Seat talks must be on national basis, says Amanah

Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said the coalitions in the unity government must ensure nobody feels slighted during negotiations for nationwide seat distribution.
PETALING JAYA : Amanah has urged for seat negotiations between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Melaka to be based on the coalitions' national partnership, instead of being focussed on the state alone.
Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said it is not right to conduct negotiations in Melaka without considering the distribution of seats nationwide and in other states, Sinar Harian reported.
'For example, we have given seats to BN in Selangor (in the August 2023 state election). As such, BN should also make way for PH in Melaka.
'If negotiations are only focussed on one state, they will ask for more when it comes to other states,' he was quoted as saying.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh recently rejected a proposal from nine Melaka DAP branches for PH and BN to contest 14 seats each in the upcoming state election, telling DAP to 'dream on' after the matter was reported by China Press, a local daily.
However, he misinterpreted the report as saying that the proposal was made by nine DAP divisions rather than branches.
Melaka DAP publicity secretary Kerk Chee Yee clarified that this was merely a grassroots proposal by the branches and that the state chapter had yet to discuss the matter.
The Melaka assembly has 28 seats, 20 of which are held by BN, five by PH and three by Perikatan Nasional.
Khalid said the coalitions in the unity government must ensure nobody feels slighted in negotiations for nationwide seat distribution.
'We do not want (a situation in which) only one party benefits while the other has to give way. Negotiations need a give-and-take spirit for the sake of the unity government's stability,' he said.

Tengku Zafrul says no by-election bid, will serve full Senate term

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz today dismissed speculation that he is seeking to trigger a by-election following his decision to leave Umno and apply to join PKR. The senator who is also serving as investment, trade and industry minister said no discussions had taken place regarding any by-election at either the federal or state level. 'Firstly, regarding speculation about participation in any by-election, whether at the federal or state level, I would like to make it clear that no such discussion has ever taken place, and it was never part of my considerations in making this decision,' he wrote in a Facebook post, after completing his Haj pilgrimage with his wife. He added that he strongly disagreed with holding by-elections without compelling reasons, as they come at a cost to the public. 'I firmly do not agree with triggering a by-election without urgent necessity, as by-elections also involve the time and money of the people. 'I will continue to carry out my responsibilities as a member of the Dewan Negara until the end of my service in December 2025,' he said Tengku Zafrul also reiterated that matters related to his ministerial position are entirely up to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'I am always ready to serve the country in any capacity,' he said, adding that he had left the corporate sector with the intention of contributing to public service. The banker-turned-minister clarified that his exit from Umno was a personal decision and not made under pressure. He thanked Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the party's supreme council and grassroots members for their support during his time in the party.

DAP's Bandar Utama rep Jamaliah Jamaluddin announces marriage to long-time partner

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin today announced that she has tied the knot. The Selangor executive councillor for public health and environment said she had married her partner whose name she gave only as 'Joshua' in a private ceremony. 'With great gratitude to Allah SWT, I would like to share one happy news that is very personal to me — Alhamdulillah with His permission, my spouse and I have safely married yesterday,' the DAP state lawmaker wrote in a Facebook post this morning. Jamaliah said the wedding was held in a 'small and intimate setting' attended by immediate family members and close friends who had known the couple since their secondary school days. 'The decision was made based on discussions with family, and in respect of the family's request to focus on the wisdom of the marriage bond itself.' She added that Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari – her former 'boss' who had also 'once mentored my husband while undergoing industry training' – and Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin were among those present for the marriage ceremony. Jamaliah also apologised to those who might feel left out of the quiet ceremony. 'Humbly, I apologise if this decision creates a feeling of disregard or displeasure to any party. 'It was not an easy decision, apart from friends and family members, I know many of the members and party leaders also always pray and expect the best for me,' she posted. She said the ceremony was made with 'great care' and guided by the agreement of both families. 'InshaAllah, my partner and I hope there will be another space and time to celebrate this happiness together with friends and acquaintances in a more open and lively atmosphere.'

Why target netizens over comments on PKR polls, says Rafizi

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli claimed that the actions taken against the social media users were a form of intimidation. PETALING JAYA : Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli has questioned the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and police for taking action against several netizens who had commented on PKR's recently concluded party polls. Rafizi said he received numerous complaints from members of the public, who claimed they were being subject to various actions by the MCMC after posting comments on the PKR elections on social media. He said some of them were told that their content breached the law, while others were approached by MCMC and police officers for a 'meeting'. Some were also formally notified that they were under investigation and had their smartphones as well as SIM cards confiscated. Rafizi, who lost his PKR deputy presidency in last month's elections, claimed that most of the content under probe were simply people's personal views on the party polls, and did not breach any law. 'After going through these complaints, my view is that this is a form of intimidation to pressure the public so they would refrain from posting content on the PKR elections. 'I believe Prime Minister (and PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim and communications minister Fahmi Fadzil did not issue such an order. 'Perhaps there are certain characters, using the names of ministers, who ordered the MCMC or police to pressure the public, just because they had different views on the party elections,' he said in a statement. Rafizi, the Pandan PKR chief, urged the authorities to cease from carrying out any further action against the netizens involved. He said several lawyers have volunteered to represent the social media users pro bono to challenge the actions taken by the authorities. Rafizi had lost the PKR deputy president's post to Nurul Izzah Anwar last month, and later resigned as economy minister. He is currently on leave and will officially vacate his minister's post on June 17.
