Kim Kardashian finally graduates from law school

On 21 May 2025, the family and friends of media mogul, Kim Kardashian, took to Instagram to share news that the star had graduated from law school. Kardashian herself has been sharing her passion for criminal justice reform with fans for years through her reality TV show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
'All of you have been on this journey with me. It started with the Twitter video that I saw that popped up and I was just dumbfounded', said Kardashian
She has publicly spoken about failing the bar three times in her pursuit of a law degree. Despite of the failures however, she said she has been involved in criminal justice reform since 2018. THE STORY OF ALICE JOHNSON
On 28 August 2020, Alice Marie Johnson received a presidential pardon on her sentence related to a drug offense. According to Johnson, this was after a series of events where the media mogul got to know of her story and began working towards getting her released from prison.
Through criminal justice initiatives, Kardashian approached president Donald Trump about Johnson's case. At the time, Johnson had served 21 years in prison.
Today Johnson runs a criminal reform project, where according to her website, she continues to get deserving women out of jail. In an interview with Fox News, Johnson credited the new law graduate for assisting her to make her efforts successful.
'I can always depend on her, that if I'm running into a brickwall, that she will help', said Johnson.
Speaking at Kardashian's graduation ceremony that was held in her backyard, CCN journalist Van Jones, said when the star started this journey, it was a lonely road.
'Seven years ago when you were working on criminal justice, you were not embraced by anyone', said Jones.
'You were working with people who were thrown away by their own families. You were working with people who were literally just one step from the grave. There's no place to be in society except the graveyard, than to be thrown away in a prison cell for years and years', he continued.
Jones said with her newly acquired degree, Kardashian was about to be unstoppable.
'She helped reunite families and brought national attention to the most broken parts of our legal system. Now she does so not with just passion and determination but with six years of legal training', Jones concluded.
WOULD YOU CONTINUE PURSUING A DEGREE AFTER FAILING THREE TIMES, AND WHY?

Back to drawing board for 2026 revised SASSA SRD grant

Parliament sent back the revised SASSA SRD grant to the Department of Social Development this week. It's touted to become a Basic Income Grant for the unemployed in 2026. However, the working group wants to see urgent changes before it is approved. As such, a draft policy for the revised SASSA SRD grant was initiated with the committee for Social Protection, Community and Human Development back in November 2024. However, the committee sent it back to the DSD on Wednesday this week, citing 'affordability and economic opportunities for beneficiaries.' The none-permanent COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant has been extended every year since 2020. Image: File Before the new-look stipend is approved, it must survive various engagements. Like with the Office of the Presidency, National Treasury and Department of Employment and Labour. The South African Social Security Agency believes this will be concluded within a few months. From there a draft will be published for public comment. Policymakers from the DSD were told to 'better integrate pathways from income support to employment.' Currently, the grant pays out R370 each month to roughly 9-million beneficiaries living below the poverty line. However, the committee wants to see it become better 'aligned with broader economic objectives,' like jobs … South Africa's unemployment rate has only been increasing in the last decade, forcing many to exist in the informal sector. Image: File Essentially, the 2026 Basic Income Grant will be for those without jobs, but not to the point of creating long-term dependency on the grant. Therefore, the DSD and SASSA have to improve their data systems and align government programmes to make it work efficiently. Government is concerned that if and when they make the grant permanent, it must be budgeted for every year to remain viable (unlike the current R370 SRD which isn't permanent). While the department sets to work 'tightening' the revised SASSA SRD grant, it has requested that the National Treasury extend SRD for two more years. However, the Treasury has only approved the continuation of the current SRD grant until March 2026. There's simply not enough taxpayer money to ensure everyone who applies for a SASSA grant will be approved for one. Image: File In response to yet another delay to the revised SASSA SRD grant, many MPs were scathing of the DSD's work. The EFF's Noluvuyo Tafeni noted the policy has been in development for over two decades and was still not ready. Likewise, the DA's Alexandra Abrahams questioned whether the revised SASSA SRD grant policy would ever see the light of day. Finally, the MK's Nhlanhla Gcwabaza argued that SASSA should work to help people exit the grant system, not make them dependent on it … Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. 'Who the hell is that?': Rasta's Presley Chweneyagae portrait irks public

Rasta has done it again with another celebrity portrait that has left South Africans fuming. The Zimbabwean artist, Lebani Sirenje, unveiled his portrait of the late Presley Chweneyagae at his funeral on Saturday, 7 June. The service for he late actor took place at the Akasia Community Hall in Pretoria. On X, images of Rasta's painting of Presley Chweneyagae at the actor's funeral service had social media users up in arms. In the art picture, the painter shared his likeness of the Cobrizi star. In a second portrait, Rasta recreated the poster for Tsotsi, the 2004 feature film which gave Presley his breakout role. However, South Africans were not remotely convinced that the man in either of the portraits was the late screen star. X user @tlhonolo_ posted: 'Who the hell is that supposed to be?' Some were even angered by Rasta's attempt at creating Presley Chweneyagae's image. Another X user, @KkKakaza, added, 'Someone close to Rasta must tell him to hand himself over to the nearest police station. KZN SAPS is looking for him.' In 2023, the then Minister of Sport, Art, and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, sternly warned Rasta over his portrait of the late singer Zahara. In one viral pic posted on X, the minister was seen chatting to Rasta. Like the portrait of Presley Chweneyagae, Rasta's painting of Zahara went down in flames on social media. Images via X: @lesufipanyaza Gauteng Premier Penyaza Lesufi posted on X at the time: 'The Minister @zizikodwa is seriously engaging Rasta on the sidelines about his drawings of Zahara.'
