IEW 2025 draws over 6,500 delegates, US$2.5 mln in biz opportunities
KUCHING (July 15): The 6th International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 was officially launched today with Sarawak positioning itself as a clean energy hub for the Asia-Pacific, attracting over 6,500 delegates and an estimated US$2.5 million in immediate business opportunities.
Themed 'From Sarawak to the World: Journey to Clean Energy Leadership', the three-day event aims to spark regional transformation through innovation, strategic partnerships and policy dialogue.
IEW 2025 organising chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Rahmat said IEW is designed to go beyond business matchmaking by catalysing long-term partnerships that drive real change in the energy sector.
'Think beyond transactions. Forge partnerships that fuel transformation. Embrace innovation that can scale.
'Collaborate with those who share your vision of a sustainable, inclusive energy future,' he said in his opening speech at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.
The event was launched by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Now in its sixth edition, IEW has grown from a regional forum into what Abdul Rahman described as the Asia-Pacific's leading platform for energy dialogue, innovation and partnership.
He said the event this year features over 400 exhibiting companies across the full energy spectrum, including renewables, hydrogen, smart grids, carbon capture and green infrastructure.
'We are showing the world what it means to be the 'Battery of Asean,' not only through our resources but through our policies, people, and partnerships,' he said, highlighting Sarawak's leadership in Malaysia's hydrogen economy and its status as home to the country's first commercial-scale hydrogen facilities.
Abdul Rahman said the event is designed to serve as a catalyst for opportunity, bringing together government leaders, industry pioneers and young talent.
'We're not just organising sessions – we are engineering solutions. Each panel, networking moment, and technology showcase is designed to spark meaningful dialogue, actionable partnerships, and measurable outcomes.'
IEW 2025 also supports Malaysia's broader ambitions to accelerate the energy transition, strengthen energy security and enhance international cooperation.
Over the course of the summit, delegates will hear from 50 of the energy sector's most influential voices across 20 strategic sessions, including keynote addresses from the Premier of Sarawak and regional ministers.

Malakoff inks MoU with EESB to develop green power projects in Sarawak
KUCHING: Independent power producer Malakoff Corp Bhd today formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with real estate and construction group Evergreen Earth Sdn Bhd (EESB) to develop Sarawak's green power projects. The MoU exchange ceremony was held in conjunction with International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. It was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation. The MoU was exchanged between Malakoff's business development head, Shaja Ibrahim, and EESB director, Datuk Mohamad Danel Abong. In a joint statement, Malakoff and EESB said the collaboration covers feasibility studies, site assessments, project development strategies and local partnership models related to solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewable energy (RE) ventures. "The collaboration will also encompass the sharing of technical expertise, regulatory insights and market intelligence, as well as coordinated efforts to engage with relevant authorities and stakeholders to secure necessary approvals and grid integration. "These joint efforts are aligned with Sarawak's Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 and Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), supporting the country's long-term sustainability and clean energy goals," said the statement. Malakoff managing director and chief executive officer Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib said green power projects represent a significant step towards accelerating Malaysia's energy transition. "By supporting Sarawak's efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and diversify its renewable energy mix, we are contributing to the development of a more sustainable and future-ready energy ecosystem. "These projects are expected to deliver strong economic value through job creation, upskilling of local talent and the development of rural infrastructure. This partnership builds on Malakoff's broader RE progress, which includes a total generating capacity of 198 megawatt (MW) across solar, waste-to-energy and small hydropower assets," he said. Anwar Syahrin also said that as of June this year, Malakoff's rooftop solar capacity reached 63.6 MW, while in 2024, its RE portfolio generated 67.0 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity.

KUCHING (July 16): Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (MDS) Malaysia has officially launched its new Shell GTL SaraCare product range, marking another milestone in demonstrating the company's Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) technology and its capabilities in driving innovation. The launch took place during the International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday and was officiated by State Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni. Shell Malaysia Country Chair and Vice-President of Upstream Malaysia, Siti Sulaiman, said the launch reaffirms Shell's dedication to innovation and excellence. 'Today's launch reaffirms our unwavering commitment to continuous innovation and excellence in serving our customers. Shell MDS Malaysia is proud to be among the pioneers in GTL technology – home to Shell's first commercial-scale GTL plant in the world,' she said in a press release. 'For over three decades, we have been learning, evolving, and pushing the frontiers of GTL innovation to meet and exceed our customers' expectations. We believe SaraCare represents a meaningful milestone that will resonate with them.' Shell GTL SaraCare is a premium, high-purity wax derived from natural gas. Its stable and safe-to-use ingredients offer superior performance as rheology modifiers, skin feel modifiers, waterproofing agents, wear resistance agents, structuring agents, and binding agents – making it an ideal component in the formulation of personal care and cosmetic products. The name SaraCare pays tribute to Sarawak, the state in which the product originates, with 'Sara' derived from the name Sarawak itself. The new product forms part of Shell MDS Malaysia's growing portfolio of specialty waxes, further strengthening its presence in the global market. Among those present at the launch were Shell MDS Malaysia general manager Amir Bakar, Shell Malaysia director of Corporate Relations Cindy Lopez, and Shell MDS general manager of Marketing Au Tong Sing. Commissioned in 1993, Shell MDS Malaysia is the world's first commercial GTL plant.
