Goa Stampede: CM Sawant Orders Magisterial Inquiry After 6 People Killed At Temple Festival
The incident occurred around 3 am on Saturday at Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village, about 40 km from Panaji.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said a magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the stampede at a temple festival in North Goa, in which at least six persons were killed and more than 70 others injured.
The incident occurred around 3 am on Saturday at Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village, about 40 km from Panaji. The stampede broke out as thousands of devotees thronged the narrow lanes to the temple for the annual festival.
Sawant visited the state-run North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa, where some of the injured were admitted. Later, he also visited the site of the stampede.
In a message posted on X in the afternoon, the CM said, "A magisterial inquiry will be instituted to thoroughly investigate the incident at the Shirgaon Jatra. I will shortly be chairing a high-level meeting to review the entire situation and ensure appropriate action is taken." Talking to reporters at the site earlier in the day, Sawant said he has asked for a detailed inquiry into the incident.
"We will make the report public," he said.
He said precautions would be taken for all temple festivals in the state to prevent such incidents.

"We have eight people patrolling the area 24/7. We also urge residents to call 112 immediately to report crimes, including public consumption of liquor. Our response time is 5-8 minutes. For loud music after 10pm, people too can dial 112. " Sawant said he plans to hold such meeting once every month in the area for better connect with the people and also to understand the new messages or things criminals are trying to do to defraud people. Stating that most cyber crimes are hard to detect due to multi-country networks and the use of VPNs, he said the best method is prevention. Talking about other crimes, Sawant advised housing societies to ensure police verification of security guards, domestic workers, and others visiting the vicinity, CCTV cameras are in working condition, and jewellery and cash inside the house are kept securely. "We have also observed that most burglaries occur when one can physically see the lock. So I would advise people to use invisible locks even on the protective metal doors so that it is hard to know if someone is inside or not. "

15 Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi workers arrested for vandalising private hospital & threatening staff in Sangli
Kolhapur: A group of roughly 15 people associated with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi forcibly entered a private hospital in Sangli, and vandalised the property and assaulted staff members on Monday. The Sangli police have filed charges against the vandals and have arrested them. Aaditya Hospital, the medical facility that was targeted, is run by surgeon Sharad Sawant. The VBA workers claimed the hospital was charging fees from economically weak patients while simultaneously receiving govt compensation through the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. They also accused the hospital of providing substandard treatment to patients under the govt scheme. Sawant, however, rejected these accusations, claiming that certain local elements were attempting to force the hospital's closure. "We never charge a penny from the poor patients. There is a rule to initiate treatment or surgery only after approval from the govt machinery. There have been times when we did not wait for the approvals, given the condition of the patients. We challenge those accusing us to present the facts with documents, and we will also present the facts if they have any doubts. Vandalism, attacking the staff, and threatening us is not the way," said Sawant. Sawant alerted police when the vandalism commenced. Police intervened and detained the vandals. "We have arrested 15 people associated with a political party. We have invoked sections 3 and 4 of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2010," said inspector Sudhir Bhalerao, of the Vishrambaug police station.

Fisher gets Rs 22.4L payout after bus mishap
Panaji: A North Goa court awarded Rs 22.4 lakh compensation with interest to Bhikaji Sawant, a fisherman, who was rendered 40% permanently disabled after a bus ran over his leg in 2013. The court noted Sawant was 44 at the time and lost 16 years of earnings and better prospects in life due to the injury. The court held the bus driver failed in his duty to check for alighting passengers while reversing and did not exercise caution. The court awarded Rs 2 lakh for the pain and surgeries, considering his reliance on crutches and Rs 3 lakh for his permanent disability, noting his inability to work. The fisherman said that he earned Rs 15,000 per month, but the court set it at Rs 10,000 due to lack of proof. In July 2013, while alighting the bus at Amona, the driver reversed the bus, causing Sawant to hit the door and fall on the ground. The bus then ran over his leg, and he underwent seven leg surgeries.
