Northeast to be gateway for trade with Southeast Asia: Modi
India's Northeast is not a 'frontier region' any more, it is the 'frontrunner of growth', Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, pitching for investments in the eight States that constitute the region. Inaugurating the Rising Northeast Summit in New Delhi, the Prime Minister said that the region offers a wide range of economic and industrial opportunities. India has 'new dreams' for the Northeast, he said, adding that the region would emerge as a gateway for trade with Southeast Asia over the next decade. The event comes against the backdrop of the May 17 order by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade to close land ports with Bangladesh. Officials have said that the decision will provide the Northeast a level playing field to develop the commercial potential of its own supply chains, and an impetus to manufacture competitively. The Prime Minister paid tribute to the diversity of the region, reflected in its products and people. 'India is termed as the most diverse nation in the world. But our Northeast is the most diverse part of our diverse nation. From trade to tradition, textile to tourism, Northeast's diversity is a very big strength of the region,' Mr. Modi said. He listed the bio-economy, bamboo, tea production, petroleum, sports and eco-tourism as some of the areas where the region is an emerging hub. 'Northeast is the powerhouse of energy,' said Mr. Modi, describing the region as 'Ashta Lakshmis' or the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi. He said the Northeast would emerge as a gateway to trade with the ASEAN bloc over the coming decade. 'Northeast will be a strong bridge of trade with Southeast Asia. We are working on the necessary infrastructure to realise that goal,' Mr. Modi said.
The Prime Minister announced that India is working on projects to directly connect Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos to India. 'These projects will give the Northeast a new commercial identity among the Indo-Pacific countries,' he added. 'East does not mean just direction for us. It means, Empower, Act, Strengthen and Transform. This is our government's policy for eastern India,' Mr. Modi said. Union Ministers have visited the region more than 700 times in the past decade, the Prime Minister said. 'They saw hope in the eyes of the people of the Northeast and they converted that trust into principles of development. We moved from Look East to Act East mantra and that is the result that we are seeing in the region,' he said. Chief Ministers of Northeast States in attendance include Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam, Meghalaya's Conrad Sangma, Tripura's Manik Saha, Lalduhoma of Mizoram, and Sikkim's Prem Singh Tamang. The Northeast's economic future received considerable attention in March when Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Mohammed Yunus described the region as 'landlocked' and offered his country as the 'guardian of the ocean' that could help China access the region's commercial space. India had strongly objected to that characterisation, with Mr. Sarma describing Prof. Yunus's comments as 'offensive and condemnable'. In an editorial, The Hindu noted that India should carefully lay out its response keeping in mind that while it has to communicate its displeasure to the Yunus government, it also has to maintain working relations with this administration till a popularly elected government takes charge in Dhaka.

Working on setting up major industries in Mandya: HDK
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy on Saturday reaffirmed his commitment to bringing in major industries to the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency and said he will personally seek cooperation from the State government for the region's development. Speaking at the platinum jubilee celebrations of MySugar High School in Mandya, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the aspirations of Mandya's people must be realised through unity and sustained efforts. 'I was elected with the blessings of voters who transcended caste and party lines. I am committed to striving for a meaningful development of the constituency,' he said. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had entrusted him with a key ministerial responsibility, and that he is actively working towards establishing a major industry in Mandya. The cooperation of the State government is vital to make this vision a reality. Mr. Kumaraswamy highlighted recent developments, including the sanctioning of ₹4 crore for the construction of Raitha Bhavan and ₹2.5 crore for Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. 'It is unfortunate that political infighting has surfaced over the spending of Raitha Bhavan funds.' On the future of MySugar High School, Mr. Kumaraswamy said it currently has around 30 students. The management had been told to get approval to start Pre-University courses to improve enrolment and prepare a detailed blueprint to transform this school into a model institution. 'I will ensure full support. The school's rich legacy must be preserved and nurtured,' he added. The Minister spoke about ongoing efforts to revive the Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant in Bhadravati, with a proposed investment of ₹15,000 to ₹18,000 crore and criticised the State government for allegedly creating hurdles in the revival of public sector industries like HMT. 'We are determined to protect the legacy of the Mysore Maharajas and M. Visvesvaraya,' Mr. Kumaraswamy said. Nirmalanandanatha Swami of Adichunchanagiri Math, Purushothamananda Swami, writer Krishne Gowda, former MLA K.T. Srikante Gowda, MySugar chairman Gangadhar and others were present.

Uttarakhand: Chamoli farmers reap benefits of PM-KISAN scheme, thank central govt
Chamoli (Uttarakhand): Farmers in Uttarakhand's district of Chamoli are witnessing tangible economic improvements, thanks to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, a flagship initiative of the Central Government that provides direct financial support to small and marginal farmers. Under this ambitious scheme, eligible farmers receive Rs 6,000 annually in three equal installments of Rs 2,000, directly credited to their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). To date, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released 19 installments under the scheme, and Chamoli has not remained untouched by its impact. According to official data, 48,664 farmers in the district are actively benefiting from PM-KISAN. The scheme has not only eased the financial burden of farmers but has also contributed significantly to agricultural productivity and self-reliance. IANS visited Chamoli and spoke with several beneficiaries to understand how this initiative has impacted their lives. Hori Lal, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude for the assistance: 'I am getting money under this scheme. I want to thank the central government. It has really helped us.' Harish Lal, another farmer, said, 'This money helps us buy seeds and pesticides. I want to thank PM Modi for bringing such a scheme to life.' Pradeep Kumar echoed similar sentiments, saying, 'I am receiving the money in regular instalments. It's a big help for farmers like us. Thank you to the Prime Minister.' PM-KISAN, launched in 2019, is designed to supplement farmers' incomes. It aims to ensure dignified livelihoods, reduce dependence on informal credit, and boost agricultural efficiency. The transparency and reliability of DBT ensure that the funds reach the intended beneficiaries on time, without middlemen or delays. The latest, 19th instalment was released in February 2025 and benefited more than 9.8 crore farmers across the country, including 2.4 crore women. Earlier, instalments were disbursed in October 2024 and June 2024. With the 20th instalment expected in June 2025, anticipation is building among farmers as the scheme continues to support their efforts on the ground. Though the official release date and location are yet to be announced, it is expected that Prime Minister Modi will again preside over the disbursement ceremony.
