Gary Lineker claims BBC exit ‘case of quit or be quitted' after sharing pro-Gaza video
Gary Lineker has claimed his departure from the BBC was a case of 'quit or be quitted'. The former Match Of The Day presenter was asked if his departure from the corporation was 'of his own volition, or a case of quit or be quitted?' to which he replied 'the latter', during an interview with The New World, formerly known as The New European.
The 64-year-old left the BBC early following a post about Zionism which featured a depiction of a rat, historically an antisemitic insult, which he apologised for, saying he stands 'against all forms of racism'.
The presenter will no longer front BBC coverage of the 2026 World Cup or the FA Cup next season as had been intended, with his last episode of Match Of The Day coming on May 25.
Speaking about his departure, Lineker said: 'That's what changed after that. I made a mistake and I immediately took it down and apologised, which I thought should have been enough.'
He went on to say that he believed he had complied with the BBC's impartiality rules as he had looked at the war in Gaza 'without a vested interest'.
Lineker added: 'I've got no skin in the game. I'm not Muslim, I'm not Palestinian, I'm not Israeli, I'm not Jewish. I come from a place of complete impartiality. And then it becomes about truth.
'People talked about me being antisemitic. I'm not anti-any group of people. Any race, any colour. But I am anti the killing of children.'
The former England striker went on to say he did not blame director-general Tim Davie for his exit, adding: 'Tim Davie I know and I get on well with. I know how difficult it is for him with what's going on.
'Do I dislike people at the BBC? Not the people that I know.'
BBC boss speaks out
At the time of Lineker's departure, Davie said in a statement that the pair 'agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season', after the former presenter 'acknowledged the mistake he made'.
Davie added: 'Gary has been a defining voice in football coverage for the BBC for over two decades. His passion and knowledge have shaped our sports journalism and earned him the respect of sports fans across the UK and beyond. We want to thank him for the contribution he has made.'
In his own statement, Lineker said that 'stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action'.
The ex-Barcelona player went on to say in The New World interview that he has toned down his use of social media following the incident.
He explained: 'Social media's changed a lot. People say to me 'when did you start having a view on things?', and I say 'well I've always had a view but social media gave me the platform'.
'Perhaps I wish it hadn't. I've come off X completely. I only use it to promote a podcast now. It's just become horrible. Nasty.'
Lineker also runs Goalhanger Podcasts which produces podcasts such as The Rest Is Football, The Rest Is History, The Rest Is Politics, and The Rest Is Entertainment, and the Leicester-born star revealed in the interview that his company would soon produce a science podcast.
The Rest Is Football podcast, which Lineker presents alongside former footballers Micah Richards and Alan Shearer, moved from the BBC to British internet sports streaming platform DAZN following Lineker's BBC exit.

Controversial BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty could face investigation after string of complaints relating to her 'hard' and 'bullying' tone following claims she fostered 'toxic' work atmosphere
Presenter Naga Munchetty could face an investigation from BBC bosses after she was accused of bullying a junior colleague. The BBC Breakfast host, 50, has been placed 'under review' while bosses consider escalating complaints to a formal investigation, The Sun reports. A source said higher-ups had heard from several colleagues and logged concerns over her 'hard' and 'bullying' behaviour on the breakfast show, as well as her Radio 5 Live show. 'Following the amount of people who have come forward to share their experiences with Naga, the BBC has officially moved to place the complaints under review. 'The review is to ascertain whether a full-on investigation is required and that could come in weeks', the source told The Sun. Daily Mail has approached BBC and Munchetty's representatives for comment. It comes after Munchetty was spoken to by execs after a junior staffer accused the journalist of bullying them. She was also reportedly hauled into a meeting after she made a sex jibe during an ad break while hosting her radio show. She is believed to have used a crude slang term for a sec act and reportedly asled a colleague if they had ever done it. It was also reported last month that Munchetty was planning on quitting BBC Breakfast after she was accused of bullying. Her own conduct was thrown into doubt when BBC Breakfast's editor Richard Frediani reportedly took an extended period of leave, after an internal review of bullying and misconduct allegations was opened into the show. Amid the fallout, Munchetty's agents have reportedly 'held talks with rival station LBC' to explore opportunities for the highly-respected journalist. A source told The Sun: 'The fallout of Richard Frediani's investigation created a stark 'him or her' narrative on Breakfast with Naga flung to the front line. 'The fact is she loves the BBC and her job but there's only so much external noise anyone is prepared to take. LBC would suit her well as the focus remains on news-led broadcasting, they take a hard line and there's far less of the fluffy nonsense involved in working at the BBC. 'Her team last week renewed historic talks with the Global radio station to see if there could be any work for her there.' New figures released by the BBC last month revealed the presenter was awarded a £10,000 increase in her annual salary. Having researched forensics for her novels, Lynda explained animatedly: 'If you have blood spattering, you could get an expert that deals only with that, and they could walk in and see pooling, splattering-' But she was interrupted by Munchetty, who quickly warned her: 'Careful! It's breakfast.' Frantically segueing into another line of enquiry, Munchetty asks awkwardly: 'Do you ever - I avoid, often, crime and murder novels because I get squeamish.' 'But this isn't too much for me. I can only speak for myself. Do you ever think there's a limit? You wouldn't go too far in terms of description and squeamishness?' 'A limit of the horror?' clarified Lynda, before answering: 'I think there is my own limit. 'We can give a name to virtually every reason for a crime, you can say they had a horrible background, an abused child, or psychological problems, but there is no-one that can ever say "This is what made evil". We haven't got it. Charlie then asked Lynda: 'We're almost out of time. Do you think you would have made a good detective yourself?' But Lynda insisted she would be 'dreadful', adding: 'I talk too much and I think I'd get awfully upset.' Fans of the show weren't impressed, and rushed to social media to express their disapproval. One wrote: 'Never, ever let Charlie ad-lib. F***ing disaster every single time.'

Alex Jones confirms return of her The One Show co-host after lengthy break
The One Show host Alex Jones confirmed the return of her co-host after a lengthy absence from the BBC programme. Alex Jones has disclosed that one of her previous co-presenters is making a comeback to The One Show next week. At the end of Friday's (August 1) programme, the Welsh host, who recently provided an update to her followers, i nformed BBC audiences that Ronan Keating was returning to the iconic green sofa following an extended absence. As the episode ended she announced to viewers: "That's all we've got time for tonight! a big thank you to our guests. "Now, Ronan Keating is back with me on Monday, with guest's Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Ade Edmondson and Helen George." The revelation follows the Boyzone singer's disclosure back in 2023 that he would be presenting fewer programmes owing to his musical obligations, reports Wales Online. In a statement released at the time, Ronan explained: "I'll be doing less shows this year due to my performing and recording schedule but I'm still very much part of the family." Meanwhile in the episode, presenters Alex and Clara Amfo admitted they felt anxious about one specific guest they would be interviewing. As Friday's programme began, BBC viewers witnessed Clara and Alex reveal who would be appearing later in the show. Initially they mentioned Vicky McClure would be performing live later in the programme with Jon McClure's band Reverend and the Makers. Nevertheless, it was actor Sam Claflin who left the pair feeling nervous about welcoming him onto the programme. Clara said: "We're equally excited by somebody else who knows a thing or two about rock'n'roll, actor Sam Claflin blew us away in Daisy Jones and The Six. "Honestly, myself and Al were obsessed with this show, we're a bit worried that he's going to be scared of us later, but we carry on!" Despite this, it appeared Sam was entirely comfortable whilst chatting to the duo, as they discussed his part in the Amazon Prime programme. Playing Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones and The Six, Clara didn't hesitate to enquire whether viewers might anticipate another series. The star responded: "I can't speak for everyone, I can speak for myself. I think we'd love to. It's just not in my hands! It's not my decision unfortunately. "I think getting six actors together with our schedules-obviously, if we were a band, our schedules would be aligned.
