Debate over "that" try continues long after the Lions clinch a series win over Australia
From the Northern Hemisphere, Jac Morgan's cleanout of Carlo Tizzano at the last breakdown Saturday was fair and perfectly executed. From the Southern Hemisphere, Morgan breached rugby's law 9.20 by striking Tizzano above the shoulders which likely in most matches in the south would have been considered endangerment and would have been penalized.
While the Lions woke with the sore heads of celebrants, the Wallabies were left to brood over what might have been.
Australia coach Joe Schmidt was emphatic after the match that Italian referee Andrea Piardi had erred in not penalizing Morgan and ruling out the last-minute try to Hugo Keenan which prevented the Wallabies from leveling the series.
Piardi and his assistant referees closely studied replays of the final ruck before waving away the entreaties of Wallabies captain Harry Wilson and awarding the try. In explanation, Piardi said Tizzano and Morgan had arrived at the ruck at the same time and their collision was part of the normal rough and tumble of the game.
'You just have to read law 9.20 and I guess you just have to listen to the description from the referee and then watch the vision,' Schmidt told a news conference after the match. 'When two players are described as arriving at the same time, just watch the footage.
'Players make errors. Match officials make errors. Our perspective is we felt it was a decision that doesn't really live up to the big player safety push that they're talking about. You cannot hit someone above the level of the shoulders and there's no wrapping with the left arm, the hands on the ground. That's what we've seen, and we've watched a number of replays from different angles. It is what it is. We just have to accept it.'
Some Lions fans even went as far as to accuse Tizzano of 'simulation," by trying to exaggerate the incident to influence the referee.
'I thought it was a brilliant clear-out, honestly, didn't you? It depends on what side of the fence you come from,' Farrell said.
'I thought it was a good clear-out live. I couldn't understand what they were going back for. They seem to go back for everything these days. But I'm so pleased that the referee held his nerve. It was the right decision in my opinion.
'I can understand people's opinions.'
Wallabies and Lions fans clashed on social media long after the crowd of more than 90,000 fans — the most ever to watch the Lions — had left the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Fans from the north and south agreed only that this had been one of the great test matches and most memorable of rugby occasions.

Barcelona strips Ter Stegen of captaincy for refusing to sign medical report
MADRID (AP) — Barcelona has temporarily stripped goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen of the captaincy over his refusal to sign a medical report about his back injury. The club said Thursday that central defender Ronald Araujo will act as first-team captain until further notice. 'Following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, by mutual agreement with the sporting direction and the coaching staff, has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain,' Barcelona said in a statement. The club had opened a disciplinary proceeding against the goalkeeper on Tuesday after discrepancies about the recovery time for the lower back surgery that Ter Stegen successfully underwent last week. Barcelona needed him to sign the injury report so it could be sent to the Spanish league in order to clear some salary-cap space and allow the club to more easily register other players without breaching financial fair play rules. Ter Stegen said ahead of the surgery that the recovery time would be about three months. The club did not give an official timetable for the recovery process, saying only that the operation was 'successful" and that 'his recovery will determine when he can return.' Depending on the length of the recovery process, Barcelona could clear a percentage of Ter Stegen's salary from its cap, making more room to add other players to the squad. The league has to evaluate the report before approving the official time of recovery. The club signed Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García in June. Its other goalkeepers are veteran Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña. Ter Stegen met briefly with Barcelona officials this week, according to Spanish media. The 33-year-old German goalkeeper missed nearly all of last season because of a ruptured tendon in his knee, and in 2023 he missed about two months because of another back operation. Peña and the 35-year-old Szczęsny started in place of Ter Stegen last season. ___

Detroit Lions Considering Adding Pro Bowl Pass-Rusher
There's no denying the Detroit Lions had an excellent year last season, going 15-2 in the regular season, good enough to earn the top seed in the NFC. Yet, when it came to the playoffs, the Lions were so depleted on defense after multiple contributors dealt with injuries. Their absences contributed to an early departure in the Divisional Round Playoffs. Those departures continued in the offseason with Lions offensive and defensive coordinators both accepting promotions to head coaching jobs with other teams. Now, the Lions must find a way to not only outperform last year's shortcomings but also overcome their loss of leadership. That sounds like a tall task, and they may need some more help getting the job done. One area that the Lions have been expected to consider upgrades is at pass-rusher, where they could find a more consistent pressure threat opposite Hutchinson. According to Lions general manager Brad Holmes, the team has considered adding more outside help, even a three-time Pro Bowler. According to Holmes, the Lions still have interest in bringing Za'Darius Smith back to the team after he recorded four sacks in seven starts for them last season. 'Za'Darius did a lot of good things last year for us and we said we're going to keep in contact with his agent, but everything's not just one-sided,' Holmes said. 'Za'Darius has expectations, the team has expectations, so sometimes it takes a while for those things to get on the same page. Especially a guy that's been in the league as long as he has, I'm not saying that he doesn't want to be in training camp, but if he misses some time, there's obviously still interest there and we've been keeping in touch.' While it seems like Smith has been around forever, he's still just 32 years old. He proved he was capable of fitting into the Lions' locker room and even made a strong contribution last season. It may only be a matter of time before he picks up where he left off, but for now, Detroit's giving other players extra opportunities to prove themselves in training camp.
