Jagdeep Dhankhar's Eventful Day In Parliament Before He Resigned As Vice President

NDTV2 days ago
New Delhi:
In a sudden move, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening to "prioritise health". He has sent his letter to President Droupadi Murmu, saying he is stepping down with immediate effect.
"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately," his letter read.
His abrupt move followed an eventful day in the Rajya Sabha - the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament - under his chairmanship. An opposition-sponsored notice for a motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma over burnt wads of cash found at his residence was submitted to him, and he mentioned it in the House and asked the secretary general to take further necessary steps. The development came even as the ruling alliance had sponsored a similar notice in the Lok Sabha and taken the opposition on board.
The 74-year-old leader also administered the oath to the newly elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha. He also presided over the business advisory committee meeting.
Jagdeep Dhankhar was also scheduled to visit Jaipur on Wednesday in his capacity as the Vice President, as per a government statement issued at 3.53 pm on Monday.
"The Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, will be on a one-day visit to Jaipur, Rajasthan on July 23, 2025. During his visit, the Vice-President will interact with the newly elected committee members of Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI) Rajasthan at Rambagh Palace, Jaipur," the release said.
The Congress has expressed surprise at his resignation, saying it is "totally unexpected" and there is "far more to it than meets the eye".
In his resignation letter, he said that he was deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights he gained as Vice President.
"It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India's remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation's history has been a true honour," he said. Mr Dhankhar had recently undergone angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
Earlier this month, Mr Dhankhar had said he would retire at the "right time".
"I will retire at the right time, August 2027, subject to divine intervention," he said in a lighter vein while addressing an event at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.
Mr Dhankhar's five-year term as the 14th Vice President was to end on August 10, 2027.
Before being elected as the Vice President after being fielded by the BJP-led NDA, he served as the governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022.
Mr Dhankhar is the third Vice President of India after VV Giri and R Venkataraman to resign during his tenure. However, Giri and Venkataraman had resigned from the post of vice president to contest the presidential election.
As per the rules, elections have to be held within the next six months to fill the post of Vice President. However, the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman can take over the House proceedings till the time a new Vice President is elected.

Adbhut! Avishwasniya!: Delhis Infamous Minto Bridge Underpass Stays Clear Amidst Heavy Rains, X Cant Handle It

In a unique scene that took Delhiites by surprise and social media into tizzy, the infamous waterlogged Minto Bridge underpass witnessed free flowing traffic during Wednesday morning, even as heavy rain pounded the national capital. The 90-year-old railway underbridge has long been synonymous with torrential waterlogging during monsoon months, which has continued since India's independence. The Minto Bridge, placed strategically where Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Marg meets Swami Vivekananda Marg, is an integral artery that connects Connaught Place, New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi, and Darya Ganj. Its vulnerability to flooding has been a commuters' nightmare for long. #WATCH | Delhi: Latest visuals from Minto Bridge; traffic running smoothly. The national capital received heavy rainfall this morning. — ANI (@ANI) July 23, 2025 But a video uploaded by news agency ANI on Wednesday morning presented a very different picture: cars plying effortlessly under the underpass with no signs of waterlogging in sight. "Latest visuals from Minto Bridge; traffic flowing smoothly. The national capital was lashed with heavy rain this morning," read the caption accompanying the video. The sudden turn of events soon attracted responses on all social media networks, with most calling it a "miracle at Minto Bridge." Amit Malviya of BJP attributed the turnaround to the new Delhi BJP government under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. "Even after heavy rain, vehicles passed smoothly over Minto Bridge, which used to get flooded with even a drizzle. That's the difference Delhi is seeing in just a few months under the BJP government!" Malviya tweeted. X user Monica Jasuja shared the same sentiment, saying in amazement, "Breaking: Minto Bridge navigates Delhi rains without becoming a swimming pool! Adbhut! Avishwasniya! Akalpaniya! (Amazing! Unbelievable! Unimaginable!)". Breaking: Minto Bridge survives Delhi rains without turning into a swimming pool! Adbhut! Avishwasniya! Akalpaniya! 90 years of "underwater bridge experience" finally ends. Turns out all it needed was some actual drain cleaning, not underwater engineering! New government… — Monica Jasuja (@jasuja) July 23, 2025 While some rejoiced at the miracle, others argued over whether that kind of success should be held newsworthy. "Anything functioning normally in this country is such an anomaly that it warrants a celebration," one X user wrote. Another said, "One of the busiest roads in the most significant borough of the capital country not waterlogged because of rain is news in this country." Alternatively, other users provided compliments for the efforts of the present government. "You know the govt has done a great job when Minto bridge has no rain water surrounded with less traffic. Mass respect and W for Rekha Gupta," wrote another user. Smita Barooah, considering the difficulty, wrote, "The Delhi government has been working on cleaning the drains on a war footing.". In spite of the gigantic pendency & since they've been in power for less than 6 months, much has been accomplished. Of course much more is yet to be done. Minto Bridge remaining open during the monsoons is a sign of good progress. The Minto Bridge has been an evergreen problem for civic officials in the past, with attempts over decades to address its waterlogging problems. The Public Works Department (PWD) has taken numerous steps over the years, ranging from the installation of pumps to the laying of new drainage lines. This latest example of the underpass staying dry even as heavy rains lashed the city indicates that all efforts made recently may be paying off, providing a ray of hope for Delhi's monsoons.

Delhi court grants custody parole to MP Engineer Rashid to attend Parliament

A Delhi court on Tuesday granted custody parole to jailed Lok Sabha MP Engineer Rashid from July 24 to August 4 to attend the Monsoon Session of Parliament. On the other hand, his interim bail plea was rejected. Rashid had argued in court that he should either be granted interim bail or permission to attend Parliament in custody, without payment of travel costs, as he was seeking to attend Parliament as his public duty and not for personal work. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh, however, imposed travel costs on him. Rashid's lawyers are likely to challenge the order in Delhi High Court. Rashid had defeated National Conference leader Omar Abdullah in Baramulla by 2 lakh plus votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He has been lodged in Tihar jail since 2019 in an eight-year-old terror funding case. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Rashid on August 9, 2019, four days after the abrogation of Article 370 and the removal of Jammu and Kashmir's special status. The NIA's case is that Rashid used various public platforms to 'propagate the ideology of separatism and secessionism', and was closely associated with various terrorist organisations. The agency had also alleged that he wanted to 'legitimise' the United Jihad Council (UJC), a platform of anti-India militant groups in J-K. Charges were framed against Rashid in March 2022 under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 121 (waging war against the government), and 124A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code and for offences relating to terrorist acts and terror funding under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). However, Rashid has maintained that the NIA has only produced an old Facebook post and statements of two protected witnesses to implicate him. He has also argued that he has already been discharged under sections 20, 38, and 39 of the UAPA, which pertain to being part of a terrorist organisation and lending support to it.
