JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin drivers can look forward to an upgraded route down Main Street.
The City of Joplin is in the design phase to overhaul seven blocks of Main Street.That includes a new street surface, sidewalks and lighting.

City workers point out this project will connect previous streetscaping – completing Main Street improvements from First through 32nd Streets.
'We're going to fix a lot of drainage issues, the lighting will be improved. And this will make the whole street – this is the last piece to make the whole street nicer,' said Dan Johnson, Joplin Public Works Dir.
The overall project is expected to cost about $6 million – with half of the funding coming from federal grants.

Erie County United hosts town hall meeting to discuss housing issues
An event was held on Saturday to give residents the power to speak up and not feel alone while doing it. Erie County United held a housing town hall at the Booker T. Washington Center Saturday afternoon along with several elected officials. Erie Insurance rings the Nasdaq Opening Bell, celebrating 100 years in business Renters, landlords and homeowners were working in collaboration to speak about issues that are affecting housing in the county. The canvas lead, Tori Kenny, said the most common issue that was brought up is that there is a lack of safe and affordable housing. Autism Society of NWPA hosts 24th annual Walk for Autism 'Blighted properties is a huge issue that we are seeing, as well as code enforcement for the last few years has been lacking. They are picking up lately, it has been working a lot more efficiently than it has been, so that is really good,' said Kenny. Kenny said they plan to have meetings like this throughout the summer. Fundraiser for SafeNet pits tutu wearing racers against each other for good cause
A race for everyone took place at Presque Isle on Sunday in an effort to benefit a local organization and a good cause. Participants had the option to walk, run or stroll the Tutu Race. The event was accessible to everyone as it's split between the option of a 2.2-mile or a 4.4-mile route. Awards were given at the end for the top three placements in each group as well as for the best tutu. Autism Society of NWPA hosts 24th annual Walk for Autism Each year, a different organization is chosen to be represented, and this year's choice was SafeNet of Erie. 'We're just so honored to be a part of this amazing event. It does raise awareness for domestic violence,' said Meghan Baker, outreach coordinator for SafeNet of Erie. 'We offer our services 10% free, confidential and we support our community.' 'I think there's two pieces to it. So, we're encouraging more people to come out, it's fun, it's not a real competitive race, I think it's more about coming out, having fu,n but a lot of people come out to support our charity, which is SafeNet,' said Janina Lee, co-director of the Tutu Race.
