Commanders Vs. Bengals (preseason game two)

Commanders Vs. Bengals (preseason game two)

Yahoo5 hours ago
After a dreadful showing last week in Foxboro, where Washington sat 30 players, Dan Quinn came out with a pseudo 'starting lineup' at home against the Bengals, and the Commanders, for two series, looked the part.
Then the backups came in…
Regardless of the score, it was important for some key guys to get in some live action in this contest and for the most part, they didn't disappoint. However, with Sam Hartman and Josh Johnson under center, with third and fourth stringers along the offensive line, things got a bit sloppy on offense.
Defense was pretty much the same. The first two groups showed pretty well against Joe Burrow, however our backup got carved up by Jake Browning.
Overall, I think Washington put enough on film to glean some good evaluation by the coaches. One position where it was hard to see anything positive was from our bottom-of-the-roster wide receivers who suffered from poor quarterback play most of the evening.
Below are my Studs and Duds of the game, followed by some notes.
Studs:
Jayden Daniels – Jayden Daniels, in his first action of the preseason, picked right up where he left off last season. Despite not throwing a pass, he showed his playmaking ability dodging a few defender in the backfield and sprinting up the gut for a 14-yard score.
Bill Croskey-Merritt and Chris Rodriguez – Bill and CRod showed why the Commanders are content moving on from the pedestrian Brian Robinson. The duo combined for 108 yards on just 17 carries, and Bill scored his first touchdown (a 27-yard scamper). CRod ripped off a 40-yard gain early in the game to set the tone.
Jaylin Lane – Lane led the receiving corps with three receptions for 42 yards, including a beautiful diving reception. He also had a punt return for 11 yards and one kickoff return for 22 yards.
Colston Yankoff – Yankoff was a beast on special teams recording three tackles including two big hits.
Javon Kinaw – In limited playing time, Kinlaw made his presence felt with two solo tackles and a pressure. I think it's going to be a big year for him.
Duds:
Sam Hartman – For as good as Jayden Daniels is, Hartman is equally as bad. His first pass of the game should have been picked. It didn't take him long however to throw that interception. He finished 4 for 10 for just 29 passing yards and a pick and made things really difficult for coaches to fairly evaluate our receivers.
Bobby Price – Price was abused in coverage all evening allowing multiple receptions and a touchdown catch.
Car'Lin Vigers – Viggers continues to get beat in coverage and was absolutely POSTERIZED in the back of the endzone by Tinsley on a touchdown reception.
Notes:
Our starting offensive line (Wylie, Paul, Biadasz, Allegretti and Conerly) did an excellent job opening up running lanes early in the game. They were mauling the Bengals front seven.
John Bates did a tremendous job blocking during his time with the starters.
Jacob Martin did a nice job getting pressure on the Bengals quarterbacks. He recorded three quarterback hits and half a sack on Burrow (which he shared with Armstrong).
Deatrich Wise was flagged for two penalties – a Horse-Collar tackle on Burrow and a defensive holding.
Percy Butler flashed a few times from his safety spot. He had 3 tackles, one for a loss and a pass defended. He also looks like he's added some weight this offseason.
In my opinion undrafted rookie Ale Kaho looked better than Kain Medrano.
Noah I did get flagged for a pass interference down inside the red zone, however he showed very well tackling, looking more like a linebacker than a defensive back.
Both Ben Sinnott and Luke McCaffrey did nothing special to separate themselves.
Will Harris had a nice pass defended in the endzone that prevented a touchdown.
I know it's just preseason, but Frankie Luvu needs to be more disciplined. He jumped offsides on a 4th and three to give the Bengals a first down. It was pretty clear Burrow wasn't going to snap the ball.
In his first game action as a Commander, Deebo looked explosive!

2025 NFL MVP Favorites

2025 NFL MVP Favorites originally appeared on The Spun. (Editor's note: This article is from The Spun by Athlon Sports' 2025 Football Betting Guide — the perfect preseason reference companion for new bettors or sharps alike. Order your copy today online, or pick one up at retail racks and newsstands nationwide.) In sports betting, there is a fine line between reckless and savvy longshot wagers. The NFL MVP award has crystallized this concept over the past decade, forcing oddsmakers to evolve and leaving foolish bettors throwing good money after bad bets. The saga began in 2018, when Patrick Mahomes took the league by storm in his first full season as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback. The overnight sensation won the MVP, after having odds in the neighborhood of 100/1 the previous summer. Sure enough, the very next season Lamar Jackson did the exact same thing for the Baltimore Ravens. He, too, began the year with 100/1 odds and ultimately hoisted the award. This outlier two-year stretch disrupted what had become a predictable trend of established quarterbacks. However, normalcy was promptly restored, as Aaron Rodgers then went back-to-back for his third and fourth MVPs in Green Bay. But some bettors are still hoping to catch lightning in a similar bottle this season. DraftKings head oddsmaker Johnny Avello has seen significant action on Justin Fields of the New York Jets (200/1) and Shedeur Sanders of the Cleveland Browns (150/1). 'This is all early money and speculation. It's guys with high odds and people taking a shot,' Avello said. 'They're only taking prices that will be long gone if guys start out well.' I would classify those as reckless wagers and 'dead money'. Now, I might have said the same thing in 2018 and 2019 about the eventual winners, but at least the industry has evolved since then, forming a tighter market. Oddsmakers have learned a great deal about creating odds for awards, which is very different from generating odds for actual games. 'I used to not like it but it's been really good because the odds have become much more sophisticated than they were in the beginning,' said SuperBook VP of Risk Management Ed Salmons, a veteran NFL oddsmaker. 'Just following it for the past eight years, it's easier to do now and it's a staple out there. It's definitely something we book every year, and for the most part, we do pretty well with it.' Essentially, oddsmakers have learned from their mistakes with Mahomes and Jackson. No longer will sportsbooks offer such long odds for a quarterback of a potentially high-powered offense. By comparison, QBs with longshot odds entering the 2025 season include Brock Purdy (25/1), Jared Goff (31/1), and Trevor Lawrence (40/1). The usual suspects are the betting favorites with Jackson leading the way with consensus +500 odds. Reigning MVP Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Mahomes are right behind at +600, while Jayden Daniels (+850) has entered the mix in just his second season. The shortest odds for any non-quarterback is Saquon Barkley with consensus 50/1 odds. He was a finalist last season with 2,005 rushing yards, the eighth-most in NFL history, but ultimately a quarterback won the MVP for the 12th straight year. Salmons firmly believes a quarterback will win MVP for the rest of time, given how pass-happy the NFL has become over the years. 'All leagues have gravitated toward the same stuff. A kicker (Mark Moseley) won in 1982. Can you imagine a kicker winning MVP right now?' 2025 Preseason NFL MVP Odds Here are the most recent NFL MVP odds from bet365 (editor's note: these odds are updated from odds that appear in the magazine): Lamar Jackson +500 Josh Allen +550 Joe Burrow +600 Patrick Mahomes +650 Jayden Daniels +850 Jalen Hurts +1800 Justin Herbert +1800 Jordan Love +2200 C.J. Stroud +2500 Baker Mayfield +2500 Brock Purdy +2800 Caleb Williams +3300 Jared Goff +3300 Dak Prescott +3500 Matthew Stafford +3500 Kyler Murray +4000 Trevor Lawrence +4500 Bo Nix +5000 Drake Maye +5000 Aaron Rodgers +6000 2025 NFL MVP Favorites first appeared on The Spun on Aug 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

No. 6 Notre Dame names Carr starting quarterback over Minchey

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman named second-year quarterback CJ Carr his starting quarterback Tuesday, ending the preseason competition with Kenny Minchey. The announcement was made on the official social media account of the Fighting Irish football program. Carr made one appearance for the Fighting Irish during last season's run to the national championship game but has not thrown a college pass. He played in the second half of a historic 66-7 rout at Purdue last season. He was a three-time all-state quarterback in Michigan and is the son of former Michigan football player Jason Carr and the grandson of former Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr. Minchey appeared in three games with the Irish in 2023 and completed both of his attempts for 12 yards. He also appeared in last year's Purdue game, completing his only pass of the season for 4 yards and rushing two times for 12 yards. He scored his first TD on a 7-yard run. Steve Angeli, Riley Leonard's top backup last season, also was in the battle during the spring. He replaced Leonard in the title game late in the first half against Penn State in the national semifinal and led the Irish to a score that helped them get back in sync. But he transferred to Syracuse after spring ball, turning the expected three-man battle into a two-man competition. Angeli was named Syracuse's starter earlier this week. Notre Dame opens the season in primetime Aug. 31 at No. 10 Miami.

Commanders sign veteran offensive tackle

The Washington Commanders added more offensive line depth on Tuesday, signing veteran offensive tackle George Fant. NFL insider Jordan Schultz had the news first, which the team later confirmed. Fant, 33, recently worked out for the Commanders. The Commanders fell to 0-2 in the preseason after Monday night's 31-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. While several of Washington's starters did not play, star quarterback Jayden Daniels was among those who played, and he quickly led the Commanders on a four-play, 74-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown from Daniels. Daniels did not play another snap. Washington's projected offensive tackles are Laremy Tunsil and rookie Josh Conerly Jr. Veteran Andrew Wylie, who is competing with Conerly, started at left tackle for Washington on Monday and played well. In addition to playing tackle, Wylie can also play both guard spots. Fant is a nine-year veteran who has played in 101 career games with 75 starts. Fant spent his first four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, then three with the New York Jets, one year with the Houston Texans, before returning to Seattle in 2024. He will likely compete with Trent Scott, Bobby Hart, Tyre Phillips and Foster Sarell for one spot. Fant would give Washington an experienced tackle should Tunsil, Conerly, or Wylie go down.
