Ramasamy awarded RM150,000 in damages over bribery allegation
GEORGE TOWN : Former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy has been awarded RM150,000 in defamation damages over a video clip in which two men accused him of ignoring a housing scandal.
Judge Norsalha Hamzah ruled that Ramasamy had successfully proven his case against K Elemperu Valuthi and activist Sophian Zain on a balance of probabilities.
Norsalha allowed Ramasamy's claims for RM150,000 in damages, and ordered both defendants to make a written apology. They were also barred from repeating their allegations.
The case stemmed from a video clip in which the two men linked Ramasamy to an alleged bribery scandal involving state housing applications. They claimed Ramasamy took no action despite being informed of wrongdoing.
In the video, Elemperu said 'I already showed Ramasamy and brought the victim to meet him, but still no action was taken' while Sophian added 'an investigation must be carried out on P Ramasamy.'
Ramasamy argued that these remarks implied he had wilfully ignored complaints or was complicit in corrupt acts, thereby defaming his integrity and conduct in public office.
Defence lawyer N Ahilan said his clients' intentions were to raise public awareness about bribery in housing programmes, and not to accuse anyone directly of corruption. Elemperu had earlier told the court that he was merely raising awareness so that no potential house buyers would pay bribes.
However, the judge ruled that the defendants' words clearly referred to Ramasamy, and their open speech in public meant the statements were bound to spread.
After the hearing, Ramasamy said he felt vindicated.

The lawyers also expressed hope that the return of the investigation papers would be followed by the steps requested in a letter they sent to Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar. "This action aligns with one of the four requests we made in the 5 August 2025 letter to the Attorney General," they added. They further urged that the other three requests be included in the instructions — namely, that the case be handled by an experienced investigator from Bukit Aman, that Zara's grave be exhumed for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death, and that an inquest be held to assess whether there was criminal involvement. Zara Qairina, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up.

AKPS nabs Indian national trying to smuggle 2,500 turtles through KLIA
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) intercepted a wildlife smuggling operation at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, seizing over 2,500 live turtles valued at RM348,000 from an Indian passenger attempting to board a flight to Bengaluru last night. The suspect, who was scheduled to board a flight to Bengaluru, India, was detained at 10.05pm at the departure gate during a routine security operation. Acting on intelligence information, enforcement officers from AKPS KLIA and Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel conducted a scan of the suspect's luggage which revealed suspicious images. Further inspection uncovered thousands of Red-eared Slider turtles hidden inside the baggage, with all the wildlife subsequently seized for further investigation. JPJ seizes four luxury cars including Mercedes S400 a China national drove with no insurance for a year
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) seized four luxury vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota Vellfire, without valid insurance and road tax during an operation in Shah Alam last night. The seizures took place during a five-hour enforcement effort called 'Ops Pengarah' that began at 8.30pm at the Kota Kemuning Toll Plaza along the Kesas Expressway, the New Straits Times reported. JPJ officers first stopped a Mercedes-Benz S400 driven by a 41-year-old woman from China. Checks revealed that the car had been without valid road tax or insurance for over a year. The woman, who is married to a Malaysian, was also driving without a valid licence. In another case, a 25-year-old Malaysian man was found driving a Toyota Vellfire MPV with expired road tax. He claimed that his brother had purchased the vehicle three months ago by taking over the hire-purchase instalments from the previous owner. The man added that he had asked the original owner to renew the road tax, but was told this could not be done due to unresolved summonses. Both drivers had to book e-hailing rides home after JPJ officers impounded their vehicles on the spot. Selangor RTD director Azrin Borhan said 16,735 cases of unlicensed driving and 25,338 road tax-related offences were recorded from January to July this year. Yesterday, a transport safety group alleged that luxury vehicle owners often opt to forego obtaining insurance and road tax as it was cheaper to pay the RM300 fine each time they were caught.
