Division-leading Phillies like view with Orioles visiting

Reuters19 hours ago
August 4 - The Philadelphia Phillies are back in first place in the National League East and the ultimate task is staying there.
The Phillies hold a half-game lead over the New York Mets as they enter a three-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.
Philadelphia took two of three from the American League Central-leading Detroit Tigers over the weekend, including a 2-0 win on Sunday night.
Kyle Schwarber clubbed his 38th homer of the season to match Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL lead.
Schwarber likes what he sees from a team eyeing a fourth straight playoff berth.
"The biggest thing is we have a group where we know we can go really far in the playoffs and be where we want to be," Schwarber said afterward. "It's a day-by-day challenge. Obviously, we have our goals before that. We want to win our division."
New closer Jhoan Duran notched his second straight save Sunday since being acquired from the Minnesota Twins before the trade deadline.
"I think the overall message was we got a guy in the back end of the bullpen to where we know that if you hand him the ball, it's going to be tough to beat the guy," Schwarber said of Duran.
The Orioles have lost three of their last four games, including a painful 5-3 loss to the Cubs on Sunday when Chicago pinch hitter Justin Turner hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Baltimore traded center fielder Cedric Mullins to the New York Mets and right fielder Ramon Laureano and first baseman Ryan O'Hearn to the San Diego Padres at the deadline, so there are openings in the lineup.
One player who will receive a long look is Jeremiah Jackson, a second baseman whose path is blocked by youngster Jackson Holliday.
Though he played in the outfield for just three games in the minors this season, Jackson was recalled after the deadline deals and started in right field for the final two games of the three-game set against the Cubs with Tyler O'Neill (illness) out of the lineup.
Jackson, 25, was the designated hitter Friday in his big league debut. He went 3-for-8 with a walk in the series. Jackson batted fifth on Sunday.
"Really just sticking to an approach," Jackson told reporters. "Just being ready and competing in the box, I think that's really been the biggest separator for me."
Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Jackson was a great fit for the No. 5 hole.
"I just need someone to make contact in that five-hole right there," Mansolino said. "You've got your four best hitters, and the odds are if you're going to create traffic, it's going to be with those four guys at the top. Whoever is sitting in that five-hole has got to put the ball in play. ..."
Orioles left-hander Cade Povich (2-5, 5.15 ERA) will be activated off the 10-day injured list Monday to start against Philadelphia.
Povich, 25, has been sidelined since mid-June due to hip inflammation. His last appearance came in relief when he pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels to get the win.
Povich has never faced the Phillies.
His lone win in 12 starts this season came against the Washington Nationals on April 24.
Philadelphia counters with left-hander Jesus Luzardo (9-5, 4.31), who blanked the Chicago White Sox on two hits over seven innings in a 6-3 win on Tuesday.
Luzardo, 27, hasn't allowed an earned run in five of his victories and gave up just one run in three others.
Luzardo is 0-2 with a 5.59 ERA in 9 2/3 innings over two career starts against the Orioles.

Injuries KO Cubs' Michael Soroka, Reds' Nick Lodolo

August 5 - The starting pitchers in the Cubs' home game against the Reds on Monday -- Chicago right-hander Michael Soroka and Cincinnati left-hander Nick Lodolo -- both exited early due to injuries. Lodolo came out in the second inning due to a blister on his left index finger. Soroka exited after two innings because of discomfort in his right (throwing) shoulder. With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Lodolo motioned to the Reds' dugout after throwing a first-pitch strike to Justin Turner. Nick Martinez then replaced Lodolo on the mound. Lodolo retired all five batters he faced, striking out one. The 27-year-old has pitched a career-high 129-2/3 innings pitched, compiling an 8-6 record and a 3.05 ERA. Soroka, making his Cubs debut on his 28th birthday, allowed just one hit, a solo home run by Tyler Stephenson. Ben Brown took over on the mound to start the third. The Cubs acquired Soroka on Thursday from the Washington Nationals in exchange for two minor league prospects, outfielder Christian Franklin and infielder Ronny Cruz. Through 17 starts this year, Soroka is 3-8 with a 4.86 ERA. --Field Level Media

NBA owner makes record $325m bid to buy WNBA team and relocate to Boston... but sale could have competition

The group led by former NBA owner Steve Pagliuca has officially made a record $325million offer to by the Connecticut Sun. However, his bid might not be the only one coming. While the Pagliuca group made the bid with the intention of moving the Sun to Boston, starting to play games in Beantown as early as 2027, another bidder may be working to purchase the franchise as well, per Front Office Sports. Former Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry is believed to be in 'active competition' with the Pagliuca group to be the next owner of the Sun. Lasry differs from Pagliuca, hoping to keep the team in Connecticut. The Pagliuca bid to purchase the team was accepted by the Mohegan Tribe and was presented to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert last month. However, the move is still pending league approval, as it was never brought before the WNBA's Board of Governors. Multiple outlets reported Saturday that the offer was for $325 million, which would be the most ever paid for a professional women's sports franchise. Pagliuca's group also plans to contribute another $100 million to build a practice facility, per the reports. Pagliuca posted an update of the'"possible acquisition' by his PagsGroup on X on Sunday night. 'An investor group led by PagsGroup, and supported by Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy and Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee, has offered to acquire the Connecticut Sun with the objective of keeping New England's WNBA team in New England,' the statement read. 'No transaction has been agreed yet.' The statement, although it did not specifically name Boston as a new home for the franchise, said the group's goal is 'to play in larger capacity arenas in New England.' 'We believe our record-setting offer and deep commitment to growing the WNBA in the region that is home to the most passionate basketball fans in the nation will significantly benefit the league, the team, and all its fans,' read the PagsGroup's update. The Sun have called Connecticut home since 2003. They play home games at Mohegan Sun Arena, a 10,000-seat facility in Uncasville, Conn. Three WNBA franchises do not have an NBA team that they share a city with, with Seattle and Las Vegas occupying larger markets that have hosted the NBA's Play-In Tournament Finals or an NBA franchise in the past. The Sun hold the league's worst record at 5-22 this season after making the playoffs in each of the eight previous campaigns.

TJ Friedl drives in late game-winner as Reds nip Cubs

August 5 - TJ Friedl's clutch seventh-inning hitting and a replay reversal helped the visiting Cincinnati Reds defeat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Monday in the first of a three-game series between the National League Central playoff contenders. Friedl's blooper to shallow center on a 2-2 pitch from Caleb Thielbar was the Reds' third two-out in the inning. His single brought home Jake Fraley, who doubled to right center off Ryan Braiser (0-1), as the go-ahead run. Tyler Stephenson homered for the Reds, while Dansby Swanson hit a two-run shot to account for the Cubs' offense. The two teams only combined for nine hits in what became a bullpen game due to both starters exiting early with injuries. The teams combined to use 12 pitchers. Reds starter Nick Lodolo retired the first five Cubs he faced but left after throwing a first-pitch strike to Justin Turner. The team later announced the 27-year-old left-hander had a blister on the index finger of his throwing hand. Nick Martinez entered and allowed Swanson's homer, a two-run shot in the third that scored Ian Happ after he led off the inning with a single. Scott Barlow (5-0) allowed just two walks, struck out four in two innings and kept the Cubs from adding to their lead. Michael Soroka's debut for Chicago lasted just two innings. He allowed just one hit, Stephenson's homer, before Ben Brown replaced him on the mound. The Canadian right-hander, who also celebrated his 28th birthday on Monday, left due to right shoulder discomfort, the team announced. Brown cruised through his first three innings, but McLain reached on an infield single with one out in the sixth. The Reds second baseman scored the tying run when Elly De La Cruz hit a check-swing double down the left field line. The Cubs appeared to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out chopper by Swanson, who was initially ruled safe with an infield single plating Willi Castro. However, the Reds challenged the call, and replay showed Swanson missed the bag as Ke'Bryan Hayes' throw resulted in an inning-ending out. Emilio Pagan pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save. --Field Level Media
