Ronald Acuna Jr. returns to Braves in massive lift nearly one year after crushing ACL tear
The Braves are receiving an MVP-sized jolt in hopes of finally performing up to expectations.
Atlanta is activating former NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. for Friday night's home game against the Padres, welcoming him back after he missed most of the 2024 season with an ACL tear.
His return comes two days before the one-year anniversary of him tearing his ACL against the Pirates last year.
'Tonight: RONALD RETURNS!' the Braves tweeted Friday morning above a highlight clip.
The Braves (24-25) have been one of baseball's most disappointing teams through roughly the first-third of the season, looking little like the contender they were expected to be.

Inserting Acuna back into the lineup should provide a massive lift considering he's one of the game's best players when healthy.
Acuna, 27, earned MVP honors in 2023 by becoming the first player in MLB history to hit at least 40 homers and notch at least 70 steals in the season.

He tallied 41 home runs and 73 steals while slashing .337/.416/.596 with a career-high 1.012 OPS.
The 2024 campaign started slow for Acuna, with just a .716 OPS, before he tore his ACL last year while on the bases against the Pirates.
He stopped while attempting to bluff a steal of third before crumpling to the ground with the injury.
Acuna previously tore his right ACL during the 2021 season.

The outfielder underwent surgery on June 6, and the Braves reached the playoffs without him, though they could not win the NL East for the seventh straight season.
The Padres then quickly dumped them in the playoffs with a two-game sweep.
The Braves' offense has been unspectacular this year without Acuna, ranking 17th in runs scored, 14th in slugging percentage and 13th in OPS.
Acuna hit .400 spanning six games and 15 at-bats in the minors before the team cleared him to return, adding two homers in that stretch.
Atlanta sits in third place in the NL East, 7 1/2 games behind the division-leading Phillies and five games behind the Mets.

Jordan Spieth Names Best American Athlete Without Hesitation
Jordan Spieth Names Best American Athlete Without Hesitation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth is gearing up for one of golf's toughest tests: the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, set to tee off on Thursday. Advertisement As the PGA Tour season heats up, Spieth finds himself in familiar territory, competing among golf's elite, while also weighing in on a question that has ignited debate across sports: Who is the best American athlete right now? In a video posted by the PGA Tour on X on Wednesday, Spieth was among several Tour pros asked to name the best American athlete currently competing. Without a moment's hesitation, Spieth pointed to NBA superstar Stephen Curry, stating, "I mean, I love Steph Curry. Is he the greatest athlete in the world right now? He's probably one of them." With both being flagship Under Armour athletes, Spieth and Curry have a long history together. Advertisement Spieth extended his Under Armour apparel and footwear deal in 2022 to run through 2029, serving as one of the brand's premier golf ambassadors. Curry, meanwhile, has been with Under Armour since 2013, launching his own Curry Brand sub-label in 2020 and starring in joint promotional and charitable events alongside Spieth as cross-sport ambassadors for the company. So, Spieth's endorsement of Curry comes as no surprise. Golden State Warriors star Steph Edmondson-Imagn Images Even still, his pick isn't entirely inaccurate. Curry's haul of four NBA championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022), two MVP awards (including the only unanimous vote in 2016) and status as the NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers (4,058) already make him one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Advertisement Combine this with a 2024 Olympic gold medal and his transformative impact on basketball, ushering in the era of the 3-point revolution, and Curry's resume argues compellingly for his standing as America's top athlete right now. Falcons defense ready to make a statement
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Falcons defense has been overshadowed this offseason by stories centered around quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr. However, if the Falcons have any hope of making the playoffs for first time in eight years, they will need better production from their defense. Specifically, the defensive line. Last year, Atlanta produced 31 sacks, which was second fewest in the league. Only New England's 28 ranked worse. The front office did make some moves after the year. They released defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, which was surprising since he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year for the Falcons. Atlanta put a heavy emphasis on the defensive side of the ball during the draft. Four of their five draft picks were defensive players, which includes their two first round picks linebacker Jalon Walker from Georgia and defensive end James Pearce from Tennessee. Atlanta also needs to improve its defensive third-down conversation rate. They gave up over 45% last year, which was second worst in the league. The Falcons continue the final day of mandatory minicamp tomorrow, but the final practice is not open to the media. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
