How A 3 AM Email Changed Everything For Google's Android Lead Sameer Samat
Sameer Samat, the head of Google's Android ecosystem, revealed how a late-night "cold mail" to Google co-founder Sergey Brin in 1999 turned out to be a crucial moment in his career. In a recent interview, Samat said that at 3:00 am, he sent an email to Brin seeking advice on whether to pursue his startup or attend graduate school. "This is 1999 3 a.m. email," told Business Insider, revealing what he asked Brin: "'What would you do in this situation? I'm sure you had this wrestle with this grad school decision.'" Brin responded within a minute, inviting Samat to Google's office for a discussion. The Google co-founder introduced Samat to several engineers during the meeting, and an impromptu interview took place. Despite being offered a job, he declined to focus on his startup, Mohomine. However, Brin provided valuable guidance and introduced him to investors who later funded his startup. Mohomine was eventually acquired by Kofax, now known as Tungsten Automation. "He didn't have to do any of that," Samat said. "And so I try to pay that forward, too, when people call me up with something similar." He joined Google in 2008 as a Product Manager Director and scaled through the ranks, becoming VP of Product Management at Google Shopping and eventually the General Manager of Google Shopping and Travel. He left Google in 2015 to become President at Jawbone, but returned nine months later as VP/GM of the Android Ecosystem. As President of the Android Ecosystem, Samat oversees the strategic direction and development of Android. He recently announced a leadership restructure, combining the Android and ChromeOS teams under his leadership. Samat advocates for entrepreneurial risk-taking and emphasises the importance of following one's passion. He believes that sometimes, naivety can be beneficial for entrepreneurs, allowing them to take bold steps and achieve success. Samat holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from UC San Diego and has also attended the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School.

Oracle to invest $3 billion in AI, cloud expansion in Germany, Netherlands
Oracle will invest $3 billion in Germany and the Netherlands over the next five years to bolster its infrastructure powering artificial intelligence and cloud offerings in the European market, the company said on Tuesday. The Austin, Texas-based company joins a growing list of technology firms that have pledged tens of billions of dollars to meet robust cloud computing demand as businesses increasingly deploy AI workloads. Last year, Amazon said it would invest 10 billion euros in Germany, bringing its total planned investments in the European country to 17.8 billion euros. Together, big tech companies are expected to spend $320 billion on AI this year. On Monday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the social media giant would spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centers. Demand has been growing for the cloud and AI services offered by firms including Oracle, Microsoft and Google because they can replace or outperform software created by traditional IT firms, some analysts say. Oracle would spend $2 billion in Germany and $1 billion in the Netherlands, the company said in separate statements. Its shares rose 2% in trading before the bell. They have risen nearly 38% so far this year. The company expects its capital spending to surpass $25 billion in fiscal 2026, with the bulk of the expenditure committed to data-center infrastructure, including for AI. "As we bring more capacity online, our revenue and profit growth will further accelerate," Oracle CEO Safra Catz said in June. Oracle has secured a deal with an undisclosed client that is expected to generate over $30 billion in annual revenue for the company starting in fiscal year 2028, according to a regulatory filing last month.

‘Galaxy has played huge role in advancing Android as a whole': Samsung's Sally Jeong on partnership with Google
Samsung has been a long-standing innovator in the smartphone industry, and this innovation hasn't been limited to hardware evolution as the company has also consistently improved the Android software experience, a process that has been instrumental in advancing the Google-owned operating system as a whole, a top executive from the South Korean company has stated. Sally Hyesoon Jeong , EVP and Head of Framework R&D, Mobile eXperience Business, Samsun, further emphasised that the collaborative nature of the partnership between these two tech giants is far more extensive than commonly understood. 'Back in 2011, we launched Galaxy Note 2. My first Android device, so this is very special to me. We launched multi-window on the Galaxy Note 2. It gave people a new way to use a large screen and become a standard for the full mobile industry,' she told The Times of India Tech soon after the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7. Jeong explained how Android 12L brought convenient features for larger screens like taskbars and split screen layout in apps. She said that this collaboration didn't just benefit Galaxy users but also other Android makers and all Android users. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Get ₹2Cr life cover@ ₹700 p.m. ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo 'I can say that the ideas that started with Galaxy have played a huge role in advancing Android as a whole. This has been possible thanks to our long-standing partnership with Google. By introducing new features on Galaxy first, we've been able to contribute to creating a better experience for all Android users,' she added. 'Samsung worked closely with Google for software on Galaxy Z Fold7' One of the main highlights of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the deep integration of Google's Gemini AI capabilities , including Gemini Live, with OneUI 8. When asked about the next phase of Samsung-Google partnership in the foldable space, especially when Google is gradually scaling up its own foldable and smartphone lineup, Jeong said that both the companies will continue to work to continuously expand the ecosystem. 'In 2019, we introduced the world's first foldable device with new software like three-way, multi-window, and flex mode to match. So these kinds of new form factors work well when the Android ecosystem grows with them. So that's why we've always worked closely with Google,' Jeong added. 'Today, I'm really happy to share that our new foldable device comes with one UI 8 and Android 16 together,' she said. 'I can say that the ideas that started with Galaxy have played a huge role in advancing Android as a whole. This has been possible thanks to our long-standing partnership with Google. By introducing new features on Galaxy first, we've been able to contribute to creating a better experience for all Android users,' Jeong highlighted. Noting examples of Samsung-Google collaboration, Jeong said that the Now Bar, first shown on the Galaxy S25, was built together with Google. The feature started with Google Sports and Samsung apps, and now it's an official Android 16 feature so people can check live information more easily with richer applications like Uber and Lyft, globally. 'So, after years of work on large screens, we now have adaptive applications by default. This means Android is totally ready to look great on any screen,' Jeong said, adding that Samsung Galaxy 's DeX feature will now be a part of Android too. AI Masterclass for Students.
