
Dunedin Welcomes New Wine Bar Piccolo From The Team Behind The Esplanade
Two great new openings bring a taste of Italy to St Clair.
St Clair, already home to one of Dunedin's best-regarded restaurants, has just welcomed two new neighbours. Sorella Gelato and Piccolo have opened side-by-side on Forbury Rd, offering a casual yet considered approach to Italian food and drink.
Piccolo is a wine and salumi bar with a concise, interesting list of local and Italian bottles, a sharp edit of cocktails, and snack-friendly dishes like pizzette, croquettes and zucchini flowers. Wine is available by the glass or bottle, and takeaway options (including pizza!) — like vermouth — are sold from the fridge near the door.
Next door, Sorella is a traditional gelateria led by Marco Adinolfi — ranked among the world's top 100 gelato makers — who prepares a fresh line-up of flavours each day in the onsite lab. The menu spans both gelato and sorbetto, with a focus on seasonal, all-natural ingredients and a generous non-dairy selection. Take-home tubs and gelato cakes are also available.
The two new venues are the latest from Katrina Toovey, who also runs neighbouring Italian restaurant The Esplanade, which is a favourite with both locals and visitors, and No 7 Balmac in Maori Hill.
'In Italian cuisine there is a real emphasis on quality and tradition, the art of doing things well. There is also a culture of meandering and strolling through a neighbourhood and really enjoying an environment. These are all things that I know are important to our area, and for us it's about building on this.
'For some locals that might look like dropping into Piccolo for a glass before dinner at The Esplanade, or maybe it's getting a gelato with your kids on an afternoon stroll, and getting yourself a nice bottle to take home afterwards. We're curating quality options to cater to everyone,' says Katrina.
The new wine bar and gelateria have been designed by Cheshire Architects, who are also responsible for The Esplanade's excellent interiors. Piccolo is a refreshing break from pared-back hospitality fitouts, with a fun use of colour and lots of art lining the walls. Choose from a cosy leather banquet by the window or sit at a colourful high table on a funky mushroom-like leather stool.
'To me, St Clair feels spacious, bright and open — we wanted to reflect that in what we've built here,' says Katrina. 'It's about offering a few different ways to enjoy the area, whether that's a scoop of gelato after a walk or a glass of wine before dinner.'

Unknown Mortal Orchestra announces a new EP CURSE, which is set for release on Wednesday, June 18th via Jagjaguwar. The announcement comes alongside the release of a new single and music video 'BOYS WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WOLVES.' The single encompasses so much of what has made Unknown Mortal Orchestra a source of intrigue since the project's enigmatic debut in 2011 - from spectral, experimental jamming to its metal-indebted earworm of a chorus. The song arrives with a Ruban Nielson -directed music video. CURSE reflects these cursed times we find ourselves in. Taking inspiration from Italian horror films of the 1970s and 1980s, the six songs on the release are as cathartic a listen as the band has ever recorded. Featuring both abrasive riffs reminiscent of Black Sabbath on 'BOYS WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WOLVES' as well as the laid back, intricate guitar playing UMO is maybe most famous for on 'DEATH COMES FROM THE SKY', the CURSE EP is the perfect soundtrack to your next confrontation with the void. In defining what CURSE contends with thematically, Nielson shares: "In the hearts of men there are sometimes goodnesses hidden but substantial, which would be the difference in times of woe between finding oneself at the mercy of a monster or a more heroic creature. For the sake of sanity we can fool ourselves into believing these silver slivers of morality are visible from the outside, even when we know they aren't. And anyway, so much of what we believe we can see from the outside is a mirage, especially these days. In the clownish, happy-go-lucky soil of lies and chaos, a silly kind of music can grow; a senseless laughter, and we can amuse ourselves with it, however darkly. We can dance with lost minds and howl in valiant hysteria as the stormtroopers of death, confused and incredulous, pile us or those we love into their meat wagons." The EP closely follows Unknown Mortal Orchestra's IC-02 Bogotá, which was just released this past March.

Italian-style nuptials a hit
Mallory and Chris Cooper-Tait were married at the bride's family home in Whiterigg, Gore, on February 15, 2025. The couple chose an Italian theme for their wedding, which included a main meal of authentic Italian pizza from the Italian Way food truck and plenty of dancing. Mrs Cooper-Tait said her family home was the ideal venue for their Italian-themed wedding. "We wanted a really fun and relaxed wedding, with lots of laughing and dancing — so nothing was too serious," she said. Mrs Cooper-Tait, pictured with husband Chris, wore a vintage wedding dress from Love James, a second hand/vintage wedding dress store in Auckland, which she accompanied with a vintage veil. "It's a pretty special spot and it honestly couldn't have worked better. "My parents did the most incredible job making it feel like we were in Italy. "We DIY'd a lot and our family and friends from around Gore really rallied around us in the week prior to set everything up — we have never felt so loved. "We spent many evenings and weekends at their house leading up to the wedding. "We built the bars from old doors, made signs out of old timber and glass doors, got recycled benches from an old boarding house and just used what we could find or make." The couple said there were many special moments. Mr Cooper-Tait said the dance floor was a "massive hit" with guests. Waikato equine-therapy business healing humans with horses
She was surprised to learn it was therapy for people rather than horses. At the time, although working with horses was a much-loved activity, she was employed as a university lecturer. A change of career Previously, Sue's passion for music led to her studying classical guitar in London, Otago and Rome, ultimately gaining a PhD in the history of Italian music. She then worked as a professor, followed by university management, which took her to an Australian university. As her Australian employment was nearing the end, Sue retrained as an equine-assisted therapist and a counsellor. The couple came back to New Zealand, where Sarah also trained as a counsellor. They have since built up an equine-assisted therapy business together. Fascinated by animals Sue has always had animals in her life and has bred cattle and goats in modest numbers on small farms she has owned. 'Animals were always an important part of my childhood,' she said. 'They know who they are and how to be their best selves, whereas humans find such self-knowledge much more elusive.' Because mammals don't have the large prefrontal cortex that humans enjoy, they tend to base their decisions more on physical needs and survival. Humans do too, but while we apply our massive brain to useful and complex calculations, we also complicate our mental lives by overthinking about the past and the future. 'Horses model for us healthier living in the present moment and how to view the world more broadly,' Sue said. 'For instance, as prey animals with near-360-degree vision from eyes positioned on the sides of their heads, they teach us not to be so single-minded in our focus. 'This is something people can learn both physically and as useful life lessons, showing us how narrow focused we have become.' Horses teach compassion and can be seen showing kindness and looking after one another in the herd, as one horse at a time becomes a sentinel while the others rest. For this reason, horses do not enjoy being paddocked alone because they can't relax. They also need companionship to participate in allogrooming, where they groom each other in the hard-to-reach areas. In their own herd of seven horses, Sue and Sarah see healthy social behaviours modelled, where they respect and nurture one another while being led by a head mare who avoids micromanaging. 'If two horses have a disagreement, she looks at them as if to say, 'hey guys, sort it out, or I will'. 'So, they have a lot to teach us about social living through observing their social interactions.' Equine-assisted therapy Sue said that while observation of horse behaviour was a key aspect of the therapy work, another useful tool was metaphor, which naturally arose when a client worked one-on-one with a horse. It allows projection and personal narrative to arise and leads to discussion of the dynamics within the client's life. How a horse behaves is likely to be taken personally in some way; for instance, a horse looking in another direction or refusing to walk beside a client might be interpreted as not wanting to be with them. Observing both the horse and the client's reactions leads to discussion of personal narratives, opening opportunities for reflection and change. Heightened senses 'A horse lives in the moment, doesn't spend time worrying, carries no mental baggage, and if one upsets the other, they don't hold on to resentment but quickly go back to grazing,' Sue said. 'This is one way that horses beautifully model to humans how to let go of anger without holding on to resentment.' Horses are attuned to our body language and magically seem to know what we are experiencing, but in truth, this is not a magical process. With their heightened sense of smell (similar to a dog's), superior vision and hearing, plus sensitivity to touch, they accurately 'read' other beings. They smell adrenaline and other biochemicals within humans, they read our body language accurately and know our emotional states better, sometimes, than we know ourselves. 'We are very blessed with these beautiful animals since they are so kind and generous around humans and very willing to lead us to healthier lives.' Sue published a book on equine-assisted practices last year and is now writing a second book.
