‘Vance tried to contact me 3-4 times, I was busy': PM Modi reveals what US V-P ‘warned' during Op Sindoor
During his speech in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed claims made by United States President Donald Trump that he had brokered a ceasefire deal between India and Pakistan.
PM Modi said that US Vice-President JD Vance had tried to contact him 3-4 times on the night of May 9.
'US Vice President (JD Vance) tried to contact me 3-4 times, but I was busy in meetings with the armed forces,' Modi said.
The Prime Minister said that he returned Vance's call later. 'The US Vice President warned me of a big attack from Pakistan. I told him that if Pakistan attacks India, our attack would be much bigger,' Modi said.
''Hum goli ja jawab gole se denge (We will respond to bullets with missiles)',' the Prime Minister said.
PM Modi said that India's approach was non-escalatory and the country had targeted terror bases, which had been decided from the beginning. The Prime Minister added that Pakistan's DGMO had initiated the call to stop the fighting.
'Pakistan made a call...made a request in front of the DGMO, 'Bas karo... bahut maara (Stop it...you have hit enough), now we don't have the strength to take any more beating,' PM Modi said in the Lok Sabha.
Responding to questions on the international support to India during Operation Sindoor, Modi said that no world leader had stopped India from exercising its right to self-defence.
'Out of 193 countries, only 3 supported Pakistan. Whether it be Quad, BRICS, France, Germany, Russia, the whole world supported India,' Modi said. He further took a jibe at the Opposition, saying, 'While we received international support, it is unfortunate that my country's heroes did not get the backing of the Congress party.'

A crisis of trust: On the Election Commission of India
The credibility of an electoral system, or democracy in general, is dependent solely on it being seen as fair by all, particularly so by the loser. This is comparable to a judicial dispute or a sporting event on this count. If the losers think they lost only because the process was rigged against them, a crisis of trust develops. The serious charges being raised against the Election Commission of India (ECI) by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has to be seen in this context. He says that he has plans to disclose more information regarding discrepancies in the 2024 general election. One must wait for the details of those allegations before making any comments on their merits. The ECI has come under attack by politicians earlier too. Narendra Modi, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, had repeatedly questioned the impartiality of the ECI. Many of these charges against the ECI are rhetorical attempts by political parties or leaders to animate supporters. In Bihar, the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, has alleged his name did not exist on the draft electoral roll which is being revised by the ECI. As it turns out the Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number that he thought was his is different from the one in the ECI records, raising a new controversy. Politicians should be raising questions about the electoral process only when there are strong grounds for doing so. Trust in the electoral system is foundational to representative democracy. That said, the ECI's recent statements and actions, far from buttressing public trust and enhancing transparency in the process, raise more questions. Its efficiency and its neutrality are on test in the preparation of rolls, scheduling of elections, enforcement of the code of conduct, counting process, and the redress of complaints. The ECI stands charged on each of these counts. Other than protesting that the electronic voting machines (EVM) are beyond tampering, and that political parties should raise objections regarding rolls at the appropriate time, the ECI has refused to come clean on multiple issues. It has not been transparent about the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machine which is one of the three parts that make an Electronic Voting Machine. Unlike the other two parts — the Ballot Unit and the Control Unit — the VVPAT has software that is centrally installed and it is connected to the control unit. The random tallying of the VVPAT with the electronically cast votes is now an extremely arbitrary process. All political parties do not have the equal capacity to monitor the various stages of the electoral process. At any rate, the election process is not a matter of negotiation between parties and the ECI. Political parties have a role to play, but the real question is to ensure that the citizenry at large is reassured of the integrity of the electoral process. The ECI needs to correct its course to ensure that.

PM's Pariksha Pe Charcha enters Guinness World Record for most registrations in a month
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative has entered the Guinness World Record for "most people registered on a citizen engagement platform in one month", the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced on Monday. According to officials, 3.53 crore valid registrations were received during the eighth edition of the programme. Prime Minister Modi directly interacts with students, teachers, and parents as part of the Pariksha Pe Charcha (PPC) initiative, which aims to transform the examination season "into a festival of positivity, preparation, and purposeful learning", making exams a time for encouragement rather than stress. "Pariksha Pe Charcha has been redefined as a national approach to examinations by turning stress into a festival of learning. The eighth edition of PPC recorded a total of over 21 crore viewership across all media platforms in 2025," Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said at an event where the Guinness World Record certificate was formally presented. "The overwhelming participation in PPC 2025 is seen as a reflection of the country's collective commitment to holistic and inclusive education and alignment with the vision of a Viksit Bharat," he said. While addressing the occasion, Ashwini Vaishnaw called Pariksha Pe Charcha a unique initiative that brings together students, parents, and teachers to promote well-being and stress-free learning. PPC is an annual event in which Modi interacts with students appearing for board examinations. During the event, he also answers students' queries related to exam stress and other issues. The first edition of the prime minister's interactive programme with school and college students was held at the Talkatora Stadium in February 2018. Its seventh edition was held in a town hall format at the Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, engaging participants from across the country and overseas.

Telugu states top South India in court case backlog
Hyderabad: The Telugu states have recorded the highest rise in pending cases among South Indian states in district and subordinate courts, with a worrying 38% spike in pendency between 2020 and 2025. In Telangana, the number of pending cases grew from 6.91 lakh on Dec 31, 2020, to 9.54 lakh as of July 28, 2025. Similarly, Andhra Pradesh saw its backlog increase from 6.49 lakh to 8.99 lakh during the same period. Legal experts say the reasons behind the surge are multifold, from habitual adjournments to unfilled judicial vacancies and poor witness turnout. 'The biggest problem in both states is that instead of aiming for closure, parties or their advocates keep seeking adjournments. Even a simple case ends up dragging for years,' said Ch Sudheer Kumar, senior advocate from Hyderabad. 'Clients often hide information, especially in family court matters. Once one side makes an allegation, the other comes up with a counter without revealing the full picture. This delays the trial process further,' she said. According to figures presented in the Lok Sabha, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka reported relatively lower increases in pending cases, at 24.5% and 29.3%, respectively. Kerala, notably, reduced its pendency by 16.47% over the same period. Nationally, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana stand at eighth and ninth positions in terms of pendency growth. Though the absolute numbers are fewer, Manipur topped the list with a staggering 98% increase, followed by Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal.
