Bollywood has numerous actors who, though came from a family of actors, couldn't establish themselves as celebs in the industry. These actors either did one or two films or just disappeared after their debut. Today, we will speak about an actress who shares a close connection with Alia Bhatt, gave a superhit debut, and still disappeared from Bollywood.
This actress shared the screen with Kunal Kemmu and gave a blockbuster. Her acting was praised, and fans thought that they would see more of her in different movies. However, fate had other plans for her. The actress in discussion is none other than Smilie Suri, the sister of Mohit Suri, and the talented Alia Bhatt.
Smilie made her debut in the blockbuster Kalyug and captivated the hearts of the audience. Smilie, who shared a deep connection with her uncle Mahesh Bhatt, wished to make a career in Bollywood. However, the complete opposite happened.
Despite giving a hit film as her debut, Smilie Suri left Bollywood. Not just her professional life, but Smilie's personal life also remained in headlines. There was a point in her life, which wreaked havoc for her.
The actress talked about this difficult phase of her life in an interview with Siddharth Kannan. She said—'I married choreographer and dance teacher Vineet Bangra in 2014. But, after 2 years of marriage, he suddenly left me. I kept pleading with him, but he did not stop. His parents also did not help me, after which I broke down.'
Smilie Suri talked about her depression and said, 'I locked myself in a room. After he left, I went into depression. I could not understand what was happening to me. Even today, many people in my family call me crazy. Even today, I am struggling with anxiety. But then I thought that the people whose words I am paying attention to do not care about me.'
After her exit from movies, Smilie now gives her time to dance.

Once A Sex Worker And Bar Dancer Earning Rs 3K Per Night, Now A Top Name In Bollywood

You've probably seen films such as Kalyug (2005), Woh Lamhe (2006), Awarapan (2007), Dhokha (2007), Raaz - The Mystery Continues (2009), Murder 2 (2011), and Jannat 2 (2012), each offering compelling narratives and impressive cinematic execution. While the actors, directors, and singers may be well known to audiences, the real creative force behind these films was someone else entirely. The defining strength of these works lies in their writing, crafted by the exceptionally talented Shagufta Rafique. Not only did she write the screenplays, but she also took charge of dialogue and occasionally direction. However, Shagufta Rafique's own life story is as powerful, if not more so, than the scripts she has penned. Her journey has been marked by deep emotional turmoil and unimaginable hardship. It was filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt who recognised her talent and brought her into the Bollywood film industry, giving her a crucial opportunity. In 2006, she wrote Woh Lamhe, her first major project, and went on to deliver several box office hits. Shagufta Rafique's personal life has been fraught with challenges. To this day, she remains unaware of her biological mother's identity. She was raised by the actress Anwari Begum. Some speculate she may have been Anwari's granddaughter, while others believe she was a foundling. The truth about her parentage remains a mystery. Owing to severe poverty, Shagufta Rafique was driven into the sex trade and began dancing at private gatherings. In an interview with Filmfare, she revealed that those parties had a brothel-like atmosphere where even respectable men would accompany other women. This happened when Shagufta Rafique was just 17 years old. Besides sex work, she also worked as a bar dancer in Dubai. In another Filmfare interview, she mentioned earning Rs 3,000 per night from that job. Acting on someone's advice, she reached Dubai and became a bar dancer. Shagufta Rafique experienced love for the first time during her time as a bar dancer in Dubai, where she entertained men through singing, dancing, and performance. It was there that she met a 45-year-old man who, after watching her dance, showered her with money. They eventually fell in love, though the relationship did not lead to marriage. In 2002, Shagufta Rafique met Mahesh Bhatt, who gave her the chance to write. In 2006, she contributed scenes to Mohit Suri's Kalyug and later went on to write Woh Lamhe, Murder 2, and Aashiqui 2.

Atif Aslam's father dies months after heart attack; singer bids goodbye to his ‘Iron Man' with adorable picture

Atif Aslam is going through a personal upheaval as his father, Muhammad Aslam, has passed away. Months after surviving a heart attack, Atif's father breathed his last at 77. The Pakistani singer took to his Instagram handle to share an emotional tribute to his father, along with an adorable picture of him kissing his father on the cheek. 'A final goodbye to my Iron Man. Rest in love, Abu g. Keep us in your prayers,' Atif wrote in the caption. While his Instagram handle can't be accessed in India currently, multiple screenshots of his post were spotted on social media. Several other Pakistani celebrities, from the film and music industries, also took to social media to condole the death of his father. As per the Times of India, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also prayed for the family's strength in the trying times ahead. Atif also requested his fans to keep his father in their prayers. The final rites of Atif's father will take place in Valencia Town in Lahore following Asr prayers. Atif was born to Muhammad Aslam and Rehana Shaheen in Wazirabad, Punjab in 1983. He also has three brothers — Shahzad Aslam, Shahbaz Aslam, and Shiraaz Aslam — who have collaborated with him professionally too, as his photographer, designer-manager, and website coordinator respectively. Atif started his music career as a member of the Pakistani band Jal. They sang the iconic track 'Aadat', which was later used in Mohit Suri's 2005 romantic thriller Kalyug. After separating from Jal, Atif released his own album 'Jal Pari' in 2004, which turned out to be a hit. It was followed by more popular albums like 'Doorie 'and 'Meri Kahani' in 2006 and 2008 respectively. Atif made his debut in Hindi cinema with the popular track 'Woh Lamhe Woh Baatein' from Suri's 2005 directorial debut Zeher. He reprised Aadat as 'Aadat – Juda Hoke Bhi' in Kalyug the same year. Atif then gained more popularity in India with memorable tracks like the title track of Onir's Bas Ek Pal (2006), 'Pehli Nazar Mein' from Abbas-Mustan's 2008 hit crime thriller Race, 'Bakhuda Tumhi Ho' from Kismat Konnection (2008), 'Tu Jaane Na' and 'Tera Hone Laga Hoon' from Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009), 'Main Rang Sharbaton Ka' from Phata Poster Nikhla Hero (2013), 'Jeena Jeena' from Badlapur (2015), 'Tere Sang Yaara' from Rustom (2016), 'Hoor' from Hindi Medium (2017), 'Dil Diya Gallan' from Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), and 'O Meri Laila' from Laila Majnu (2018). As his songs began to make his way back into Indian cinema a few years later, another ban has now been imposed after the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year. Even the Instagram handles of Atif and other Pakistani artists can't be accessed in India anymore.

Aalim Hakim Shares Pic With Mohit Suri Amid Saiyaara Success: ‘Hair Is Never Just Style'

Celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim celebrates Saiyaara's success, praising Mohit Suri's artistry and recalling their two-decade journey of crafting iconic on-screen looks. Mohit Suri's Saiyaara has become the biggest blockbuster of 2025, and Ahaan Panday's character of Krish Kapoor has secured a permanent place in audiences' hearts. Audiences have loved him not only as a person but also for the looks he dons in the film, which have made female fans crush hard on him. However, behind every final look, there are a series of tests and discussions. Similarly, Ahaan's look as Krish Kapoor with messy hair has become a new trend, and it was celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim who designed it. As the movie continues to shatter records, Hakim took to his Instagram to share a picture with the man behind the lens, whose vision made Ahaan a star, Mohit Suri, and along with it, he shared a series of movie posters of Suri's films for which he has designed the looks. Aalim Hakim's nostalgic post While getting emotional, Aalim wrote, 'From Zeher (2005) to Saiyaara (2025), I've had the rare honour of being part of every chapter of @mohitsuri's extraordinary journey. Over these two decades, I've seen Mohit's magic up close — the way he shapes characters that are raw, organic, and painfully real, yet still carry that breathtaking cinematic glow." 'Hair is never just style… it's the silent poetry of a character — a language that speaks straight to the heart without a single word. And with Mohit Suri, every strand becomes part of a story that lingers long after the credits roll," he further added. Aalim then recalled the movies he has worked on with Suri and shared, 'From Zeher, Kalyug, Awarapan, Raaz, Woh Lamhe, Murder 2, Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain, Half Girlfriend, Malang, Ek Villain Returns to now Saiyaara — every film has been a lesson in storytelling through detail. Mohit lives in his process — endless look tests, letting actors breathe into their roles, watching them quietly, and above all, listening… truly listening. He takes every suggestion with humility, turning it into something greater than you imagined." 'What makes Mohit's artistry rare is his perfect balance — nothing ever feels fake, yet everything feels larger than life. His frames hold truth and beauty in equal measure. Two decades. Countless characters. And a brotherhood built on trust, respect, and shared dreams. For every aspiring filmmaker, Mohit's journey is living proof that focus, humility, and relentless passion will always create timeless magic. Here's to the stories we've told… and the ones we've yet to create," he concluded. About Saiyaara's success Despite new film releases such as Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 and Triptii Dimri–Siddhant Chaturvedi's Dhadak 2, Saiyaara is holding strong at the box office, with steady collections and positive word of mouth. The film has maintained a remarkable run at the box office, collecting over ₹300 crore in India within three weeks. Saiyaara, written by Rohan Shankar and Sankalp Sadanah, features great supporting performances from Geeta Agrawal Sharma, Sid Makkar, Shaad Randhawa, Rajesh Kumar, and Varun Badola. The film also marks the first collaboration between filmmaker Mohit Suri and the legendary production company Yash Raj Films. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
