Chinese national jailed a month, fined for attacking immigration officer

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: According to the charge, Fang Fuyuan had intentionally caused hurt to immigration officer Nurdiana Atirah Shapinaz Abdul Rahman, who was working at the KLIA Terminal 1 immigration counter. PETALING JAYA: The Sepang magistrates' court today sentenced Chinese national Fang Fuyuan, 31, to a month in prison and a fine of RM2,000 for hurting an immigration officer at KLIA Terminal 1 on Aug 13. Berita Harian reported that she pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 332 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant. For this offence, a person can be jailed up to three years, fined, or both, upon conviction. According to the charge, she had intentionally caused hurt to immigration officer Nurdiana Atirah Shapinaz Abdul Rahman, who was working at the immigration counter. Fang's lawyers Tai Ying Fong and Jason Anthony had appealed for a lighter sentence on the basis of her young age and lack of a criminal record. '(Fang) has a husband and two small children, aged one and a half and five years, who are completely dependent on her. 'The family is in Malaysia without the support of other family members. 'This was a case of misunderstanding and miscommunication with the immigration officer. It occurred spontaneously and was not planned,' they said. However, deputy public prosecutor Luvithaa Veerasamy pressed for a fitting sentence that would serve as a deterrent to the accused and the public. Fang will serve her sentence starting from the date of her arrest on Aug 13. If she fails to pay the RM2,000 fine, she will serve another two months. Earlier, KLIA deputy police chief Albany Hamzah said statements from four people, including the victim, were recorded in connection with the case. The incident took place at about 7.40pm at the departure hall, when the group was undergoing immigration clearance. The woman was said to have acted aggressively and injured an immigration officer during the process, claiming she was worried about missing her flight. The officer sustained a swollen left eye and pain on the right side of her head following the assault. She was sent to Cyberjaya Hospital for treatment. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? In a statement on Monday, the team welcomed the Attorney-General's decision to bring charges, describing it as in line with their earlier recommendations. They noted that their proposal on 14 August urged prosecution under Section 507D(2) of the Penal Code, following Bukit Aman investigations that revealed evidence pointing towards bullying. The lawyers stated that they are not yet aware of the identities of the individuals who will be charged or the exact provisions that will be applied in court. The family's legal team comprises Hamid Ismail, Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M Borhan, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Salleh and Farrah Nasser. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Man jailed 12 months for punching driving school instructor, kicking car

BATU PAHAT: A man who assaulted a driving school instructor by punching him in the face until he bled, and damaged a vehicle in an incident that went viral, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment after pleading guilty in the magistrates' court here today. Mohammad Rizal Mulyadi, 33, was also fined RM5,000 after entering the plea when both charges were read out before magistrate Arun Noval Dass. The court ordered him to serve 12 months in jail if he failed to pay the fine, which he was unable to do. On the first charge, he was accused of intentionally causing injury to a 56-year-old driving school instructor at the Parit Sulong police station compound at 1.30pm on Aug 12. The offence was committed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to one year's imprisonment, a fine of RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. On the second charge, he was accused of kicking the driver's side door, causing a dent, and smashing the windscreen of a car belonging to a driving institute in Taman Mutiara, Parit Sulong, at the same time and date. He was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison term of up to five years, or a fine, or both. Based on the facts of the case, the complainant, who is also the victim, was on his way from Muar to Parit Sulong with four students when he was stopped by the accused, who was riding a motorcycle. After dropping off one of the students in Taman Mutiara, the accused blocked him again, got off his motorcycle, punched the car windscreen and kicked the driver's side door in anger. He then punched the victim in the face, causing injuries. Police investigations showed that the incident arose from the accused's anger after the victim overtook him, reportedly nearly causing a collision. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Firdaus Ruslan, while the accused was represented by Haryanti Othman from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
