surprised at the amount of attention it's gotten – it's all very positive though.'
Despard's mother is Professor Niamh Moran of RCSI, while his father runs the popular Bretzel Bakery in Portobello. Through marriage, he is also related to activist and novelist

Quiz: Could you make it to the University Challenge final?
Christ's College were caught out when a question on Premier League popped up in another episode, but they made great efforts to revise for the programme.
'We try to kind of cover as much as we can,' Despard said. 'Part of it is in selecting the team, we try to select a group of people who all have complimentary knowledge, so that you try to cover as much as possible.'
Despard's team was made up of three others: Brendan Bethlehem (Linguistics), Linus Luu (Maths), and Anniko Firman (Classics).
The team made a spreadsheet with topics and items to revise, divvying out various areas to study in depth. The questions can span so widely that the team had someone revising video games, he said.
'I mean, to be honest, revision helps a little bit, but also most of the time, you'll get things that are the things you happen to know and have collected over years, gathering random facts.'
Once a student has appeared on University Challenge, even if only for one episode, they are then excluded from participating again. Despard said that he may have some role in encouraging his university's team next year.
In the meantime, he is continuing his studies for his PHD in molecular biology, and enjoys taking part in quizzes off-screen.

BBC says Ozzy Osbourne documentary was delayed to respect 'family's wishes'
The BBC has said it delayed airing a new documentary about late Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne in order to respect his "family's wishes". Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home was due to be shown on BBC One at 9pm on Monday but was replaced with an episode of Fake Or Fortune? with the broadcaster saying the documentary had been "moved in the schedules". In a statement on Tuesday, a BBC spokesperson said: "Our sympathies are with the Osbourne family at this difficult time. We are respecting the family's wishes to wait a bit longer before airing this very special film. "The new TX (transmission) date will be confirmed shortly." The hour-long documentary will show the late singer reuniting with the band on stage as part of the Back To The Beginning farewell concert in Birmingham, which he died just weeks later, aged 76, on 22 July from a reported heart attack. The film was originally conceived as a series, announced in 2022 and called Home To Roost, and was to document Osbourne and his wife Sharon's move back from the US, where they had lived for more than two decades, to rural Buckinghamshire. But the project "evolved as Ozzy's health deteriorated" into the one-hour film, the BBC said. The documentary sees the story of the concert told through "unique and intimate access to the whole Osbourne family", including Sharon, and their children Kelly and Jack. It was filmed over three years and "captures the extraordinary rollercoaster of their lives" as the famous couple "attempt to complete their long-held dream of moving back to the UK", the BBC has said. Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home also captures the musician as he "heroically battles to get fit enough to perform" and the family dealing with "the dramatic consequences of his ill health", with Kelly quoted as saying in the film: "Iron Man wasn't really made of iron." The rocker had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019. Last month, fans gathered alongside Osbourne's family to pay tribute to the star as a funeral cortege travelled through Birmingham. Sharon and the couple's children could be seen wiping away tears when they arrived at the Black Sabbath bench, where thousands of tributes, balloons and flowers were left. Musicians from Bostin Brass played Black Sabbath songs to accompany the cortege, and fans threw flowers at the hearse as it passed slowly through the city.

Tommy Fury says he was intoxicated when Molly-Mae Hague walked out on him
Reality TV star Tommy Fury has said he does not remember what it felt like when his fiancee Molly Mae-Hague walked out on him with their daughter Bambi, as he was intoxicated. The boxer, 26, who met Hague on ITV dating show Love Island, speaks about his struggles with alcohol dependency in his new BBC Three docu-series, Tommy: The Good, The Bad, The Fury. In episode one he says: 'I've never even said this before, but when they'd actually left the house, I was actually drunk at that point, so I don't actually remember it that well, which was even more upsetting. 'I woke up. I was like shit, and I was listening to probably the silence of the house for like an hour. I was like, f***. And that was the last time they've been here. 'I'm not going to lie and say I knew the feeling of what it was like when they walked out, I didn't because I was intoxicated. 'But no matter how drunk I was, as long as Bambi's routine stayed the same, I'd still be up in the morning, quarter past seven, making a bottle in the microwave, doing the milk, getting her up, bringing her down, making her breakfast. 'I'm still doing all that and, in my mind, if I could keep my fatherly duties going everything else will be OK.' Also in the episode, Fury denies allegations of cheating that were spread online, and emphasises that the breakdown of their relationship was because of his problems with alcohol. Tommy Fury and his daughter Bambi (BBC/Optomen Television Limited/PA) Fury, who is the half-brother of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, and Hague, 26, were runners up on Love Island in 2019, and announced their engagement in July 2023. In August 2024, they said that the relationship had ended, in separate social media messages, with Fury saying he was 'heartbroken' to share the news. In an episode of her Prime Video docuseries, Behind It All, Hague spoke about how his drinking had affected their relationship, and in series two she gave an update on their future, saying that they have something 'worth saving'. In his new TV series the boxer 'bares all about the demons that drove him to drink' and tries to prove to Hague that he is 'a dependable father and partner once again', according to a description from the BBC. The series also looks at his boxing career, which took a backseat amid his hand surgery in January 2024. Speaking to the PA news agency, Fury said: 'I feel like whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger and that year of 2024 was the toughest year by far. 'It's a long way behind me now. I'm not that person any more, and I feel like everything's a lesson.' Part one of Tommy: The Good, The Bad, The Fury will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three on Tuesday August 19, with part two scheduled for later in the year.

She posed for revealing snaps outside the stadium and filmed videos with other fans ahead of the game. But after asking them for their score predictions, Shania alleges she tried to enter Old Trafford. In a video posted on social media, she said: "I am not even joking I am fuming. "I just went to Old Trafford to watch the first game of the season and they did not even let me in because of the way that I am dressed. "What is wrong with the way I am dressed? "This is an actual joke. I am going to be putting in an official complaint. I am not even joking." Shania also met up with Gunners fan Arabella Mia before the game. She is another adult star who previously went viral for turning up to the Emirates in bodypaint resembling an Arsenal shirt. Arabella posted a clip of them together outside the stadium, saying: "Come all the way to Old Trafford and I have got some b**** doing the same thing as me. "F***ing hell. Would look better in an Arsenal top though." Despite much criticism, Arabella claims her antics are helping women break into the football space.
