Naga orgs urge Modi to halt India-Myanmar fencing work
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
and home minister Amit Shah to immediately halt the fencing of India-Myanmar border and to restore the Free Movement Regime (FMR) within 20 days.
The Naga organisations, which included the United Naga Council, All Naga Students; Association, Manipur, Naga Women's Union and Naga People's Movement for Human Rights South submitted the petition through Manipur governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.
The Raj Bhavan, in an official statement, said representatives of UNC, ANSAM, NWU, and NPMHR-S met governor Bhalla on Tuesday.
"During the meeting, the representatives expressed concerns over ongoing developments impacting the hill areas, particularly in relation to the Free Movement Regime and border fencing,' it said, adding that the "governor acknowledged the grievances raised and said that the matter would be looked into."
Expressing strong resentment against abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the accelerated ongoing border fencing construction along the India-Myanmar border, the Naga civil organisations said several forms of protests, including "picketing of government offices in Naga- inhabited areas have been undertaken along with protest rallies in Naga inhabited hill districts."
Serving a twenty-day ultimatum, the Naga organisations said "the Govt of India must revoke the notification/order related to the abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) immediately."

The govt's revised border guidelines issued in Dec 2024 limit cross-border movement under FMR to just 10 km from the border and impose a "border pass' system.
Under the earlier FMR, every member of the hill tribes, who is either a citizen of India or a citizen of Myanmar and who is resident of any area within 16 km on either side of the border, can cross over on production of a border pass with one year's validity and can stay up to two weeks per visit. SC proposes panel to manage Banke Bihari temple till HC decides on UP ordinance
. New Delhi: Supreme Court on Monday proposed an interim committee, headed by a retired high court judge and comprising the district collector and Goswamis (pujaris), for management of Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan till Allahabad HC decides the validity of UP govt's ordinance for all-round development of the temple area to provide facilities to pilgrims. A bench of justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi asked additional solicitor general K M Nataraj to seek state govt's response by Tuesday morning, when it will take up a batch of petitions that have questioned the manner in which state govt, prompted by an SC order, had come out with a temple development project proposed to be implemented at a cost of Rs 500 crore. The Goswamis, through senior advocate Shyam Divan, said taking over of the temple through an ordinance was extraordinary as the issue was not before constitutional courts, which were only dealing with alleged mismanagement of Guriraj temple. In the guise of better management of temples in the 'Braj area', the SC passed an order without even hearing temple Goswamis, which prompted the state to issue the ordinance, they said. The bench agreed that such an order without hearing the Goswamis could not have been passed. However, the Justice Kant-led bench said, "It is only for development of the temple and its surroundings. The bench saw a point in Divan's argument and said, "The state cannot be seen coming to the court in a clandestine manner and getting an order set aside in a case which had nothing to do with Banke Bihari temple. We will set aside that part of the order, set up an interim committee to manage the temple and permit the HC to decide the legality of the ordinance." However, the bench was in favour of development around the temple to provide space for parking and places to stay for pilgrims with all facilities. "Religious tourism is assuming great importance. It can also be a big revenue earner and help in job creation. But there has to be adequate facilities to handle pilgrims," it said. The interim committee may also have to induct representatives of Archaeological Survey of India as well as independent architects proficient in ancient building restoration to protect the temple, the bench said.

During the 70s, when tribals were subjected to ruthless exploitation by greedy moneylenders and landlords, he emerged like a messiah for them. The Shibu juggernaut rolled on in Jharkhand and the tribals started believing that their saviour had some supernatural powers and was omnipresent. Santhals from rural areas used to say during Jharkhand Diwas rallies on February 2 in Dumka way back in 70s and early 80s. Guruji had rustic sense of humour and had once made fun of death also. While going for a chopper ride to Masalia, about 40 km from Dumka, to address a poll rally during 2009 assembly polls, Vinod Pandey had suggested this reporter to accompany Guruji on chopper and interview him. Guruji had jokingly said: "The condition of this chopper is bad and it can crash on the way. I am old now and it doesn't matter if I perish in a crash. He is a young man and he should not take the risk." The autumn of the patriarch began in 1995 when his eldest son Durga Soren won the Jama assembly seat. He started calling the shots within the party. He died in 2009. After Durga's death, his younger brother Hemant Soren took over as the successor of Guruji. This led to family feud as Durga's widow Sita Soren was unhappy with Hemant's move. She later joined BJP, but lost Jama assembly polls to JMM Candidate Lois Marandi in 2024 assembly polls. Guruji slowly started to keep himself out of the limelight. On April 15, 2025, Hemant became party president, replacing Shibu. It can be said to be the end of Shibu era in JMM. But Guruji was and will remain the biggest crowd-puller for JMM in days to come. He did not actively campaigned for the party in 2024 assembly polls, but JMM flags with his familiar face and bow and arrow party symbol, kept fluttering in remote areas of the state. JMM formed government in the state later, reminding people that his charisma remained intact.
