American Express plans ‘largest investment ever' in platinum credit card
'We are going to take these cards to a new level, not only in what they offer in travel, dining and lifestyle benefits, but also in how they look and feel,' Howard Grosfield, Amex's group president for US consumer services, said on Monday (Jun 16).
Amex raised its Platinum card annual fee to US$695 in July 2021, when it also added US$200 in annual hotel credits. Since then, the New York-based company has faced intensifying competition for premium credit card customers, including from JPMorgan's Sapphire Reserve card and Capital One Financial's Venture X Rewards card.
The Amex update will apply to both the US consumer and business Platinum cards, the company said. It did not provide more specifics on what changes are coming.
Card upgrades are critical for new-card acquisition and fees to fuel Amex's revenue growth targets, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Ben Elliott wrote in a note to clients.
'Consumers' appetite for ever-higher annual fees and complex, incentive-driven rewards structures could be tested if demand slows, but the formula has driven growth consistently for decades,' Elliott said.
Access to Amex's global lounges is one of the benefits linked to the Platinum card. A new Centurion lounge will be opening at Tokyo's Haneda Airport in the next year, Amex said, in addition to already-announced plans for new ones in Salt Lake City and Newark, New Jersey. BLOOMBERG

Passengers and crew members were stunned when their flight bound for Seoul touched down at Gimpo International Airport instead of Incheon International Airport as planned. AirAsia flight D7506 departed from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Aug 13 and was scheduled to reach Incheon at 7.50pm, but ended up at Gimpo at 8.08pm instead, reported The Korea Herald. The pilot announced that they had arrived in Incheon upon touchdown, but passengers noticed that they were in Gimpo after looking out the window while preparing to disembark from the plane. "Everyone panicked. It seemed the cabin crew didn't know we landed at Gimpo until passengers told them. One crew member even said she needed to call her parents, who were waiting for her at Incheon International Airport," Lee Mi-hyun, a passenger, told The Korea Herald. According to the Korea Airports Corporation, the diversion to Gimpo was caused by "turbulence" over Incheon Airport. The flight refuelled at Gimpo and departed for Incheon later at 10.17pm, eventually landing at 10.54pm. The airline crew did not manage the situation adequately during the two-hour delay, according to Lee. "They appeared just as confused as the passengers," she told The Korea Herald, adding that some passengers even contemplated getting off at Gimpo instead of waiting to return to Incheon. "No water was offered, and there was almost no food left on board, leaving passengers with children upset," she added. Another passenger, surnamed Kim, told Korea JoongAng Daily that passengers were told conflicting explanations over the situation, including turbulence and a fuel shortage. "Even when we finally got to Incheon, no apology was given," added the 38-year-old. 'A planned diversion': AirAsia The Malaysia-based low-cost carrier issued a statement on Thursday (Aug 14) following the incident, acknowledging the incident but saying that it was "a planned diversion". "The captain acted in full accordance with standard operating procedures, including keeping guests informed of the diversion initially in English," the airline said. Citing "air traffic congestion at Incheon due to adverse weather conditions" as the reason for the diversion, the airline also said that the miscommunication between cabin crew was rectified promptly. Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, said that it was an "unforeseen situation" and that the diversion was made "in the interest of safety". "We will also review our internal announcements and onboard information-sharing processes to ensure greater clarity in such situations," he said, thanking passengers for their understanding. Buffett buys US$1.6 billion UnitedHealth stake, sells T-Mobile
[NEW YORK] Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway bought shares of UnitedHealth Group in the second quarter, sending the health insurer's stock soaring in post-market trading. The chief executive officer of the Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate acquired five million shares in UnitedHealth, granting Berkshire a stake worth US$1.6 billion, according to a filing on Thursday (Aug 14). Berkshire also sold its US$1 billion stake in T-Mobile US during the period, exiting the telecommunications operator. Buffett's investment in UnitedHealth comes as the health company faces multiple crises. Last year, a UnitedHealth executive, Brian Thompson, was shot to death in Manhattan. UnitedHealth, along with other US health insurers, has also faced unexpected increases in medical costs. In April, it reported earnings below Wall Street estimates for the first time in more than a decade, sending the stock price plummeting. It has since replaced its CEO and announced plans to replace its chief financial officer. The disclosure of Berkshire's UnitedHealth stake pushed the insurer's shares up as much as 9.6 per cent in post-market trading on Thursday. Apple, BOA trim Buffett also sold 20 million shares of Apple during the period, after slashing his holding in the iPhone manufacturer last year. Berkshire's Apple stake remains its largest equity stake by market value, despite it falling by about US$9.2 billion in the three months ended Jun 30. Berkshire also renewed its effort to trim its holding in Bank of America (BOA), selling 26 million shares and bringing its stake down to about 8 per cent at the end of June. Buffett started whittling down the bank investment last year, without providing any explanation for the move. One of its equity bets, a stake in consumer foods giant Kraft Heinz, has been a headache for Buffett's company. The conglomerate took a US$3.8 billion impairment charge on its investment earlier this year, and kept its holding unchanged in the second quarter. Hedge funds shift bets to double down on Big Tech amid AI boom
NEW YORK :Wall Street's largest hedge funds, Bridgewater Associates, Tiger Global Management and Discovery Capital, increased their exposure to Big Tech in the second quarter amid a generational boom in the growth of artificial intelligence. During the June quarter, hedge funds cut their exposure to laggards in industries like aerospace and defense, and consumer and retail, as part of a broader move back to momentum investing. It marks a big shift from earlier this year when bets on Big Tech had soured for top money managers due to tariff-fueled volatility in financial markets, with investor concerns around rising inflation and fears of a bubble in AI triggering a sell-off in "Magnificent Seven" stocks. Since then, tech stocks have staged a big comeback. The S&P 500 is up 10 per cent so far this year, buoyed largely by the largest tech companies, which account for nearly a third of the combined market cap of companies on the index. Outside technology, some hedge funds, such as Lone Pine and Discovery, also bet on UnitedHealth Group. Berkshire Hathaway and Michael Burry's Scion Asset Management also unveiled bets on the insurer, while Soros Fund Management boosted an existing position. Shares in UnitedHealth are down 46 per cent this year, as the company faces rising costs, a U.S. Department of Justice probe, a cyberattack and the shooting of former top executive Brian Thompson last December. The fund's positions were revealed in quarterly securities filings known as 13Fs. While backward-looking, these filings typically reveal what funds owned on the last day of the quarter and are one of the few ways hedge funds and other institutional investors have to declare their positions. Below are the details of the changes in the holdings of the top hedge funds: BRIDGEWATER ASSOCIATES Bridgewater Associates added more shares in Nvidia, Alphabet and Microsoft in the second quarter. The macro hedge fund founded by Ray Dalio more than doubled its bets in Nvidia. It ended June with 7.23 million shares in the chipmaker, or 154.5 per cent more than it had at the end of March. Nvidia was Bridgewater's biggest bet in a single stock, totaling $1.14 billion. Its holdings in Alphabet and Microsoft went up by 84.1 per cent and 111.9 per cent, respectively, amounting to $987 million and $853 million. Other AI-related stocks added were Broadcom (+102.7 per cent), to 317.8 million shares, or $317 million, and Palo Alto Networks (+117 per cent), to 313.8 million, or $314 million. DISCOVERY CAPITAL Discovery Capital, whose founder Rob Citrone has recently been bullish on Mexico's America Movil due to its exposure to Latin America, doubled its stake in the wireless provider during the second quarter. For the quarter ended June 30, the fund amassed another 2.65 million shares, valuing its current holding in America Movil at about $95 million. Citrone's hedge fund, which generated a 52 per cent windfall on its investments last year, has increased its exposure to Latin America as part of a strategy to diversify from U.S. holdings. During the quarter, Discovery increased its holdings in Big Tech, as it more than doubled its stake in Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, while also betting on booming demand for AI as it took a new position in Nvidia-backed cloud provider CoreWeave. The hedge fund also increased its position in UnitedHealth by 13 per cent. TIGER GLOBAL MANAGEMENT Tiger Global Management bought more stocks in some Magnificent Seven companies in the second quarter, including Alphabet, Nvidia, Microsoft and Meta, its 13Fs showed. Chase Coleman's hedge fund added roughly 4 million shares of Amazon and ended June with roughly 10 million shares, worth $2.34 billion. The fund also increased its bets in smaller AI-players. It added over 800,000 shares in chip-making equipment supplier Lam Research Corp, ending June with 5.26 million shares, valued at $512 million. COATUE MANAGEMENT Many changes in Philippe Laffont's Coatue Management portfolio were also around AI-related stocks. It unveiled new positions in both Arm Holdings and Oracle, adding stakes worth roughly $750 million and $843 million, respectively. Both companies have boosted AI-related business initiatives. Coatue also increased its holdings in Nvidia-backed CoreWeave, adding 3.39 million shares in the second quarter, with its stake in the company worth $2.9 billion.
