Panchamasali Trust mulls alternative to seer in Kudalasangama

Hubballi: Vijayanand Kashappanavar, president of Akhil Bharata Lingayat Panchamasali Trust, said they are considering appointing an alternative pontiff for the Lingayat Panchamasali Peetha Kudalasangama.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Kashappanavar said the trustees have not asked Basavajaya Mruthyunjaya Swami to relinquish the post of pontiff. "However, as swamiji himself expressed his intention to establish his own mutt on the banks of River Malaprabha, we are planning to appoint another seer soon. Community members are disappointed by his behaviour," he added.
His statement follows an open rift with Swami in recent months.
He mentioned that a "great leader" purchased land for the peetha between Hubballi and Belagavi. "Swamiji can establish his mutt on the banks of River Malaprabha or between Hubballi and Belagavi. We have no objections. We will appoint an alternative seer to spread Basava philosophies. A decision will be made in a trustees' meeting to be held soon," he stated.
He recalled that Swami was appointed in 2008 for the development of Panchamasali community and to spread the philosophies of Basava and other sharanas.
However, he forgot those aspects and became involved in recommending transfers of govt officials and employees. "He pursued publicity. According to the trust bylaws, swamijis are not allowed to own properties. Yet, he owns two houses in Belagavi, and one each in Hubballi and Bengaluru.
The trust issued a notice to him in 2019, and he apologised for it. He rarely stays in the peetha. Whenever he was there, some illicit activities occurred with some miscreants.
Suspicious of his activities, we installed CCTV cameras there," he claimed.
When asked about the incident of locking the peetha in Kudalasangama, Kashappanavar said it was to protect the peetha. "Swamiji broke the lock through someone and felicitated them for doing so. Swamiji is sitting under a party banner and speaking in favour of only one person," he alleged.
Another Panchamasali leader, Neelakanth Asuti, alleged that Swami had not visited Kudalasangama for long.

Punjab and Haryana HC disposes of PIL seeking commission for defence personnel, expresses hope for Centre's consideration

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the constitution of a national commission for serving and retired defence personnel and their dependents. The court expressed hope that the Central Government would consider the grievance and pass appropriate orders, if necessary. The petition filed by Tamanna Swami, a 20-year-old law student at the Army Institute of Law, Mohali, had sought a writ of mandamus directing the Ministries of Defence and Home Affairs to establish a National Commission for Defence Personnel, with statutory powers similar to other commissions such as National Commission for Women and National Commissions for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes, to address grievances, recommend reforms, and provide redress to affected families. The Union of India was represented by Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain. The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry recorded that the grievance was that defence personnel lacked an equivalent redressal mechanism despite facing unique service-related hardships and systemic vulnerabilities. The Bench observed that there was 'no enabling statutory provision' under the current legal framework of the Central or State Governments to constitute such a commission. However, taking note of the representations already submitted by the petitioner to the authorities in 2022, the court said, 'Without commenting on the merits of the petition, we dispose of the present petition with the hope and expectation that the grievance raised by the petitioner shall be looked into by the Central Government and that appropriate orders, if necessary, shall be passed in this regard.' Swami, daughter of serving Army officer Colonel Anil Dev Swami (VSM), had filed the PIL invoking Articles 226 and 227 of the Constitution. Her petition stated that India's 41 lakh-strong defence community, including 15 lakh serving and 26 lakh retired personnel, faced a host of administrative, legal, financial, and social issues without a dedicated forum to address them. Among the key incidents cited in her plea was the alleged harassment faced by her mother, Uma Berwal Swami, a senior manager with the Central Bank of India. According to the petition, Uma invested ₹60 lakh in a Chandigarh real estate project, but the builder repeatedly delayed handover of the allotted plot. When she pursued the matter, she was allegedly coerced into signing revised terms under pressure and was humiliated in front of the builder's staff and security personnel. The family's inability to pursue the matter effectively was attributed to her husband's posting in Leh and the absence of a statutory body to safeguard the rights of defence families. Swami also cited the custodial violence case involving Colonel Pushpinder Singh Baath in Patiala in March 2025 as a recent example of the institutional vulnerability of serving personnel and the lack of systemic safeguards. The petition was listed multiple times over the last four months. On April 4, 2025, the petitioner sought an adjournment. On April 9, she again requested more time to prepare, which was granted. On April 30, the court directed her to file an affidavit with supporting material. On May 28, her counsel informed the bench that she was facing personal difficulty, leading to another deferment. The case was finally disposed of on July 29.

Can govt appoint trustee of Banke Bihari temple, HC asks UP govt

According to the amicus curiae, 'The temple is a private temple and the religious practice is being carried out by the heirs of the late Swami Hari Dasji. By the issuance of the ordinance, the government is trying to take control over the temple through the back door.' The amicus curiae apprised the court that according to the ordinance, there would be two kinds of trustees of the board — nominated trustees and ex-officio trustees. The nominated trustees will be the seers, gurus, scholars, mathadhish and mahants etc. from the Vaishnav tradition as well as followers of the Sanatan Dharma. Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal, after hearing amicus curiae Sanjeev Goswami, fixed July 30 as the next date of hearing on a petition filed by Pranav Goswami and another. Prayagraj (UP), Jul 23 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has sought a reply from the Uttar Pradesh government on whether it can appoint its officials as trustees of the Banke Bihari temple in Mathura, a private temple, by the issuance of the Uttar Pradesh Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple Trust Ordinance, 2025. However, he raised strong objections as to the seven ex-officio trustees, who are officials like the district magistrate, the special superintendent of police and the municipal commissioner of Mathura, which he said would amount to a back-door entry by the state government in the private temple. 'The creation of such a trust amounts to intruding into the Hindu religion by the state government. The Constitution does not provide for the State to practise any religion and take control of any temple,' the amicus curiae said. The court, in its order dated July 21, sought the state government's reply and observed, 'The matter requires consideration. Hearing to continue. Put up this case as fresh on July 30, 2025. By that time, the state government would respond to the argument which has been raised by the amicus curiae. PTI COR RAJ RC This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
