Protection order issued for a woman invoking newly amended TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act
Police said Zahir Hussain, 32, from Tiruvannamalai was arrested by Maduravoyal Police for blackmailing and harassing a 27-year-old woman on June 24. Investigation revealed that the woman and Zahir, became acquainted with each other when they were working together for two years. After learning that her family were looking for alliance and she distanced herself from him, he followed her and threatened to stop her marriage by uploading pictures of her with him on social media. She lodged the complaint with the police and he was arrested on charges under provisions of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act 2025 and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Based on directions from the City Police Commissioner A.Arun, Maduravoyal police requested the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Central Chennai to issue a protection order in favour of the victim, and obtained the order on Friday.
Recently in January 2025 , the Tamil Nadu Government had amended the old Tamil Nadu's Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act 1998 to make the law more effective and robust in tune with the present times. Accordingly, a provision was made in Tamil Nadu, which envisaged the issuance of a Protection Order in favour of a woman wherein the accused would be prohibited from attempting to communicate with her in any form including electronic and the breach of the same had been made as recognizable crime, said a senior police officer.

2 killed, 4 injured in Mohali oxygen plant blast
Two workers were killed and four others injured as a powerful explosion ripped through an industrial gas supply unit in Mohali's Phase 9 on Wednesday morning when oxygen cylinders were being loaded onto a truck. According to officials, the impact of the blast was so severe that nearly 40 cylinders were hurled across the yard and the victims bodies left severely dismembered. The deceased have been identified as Devinder Kumar, 27, and Mohammad Asif, 25, both residents of Uttar Pradesh. The injured are Sarvesh, 45, Sachin, 24, Ashok, 44, and Akbar, 50. They are under treatment at the Phase 6 civil hospital. The families of the deceased were in an inconsolable state and staged a nearly two-hour protest at the site, demanding a thorough probe and compensation. Asif's father, Akbar Ali, who works at the same unit, said, 'We have been working here for a long time. Nothing like this has happened before. I don't know whose fault it is but they must be held accountable. I have lost my son. This pain is unbearable.' Devinder's brother Pawan said, 'My brother had been working here for two-and-a-half years. This morning, he had stayed back after his shift for an extra ₹200. His body has been so badly mutilated that we have only found his head.' Deputy superintendent of police, City -2, Harsimran Bal said the factory supervisors have been booked under Section 106 (death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Phase 11 police station. Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmandeep Hans, who oversaw the rescue operations, said, 'The unit supplied nitrogen and oxygen cylinders to various firms and hospitals. Around 9 am today, two men were loading cylinders onto a truck when one exploded. The two workers died on the spot. We are investigating all possible causes, including human error. It is too early to comment on the exact reason.' Deputy commissioner Komal Mittal said the administration had taken cognisance of the incident. 'A police inquiry has been marked to DSP City II, Mohali, and he has been asked to submit a report within a week. While the exact cause cannot be confirmed as of now, preliminary investigations suggest that the cylinder may have suffered an impact during loading, triggering the blast,' she said.

Mohali: Five arrested over land fraud, ₹32 lakh seized; key accused on the run
Police busted an inter-district gang involved in duping property buyers and arrested five individuals, recovering ₹32.5 lakh in cash and five vehicles from their possession. The gang had been operating from a rented house in Morinda for the past four years, police said. (HT File) The operation was led by Karan Sandhu, DSP, Kharar, and SHO Gharuan Balwinder Singh, following a complaint filed by Amarjit Singh, a resident of Gharuan village. The complainant alleged that two individuals, Jagdish Kumar and Avtar Singh, posed as landowners and showed him a property in Luhar Majra Kalan village, Fatehgarh Sahib. The accused allegedly used forged documents and fake identities to execute a fraudulent power of attorney and extracted money from the complainant. SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh said police verified the documents and found the power of attorney to be fake. A case under Sections 319(2), 318(4), 316(2), 336(2), and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Kharar Sadar police station on July 28. 'During interrogation, the arrested duo revealed names of other gang members. Police arrested Bhupesh Mehta alias Mani, Jagtar Singh alias Satnam Singh, and Gurbhej Singh alias Gurbaz. A red car registered in Punjab was recovered from Gurbaz, while other seized vehicles included a Honda Amaze, Brezza, and Skoda,' a senior police officer said. The accused used fake identities—Avtar Singh posed as Bahadur Singh, and Jagdish Kumar as Jeet Singh—and targeted unsuspecting buyers amid rising land prices in the region, police said. Gang providing bank accounts and SIM cards to cyber frauds busted in Greater Noida
Greater Noida Five members of a gang that allegedly provided bank accounts, debit cards, and pre-activated SIM cards to cybercriminals involved in digital arrest and stock trading frauds, were arrested on Wednesday, police said. Officers said that the suspects had data related to around 40 bank accounts and mobile numbers registered with those accounts, and access to the registered numbers was also provided to cybercriminals through an application. (HT Photos) Police identified them as Chanpreet Singh, 25, and Ranvir Singh, 22, both residents of Bhopal; Jagmohan Dhakad, 19, and Naveen Raikwar, 19, from Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh; and Aditya Sharma, 21, hailing from Delhi but living in Surajpur, Greater Noida. 'We received a tip-off that a gang involved in collecting bank account credentials from account holders and providing them to cybercriminals was active in Greater Noida,' said deputy commissioner of police (Central Noida) Shakti Mohan Avasthy. 'With the help of manual intelligence, the suspects were arrested from Surajpur area of Greater Noida,' the officer added. 'Five mobile phones, eight SIM cards, seven debit cards, and other documents were recovered from their possession,' the DCP added. An investigation revealed that the suspects had links with cybercriminals and were providing bank account details to dupe people with fraudulent schemes such as digital arrest. 'They used to acquire the accounts at 1% commission from the account holders and then transfer the credentials to cybercriminals for ₹ 15,000 each,' DCP Avasthy said, adding that all MP residents resided at Aditya's residence and had been operating for two months. Officers said that the suspects had data related to around 40 bank accounts and mobile numbers registered with those accounts, and access to the registered numbers was also provided to cybercriminals through an application. A case under sections of cheating, forgery, and criminal intimidation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the IT Act was registered at Surajpur police station. Investigation is going on to trace transactions made from the compromised bank accounts, police said.
