WITH August's scorching weather showing no signs of letting up, staying cool at home has become more essential than ever.
This is why an electric fan is likely to become your new best friend for the coming weeks, while you try to take the edge off and feel cooler.

But a new study from Australia suggests using the humble device could do more harm than good by increasing your risk of a heart attack.
Scientists from the University of Sydney recruited 20 people to test how fans affect body temperature, heart rate, sweating and comfort when used in a hot and humid environment.
They also wanted to find out whether hydration levels made any difference, since it's already known that fans can sometimes make heat stress worse.
The participants completed the experiment in a climate-controlled chamber set to 39.2C with 49 per cent humidity.
In two of the sessions, they were well hydrated, having consumed the recommended amount of fluids for 24 hours beforehand, and were also allowed to drink during the trial.
In the other two sessions, they were deliberately dehydrated by avoiding fluids and foods with high water content for 24 hours and were not permitted to drink during the trial.
Each hydration state was tested both with and without the use of a fan.
A series of temperatures were measured, including their heart rate, rectal temperature, whole body sweat rate, thermal discomfort, and thirst level.
The results revealed that fan use while dehydrated can worsen heart strain, which can eventually lead to heart attacks.
The experts concluded that using a fan increased sweat losses by about 60 per cent, which could mean using a fan is more harmful if you are dehydrated.
How to stay cool during hot weather
The study lead, Connor Graham PhD said: "Most extreme heat decedents do not have air conditioning but often own electric fans.
"Fan use can reduce heat-related elevations in thermal and cardiovascular strain at temperatures up to approximately 39 to 40C.
"In hotter conditions, fans should be turned off, as they can worsen heat stress.'
This, Connor said, is because the high temperature of the air causes the body to heat up faster than it can cool itself by sweating.
This isn't the first time fans have been linked to an increased risk of heart issues.
Previous research has found that fan use can reduce heat and heart strain in temperatures up to around 39C, but once the mercury edges past 40C it's better to turn them off.
Researchers have previously also recommended only using fans when it's below 39C for healthy adults below 40 years old and 38C for older adults 65 or older.
They also warned fans should only be used in temperatures above 37C in older adults on anticholinergic medications like oxybutynin for bladder control.

Now research suggests that women use exclamation marks more than men – who believe the punctuation to be feminine and emotional. Users of exclamation marks were also seen as being warmer, more enthusiastic and emotional but low in power and analytical thinking, the study found. Researchers at Pennsylvania State University studied 1,100 men and women to evaluate how they use exclamation marks in emails, text messages and group chats, and the reasons for their use. In one of five experiments, 61 per cent of people believed the writer was female when the sender used exclamation marks, compared to 21 per cent who did not think it was a woman. A second test found that men were around 25 per cent less likely to use exclamation marks, while another found that women were 30 per cent more likely than men to use them in texts. Senders who used exclamation marks were seen as around 20 per cent warmer than those who did not. The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, said: 'Women may use exclamation points more than men because they more strongly believe it is expected of them, and men may hold back because they believe such behaviour is seen as feminine.' It added: 'Intriguingly, women thought more strongly than men that exclamations would improve general impressions and perceived warmth. This may be because women perceive stronger backlash against them for being perceived as 'cold' if they do not use exclamations.' Researchers also suggest that 84 per cent of women worried about whether or not they should use exclamation marks. 'Women reported being more conscious than men of their use of exclamation points, often feeling they used too many exclamations and worrying about how others perceive this usage. 'This suggests that balancing the use of exclamation points to meet society's expectations of warmth, while avoiding the reduction of other perceptions, is particularly challenging for women,' they said. Researchers believe their findings show that in situations where a signal of warmth is important, people should use more exclamation points and where a projection of power is important, people should limit such usage. Exclamation marks were invented by 14th-century scholar Alpoleio da Urbisaglia but it took 50 years for scholar Coluccio Salutati to use them in writing.

Cricketer Shane Warne 's legacy lives on more than three years after the death of the great spin bowler from a heart attack at the age of 52. Warne died in March 2022 after suffering cardiac arrest while on holiday on the Thai island of Koh Samui. The cause of his sudden death led his business team and family to unite to honor his life and create Shane Warne Legacy. The charity set up free heart health checkup machines at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the past two Boxing Day tests. The results of the stadium checks along with 311 community pharmacy stations across Australia were analyzed as part of a Monash University-led study. A total of 76,085 people were screened across seven weeks from mid-December 2023 to the end of January 2024, including 7,740 at the MCG. The research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology on Friday showed almost seven out of 10 (68.9%) had at least one uncontrolled risk factor for heart disease. Factors were elevated blood pressure readings (37.2%), elevated body mass index (60.5%) and being a smoker (12.1%). Cricket spectators who did the free checks, mostly men aged 35 to 64, had higher rates of elevated blood pressure and body mass index than those screened at pharmacies. Warne revived and elevated the art of leg-spin bowling when he emerged on the international scene in the 1990s and was a central character in one of Australia's most successful eras in the sport. He also was one of cricket's larger-than-life showmen. Warne held the record for the most test wickets with 708 when he retired in 2007 after his 145th match. Only Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has passed him, with 800. 'Meeting people where they are, whether that's at their local pharmacy or the MCG, can make all the difference to health outcomes,' said Dr. Sean Tan, a cardiologist and researcher at the Victorian Heart Institute. Warne's long-time personal assistant Helen Nolan said the findings reinforced Shane Warne Legacy's mission to turn his death into a catalyst for change. The charity's chief executive described the results as 'bittersweet.' 'We're proud to have helped thousands take their heart health seriously but we know there's still work to do,' Nolan said. New research suggests exposure to some common Pfas or 'forever chemical' compounds causes changes to gene activity, and those changes are linked to health problems including multiple cancers, neurological disorders and autoimmune disease. The findings are a major step toward determining the mechanism by which the chemicals cause disease and could help doctors identify, detect and treat health problems for those exposed to Pfas before the issues advance. The research may also point toward other diseases potentially caused by Pfas that have not yet been identified, the authors said. The study is among the first to examine how Pfas chemicals impact gene activity, called epigenetics. 'This gives us a hint as to which genes and which Pfas might be important,' said Melissa Furlong, a University of Arizona College of Public Health Pfas researcher and study lead author. Pfas are a class of about 15,000 compounds most frequently used to make products water-, stain- and grease-resistant. They have been linked to cancer, birth defects, decreased immunity, high cholesterol, kidney disease and a range of other serious health problems. They are dubbed 'forever chemicals' because they do not naturally break down in the environment The study checked the blood of about 300 firefighters from four departments across the country who were exposed to high levels of Pfas. The chemicals are the main ingredient in most firefighting foam, and are frequently used in 'turnout gear' worn by firefighters because of their heat repelling properties Furlong said she was surprised to find the number of genes and biological pathways that were impacted by Pfas, which suggests the chemicals may cause or contribute to a broad range of health problems. The study did not prove the chemicals cause certain diseases, but findings point to biological changes that might precede disease. Genes play a range of roles in developing or preventing disease, and Pfas essentially change the way the genes are supposed to act, Furlong said. A gene may act as tumor suppressor, but the Pfas interferes with how it expresses, which affects whether cancer develops, or the type of cancer. For example, PFOS, among the most common and dangerous Pfas compounds, reduces levels of miR-128-1-5p, a gene tied to cancer development. Branched forms of PFOS were linked to changes in five other genes, including some that regulate cancer development. Not all compounds impacted gene expressions. The research found connections among Pfas-related gene changes and biological pathways involved in leukemia, as well as bladder, liver, thyroid and breast cancers. Other genes and biological pathways were involved in Alzheimer's disease, and autoimmune and infectious diseases such as lupus, asthma and tuberculosis. Furlong said it remains unclear at which step in the biological processes disease is triggered, but the picture is clear enough to point to possible treatments. Pharmaceutical companies are trying to develop drugs that could alter gene activity and potentially prevent Pfas-linked disease from developing.
