Goa Stampede: CM Sawant Orders Magisterial Inquiry After 6 People Killed At Temple Festival
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said a magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the stampede at a temple festival in North Goa, in which at least six persons were killed and more than 70 others injured.
The incident occurred around 3 am on Saturday at Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village, about 40 km from Panaji. The stampede broke out as thousands of devotees thronged the narrow lanes to the temple for the annual festival.
Sawant visited the state-run North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa, where some of the injured were admitted. Later, he also visited the site of the stampede.
In a message posted on X in the afternoon, the CM said, "A magisterial inquiry will be instituted to thoroughly investigate the incident at the Shirgaon Jatra. I will shortly be chairing a high-level meeting to review the entire situation and ensure appropriate action is taken." Talking to reporters at the site earlier in the day, Sawant said he has asked for a detailed inquiry into the incident.
"We will make the report public," he said.
He said precautions would be taken for all temple festivals in the state to prevent such incidents.

700 complete IRBn training, CM urges them to keep Goa safe
Panaji: A total of 700 constables of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn), Goa Police, on Tuesday passed out at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Assam. Chief minister Pramod Sawant, who attended the passing-out parade, urged the constables to work to keep Goa safe and secure. The total sanctioned strength of the IRBn is 3,021, and there is a shortage of 230 personnel at various levels. Sawant said that the police role is important to keep Goa safe, secure, and beautiful, and the constables will be committed to doing that. Sawant stated that 700 IRBn constables, 569 males and 131 females, will join Goa police. He mentioned that this is not the end of training but a proud moment for them. FIR against Uber management for ‘illegally operating' in Goa
The Goa Police booked cab aggregator Uber and a cab driver for allegedly illegally operating in the state without the necessary permits. Police said an FIR was registered against cab driver Devendra Satardekar and the 'management of Uber' on Friday on the complaint of Santosh Gawade, Assistant Director of Transport, Vasco. Police took cognisance of a video clip in which the accused cab driver could be purportedly seen operating with the cab aggregator outside Manohar International Airport in Mopa. Police said a probe found the incident took place on March 5. In a statement, Goa Police said the accused driver, 'in connivance with Uber management in Goa, was found operating and picking up passengers via the Uber mobile app without the necessary state transport permit or licence'. 'Such operations allegedly violate transport laws of Goa, pose safety and security risks to passengers and cause loss of revenue to the state exchequer,' the police statement said. The FIR has been registered under sections 223 and 318 (3) of the BNS. A spokesperson for Uber did not respond to requests for a comment. The incident was raised in the legislative Assembly on Friday by AAP legislator Venzy Viegas, who said the private app-based cab aggregator was illegally operating. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told the House that an inquiry would be conducted. 'No permissions have been granted. We will verify this complaint,' Sawant said. Earlier in June, Sawant announced that cab aggregators like Ola and Uber would not come to the state and that all stakeholders would be taken into confidence before taking a further call on the issue. This came after the Goa government published draft guidelines — the Goa Transport Aggregator Guidelines, 2025 — outlining a regulatory framework for app-based taxi and bike taxi operators, including licensing fees, tariffs and incentives, to regulate app-based transport aggregators in the month of May. In response, the taxi unions across the state threatened to stage protests, saying the move would pave the way for the entry of private app-based taxi aggregators and threaten their livelihood.
