Police arrest man to assist in probe into nephew's abuse case
Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district deputy police chief Supt C. Tharmalingam said the 34-year-old man was arrested around noon on Sunday (May 11) in Bertam here, following a police report made by the child's father.
"Based on the initial investigation conducted by the police, the child's father, who has divorced his wife (the child's mother), had made a video call to talk to the victim last Friday.
"The child's father, who lives and works in Kelantan, saw his former brother-in-law, who lives in the same house as his ex-wife, caning the child, and the victim was crying at that time," Tharmalingam told Bernama on Monday (May 12).
He said a doctor's examination found bruises on the child's legs, and the man claimed he was not caning his nephew to abuse him but rather because the victim often cried.
Tharmalingam added that further investigations are underway and the man has been remanded for four days from today to assist in the investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. – Bernama

For other four accused were represented by Azhier Farhan Arisin, Abdul Fikry Jaafar, Farah Nazriah Chun Lee, Fareez Salleh and Sylyester Kuan. The court session today was closed, with only the prosecutors and lawyers representing the accused allowed into the courtroom to protect the identities of the minors. Earlier, the accused were believed to have arrived in vehicles with blacked-out windows and entered the court via private entrance. Security around the court complex was tight with police turning away unrelated individuals who tried to enter the building. Court and police authorities initially did not allow reporters to even enter the court building. There were no crowds of Zara supporters outside the courthouse today, unlike on Monday during the mention of the inquest date. Yesterday, the Attorney General's Chambers insisted that prosecutors will continue with its initial charges against the five minors accused of bullying the late Zara Qairina, despite a demand by the family's lawyer for harsher provisions It said the teenagers involved would be charged under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, relating to the offence of using or making any threatening, abusive, or insulting words or communication. Section 507C(1) which handles harassment prescribes a punishment of imprisonment up to one year, fine, or both.

The charges against the five were read before Sessions Judge Elsie Primus in closed proceedings. According to the charge sheet, the five, acting with common intention, allegedly uttered abusive words directed at Zara Qairina, which were heard by the victim and could have caused her distress.

3,367 foreign nationals held, investigated by Selangor immigration in first half of the year
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Immigration Department has detained and investigated 3,367 foreigners through a series of operations from the beginning of this year until July. Its director, Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin said that of the total, 1,030 were sent back to their countries of origin, while 888 were charged in court, with 315 issued compounds for various offences. He said that during the same period, a total of 1,134 foreign nationals were released after a thorough investigation confirmed, among other things, that they possessed valid passports and work permits. "Based on the arrest breakdowns according to district, Petaling recorded the highest number of arrests of 2,208 individuals, followed by 625 people in Klang, each through 283 and 66 operations respectively,' he said during an engagement session with the Selangor Immigration director-general here yesterday. He said the highest number of foreigners at the Semenyih Immigration Depot were Myanmar nationals, with 655 detainees; followed by Indonesians (123), Bangladeshis (98), Indians (35), Pakistanis (20) and others (46). From the prosecution aspect, Khairrul Aminus said 893 cases had been tried, with overstaying being the highest offence at 422, followed by entering and staying in the country without a valid passport or permit (384 cases), with both offences charged under Section 15(1)(c) and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act.
