BUTTERWORTH: Police have arrested five more men to assist in investigations into a slashing case in Jalan Raja Uda here last Friday. Acting Seberang Prai Utara police chief Superintendent C. Tharmalingam said the five suspects, in their 30s, were arrested separately in the state yesterday and taken to court for a remand order. "So far, seven men have been detained to assist in the investigation, including two suspects arrested last Friday. "Investigations are ongoing and police believe their arrest will help in solving the case. "The victim, a 41-year-old man, does not know why he was attacked and slashed with machetes by the group nor does he recognise them," he said today. Tharmalingam said police were working to identify the motive behind the incident, including tracking down the mastermind. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code. Those with any information on the incident should contact investigating officer Inspector Irwan Shah at 04-576 2222 (extension 2275) or go to the nearest police station. In the 7.20pm incident, the victim and a male friend was heading to a restaurant for a meal. Three men attacked the victim with machetes. The victim sought treatment at a private clinic, then was transferred to a hospital. Police arrested two men in their 30s hours after the attack.

Man arrested for allegedly caning 3-year-old nephew

KEPALA BATAS: Police arrested a man to assist in an investigation into an abuse case involving the man's three-year-old nephew in an incident in Pulau Mertajam, Penaga here last Friday. Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district deputy police chief Supt C. Tharmalingam said the 34-year-old man was arrested around noon yesterday in Bertam here, following a police report made by the child's father. 'Based on the initial investigation conducted by the police, the child's father, who has divorced his wife (the child's mother), had made a video call to talk to the victim last Friday. 'The child's father, who lives and works in Kelantan, saw his former brother-in-law, who lives in the same house as his ex-wife, caning the child, and the victim was crying at that time,' Tharmalingam told Bernama today. He said a doctor's examination found bruises on the child's legs, and the man claimed he was not caning his nephew to abuse him but rather because the victim often cried. Tharmalingam added that further investigations are underway and the man has been remanded for four days from today to assist in the investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
