Smooth traffic on Minto Bridge surprises commuters
Located at the intersection of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Marg and Swami Vivekananda Marg (formerly Minto Road), the century-old railway underpass is typically among the first to flood during the rains, bringing traffic to a halt and drawing criticism over poor civic preparedness. However despite heavy rainfall, vehicles moved smoothly through the underpass, with no signs of water accumulation. A video of the clear roadway quickly went viral, with social media users expressing disbelief and cautious optimism. Minto Bridge connects key points like Connaught Place, New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi, and Darya Ganj, making its monsoon performance a barometer of city infrastructure.
'This is the change Delhi is witnessing under the BJP government in just a few months!' posted BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya, crediting the improvement to the civic efforts led by CM Rekha Gupta. Whether this is a one-off win or a sign of systemic improvement remains uncertain. For now, the residents are relieved to see the city's most flood-prone spot stay above water.

Sultry weather to continue, AQI rises
New Delhi: Delhiites endured another day of sultry weather, yearning for showers. As rain eluded Delhi, the heat index, or 'feel-like' temperature, remained high for the second consecutive day. No respite is expected as scattered rain activity is likely over the next few days. According to the India Meteorological Department , the maximum temperature on Friday rose to 36.9 degrees Celsius. Coupled with high humidity, the 'feel-like temperatures' pushed discomfort levels even higher, making outdoor conditions unpleasant. The heat index was 47.1 degrees Celsius on Friday at 2.30 pm compared to 45.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday at the same time. The minimum temperature settl ed at 28 degrees Celsius. "There is a possibility of very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning from Saturday to Monday," said a Met official. From Waterlogging To Traffic In Gurugram: What Minister ML Khattar Told NDTV
New Delhi: Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who served as the Chief Minister of Haryana for 10 years from 2014 to 2024, said connectivity has improved in Gurugram and traffic during normal days, when it doesn't rain, has improved compared to pre-2014. The minister, speaking at the NDTV Real Estate Conclave, said, "Delhi settled way before Gurugram did. Planning of the city in Haryana started around 2010, and by 2013, some work was done, but in 2014, when the BJP came to power, the situation was bad, with traffic jams at several places in Gurugram, like IFFCO Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk and Rajiv Chowk." He added that "whenever someone got stuck here, they couldn't get out of it for two hours, whether a car or a scooter, but when it came, we renovated made a bypass, underpasses." Someone of the most posh areas of Gurugram, Millennium City, was submerged after heavy rain. Urban planning and the poor drainage system of Gurugram are blamed for the waterlogging situation, which gets worse every year when it rains heavily. Mr Khattar said he is "worried" about the waterlogging situation in Gurugram. The former Chief Minister of Haryana said, We have to the planning in the beginning, how much water is there, and what is the command area of the water... Earlier, the rainwater would flow out and go to the fields, lakes, and there was no need to now, the whole area is covered with roads and houses, and there is no place for water to stop." "There should be more drains and sewage systems that should have been made now, we have made many," the minister said. While explaining the waterlogging in the underpasses during rain, Mr Khattar said, "Water fills up quickly in the underpass, but after 2 hours the water comes and whenever there is heavy rain, not just in India but also abroad, if waterlogging happens, after 1-1.5 hours it comes out, which means the system is fine." 'Can't Uproot An Entire System Overnight' NDTV asked, 10 years is enough for an authority to fix the drainage system, but why do we keep saying that the rain pattern has changed in the last decade? Mr Khatter responded by saying, "Work is being done continuously, and once a city is settled, then you can't uproot a system overnight and make a new one. When any work goes on for 2-3 years, we cannot do anything during that period. It takes time to redevelop all these systems." He added that even in Lutyens Delhi, the power centre of India, the rainwater flows to the Barapulla drain, which is on top, but the Lutyens drain is how will the water flow to Barapulla? Lower the Barapullaa the Yamuna is full of mud and its water backflows. During heavy rain in some areas of Lutyens, there is at least two feet of waterlogging."

Hot and humid Delhi swelters in 45.9-degree Celsius feel-like temp
New Delhi: A day of no rain left Delhiites in sweltering heat. The high humidity led to a high heat index, or feel-like temperature, too. That was 45.9 degrees Celsius at 2.30 pm and 47.8 degrees Celsius at 5.30pm on Thursday. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain on Thursday night, but patchy rain is expected from Friday to the end of the month. The relative humidity oscillated between 58% and 94%. As there was no rain but patchy cloud cover throughout the day, the discomfort, especially during the afternoon, was high. Neighbouring Faridabad logged 9.5mm of rainfall. The minimum temperature at Safdarjung settled at 25 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. IMD has not issued any colour-coded warning for the next seven days. As no intense rain activity is expected on Friday, hot and humid conditions are expected, with the day temperature predicted to stay between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius. In June so far, Safdarjung has logged 151.3mm of rainfall as opposed to the normal of the entire month of 209.7 mm. Out of 10 rainy days this month so far, the city has mostly seen spells of light to moderate rainfall. In July last year, Safdarjung recorded 203.7 mm of rainfall. In July 2023, it received 384.6mm of rainfall, including two consecutive days of rainfall with over 100mm. Delhi's air quality, meanwhile, continued to stay satisfactory with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 91. It was 67 a day earlier. According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi (EWS), the forecasting body under the Union ministry of earth sciences, the air quality is likely to remain satisfactory till Sunday.
