Domestic Trade Ministry to stay on alert for potential misuse following fuel subsidy rationalisation

The Star6 days ago
ALOR SETAR: Proactive monitoring will be carried out at all petrol stations to prevent any misuse in the purchase of subsidised RON95 petrol by consumers once the petrol subsidy rationalisation exercise is implemented, says Dr Fuziah Salleh.
The Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Minister said her ministry has anticipated various possibilities that would require enforcement officers to be more vigilant during inspections.
'KPDN has already considered possibilities such as a single MyKad being used repeatedly (to purchase subsidised petrol).
'These are among the issues we are aware of and are looking into ways to address,' she said after taking part in an Op Kesan 4.0 inspection at a supermarket here on Friday (July 25).
Fuziah said the use of MyKad allows the government to track any unusual purchases or instances of RON95 petrol being pumped beyond the allowable limit for a single vehicle.
She added that purchase records could help authorities detect unusual fuel transactions, enabling action to be taken, and stressed that KPDN would remain vigilant in identifying any instances of leakage or misuse.
On Op Kesan 4.0, which was launched following the expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) on July 1, Fuziah said 950 premises were inspected, involving 3,965 stock-keeping units (SKUs) nationwide.
Of that number, 950 price information notices were issued under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723) and 23 complaints were received for further investigation.
Op Kesan 4.0 aims to prevent traders from taking advantage by raising prices unreasonably or engaging in profiteering under the pretext of the SST adjustments. – Bernama

Restructuring of chicken egg subsidy takes effect tomorrow, industry to offer Special Grade Eggs

The government today announced the restructuring of chicken egg subsidies, to take effect tomorrow. – Photo by Mohd Faisal Ahmad PUTRAJAYA (July 31): The government today announced the restructuring of chicken egg subsidies, to take effect tomorrow (August 1), as part of a phased and targeted subsidy approach aimed at greater sustainability and higher impact. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in a statement, said the move is in line with efforts to ensure supply security and price stability for chicken eggs. As part of this initiative, it said, the industry has agreed to introduce Special Grade Eggs which will be offered at more affordable prices. It said the public can continue to purchase chicken eggs at competitive prices through the Agro Madani Sale and Rahmah Sale programmes, which are being widely implemented nationwide at sales locations managed by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Farmers' Organisations Authority (LPP). According to KPKM, the government spent nearly RM2.5 billion to subsidise chicken egg prices between February 2022 and December 2024. 'It is a huge amount and temporary in nature to assist both the public and the industry during the Covid-19 pandemic and the global supply chain crisis,' said KPKM. With the market situation now stabilising, it said, the subsidy scheme has been restructured to become more targeted and comprehensive. It said the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will also continue to strengthen enforcement through close monitoring under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 to combat any form of profiteering or price manipulation by irresponsible parties. 'This step is important to ensure that to ensure that prices charged to consumers remain reasonable and fair,' read the statement. For more information regarding the issue of supply or prices of chicken eggs can be channelled to KPDN's official email at [email protected] or via its hotline at 03-80008000. — Bernama

Avoid SARA aid registration scams warns finance minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MOF) has warned the public against falling victim to scams falsely claiming to facilitate registration for the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid initiative. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan clarified that no registration is required, as eligibility is automatically determined using MyKad data. Amir Hamzah stated, 'The government will channel RM100 through MyKad 'one-off' to every Malaysian MyKad holder aged 18 and above who was born in 2007 and below. A total of 22 million Malaysians are eligible to receive this credit individually, and this measure involves an expenditure of RM2 billion.' The minister addressed concerns during the Dewan Rakyat session, responding to queries from Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH-Bukit Bendera) regarding the SARA initiative's distribution process. He reiterated that the National Registration Department (JPN) data will be used to verify beneficiaries, eliminating the need for manual applications. Additionally, Amir Hamzah encouraged small enterprises to register under the SARA initiative to expand access to essential goods. As of July 29, over 4,500 retail premises have enrolled, offering more than 90,000 daily necessities across 14 categories, including food, medicine, and school supplies. 'Entrepreneurs only need to register with Yayasan MyKasih and comply with set requirements. We urge more registrations to widen the initiative's reach,' he said. The government also supports small businesses through micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) schemes to further boost economic participation. - Bernama

Amir Hamzah: Avoid falling prey to SARA aid registration scam

THE Ministry of Finance (MOF) has urged the public not to be deceived by fraud or scam inviting them to register for the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) appreciation initiative announced by the MADANI government, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan (picture). Amir Hamzah said Malaysian citizens do not need to register or apply, as eligibility for the SARA aid is automatic based on the data of all adult citizens who hold a MyKad. He said the data of MyKad holders from the National Registration Department (JPN) will be used for the purpose of crediting SARA awards. 'The government will channel RM100 through MyKad 'one-off' to every Malaysian MyKad holder aged 18 and above who was born in 2007 and below. 'A total of 22 million Malaysians are eligible to receive this credit individually, and this measure involves an expenditure of RM2 billion,' he said during the Minister's Question Time session at the Dewan Rakyat, today. He was responding to a question from Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH-Bukit Bendera) about the registration process to qualify for receiving RM100 under the SARA appreciation initiative for all. Meanwhile, replying to a supplementary question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai), Amir Hamzah said that the MOF welcomes the registration of more small enterprises to be involved in the sale of goods permitted under the SARA initiative. He said that as of July 29, more than 4,500 retail premises are registered, involving the sale of more than 90,000 daily necessities in 14 categories — including basic food items such as rice and eggs, household cleaning, medicines, school supplies and personal hygiene. 'They (entrepreneurs) only need to register with the Yaysan MyKasih and follow the requirements that have been set. We urge (registration), so that we can further expand the available space. 'The government also has many more opportunities to help small enterprises, including schemes involving micro, small and medium enterprises which can be utilised to boost small businesses further,' he added. — BERNAMA
