Western Australian curriculum to launch in 3 Karnataka schools in July
Bengaluru: For decades, international curriculum in India has been synonymous with IB (International Baccalaureate, originally developed in Switzerland) and IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education from the UK).
However, from 2025-26, one more international board will be added — WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education).
This new board from Western Australia is emerging as a strong competitor to existing international boards, with fees said to be up to 65% cheaper. The Australian authorities confirmed that the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has officially granted 'foreign board' equivalence to WACE.
This means they can function as a board in India. While WACE is looking to onboard 100 schools in India over the next three years, the rollout will be gradual up to class 12.
The first few schools in India will introduce the curriculum to kindergarten students in July. Three are in Karnataka -- two in Bengaluru and one in Bidar.
About 30 teachers are attending training in Bengaluru on teaching pedagogy and classroom delivery.
They will be trained for 150 hours over two years, said Angelique Smith, principal consultant, School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA), Govt of Western Australia.
The curriculum is a no-textbook model and has lesson plans and worksheets curated for different regions.
Syed Sultan Ahmed, chairman of TAISI and advisor to WACE India on International Curriculum Integration, said: "The Australian govt intends to make the quality of education affordable... If IB schools, which are at the top (cost-wise), would be considered a 100%, Cambridge (IGCSE) would be 50% and WACE 35%. Students in the (WACE recognised) school get an Australian student identification number. That means they are recognised as students of Australia as well.

Paris: French oil and gas giant TotalEnergies goes on trial in Paris on Thursday over allegations of misleading climate claims, an unprecedented "greenwashing" case against a fossil fuel firm in France. The civil case stems from a March 2022 lawsuit by three environmental groups accusing the French energy giant of "misleading commercial practices" for saying it could reach carbon neutrality while continuing oil and gas production. Starting in May 2021, TotalEnergies advertised its goal of "carbon neutrality by 2050" and touted gas as "the fossil fuel with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions". Cagnat said the NGOs want the court to send a "strong signal" to fossil fuel companies by ordering "an immediate stop, under penalty, of the misleading commercial practices". TotalEnergies disputes the charges, insisting the messages are part of its institutional communication, regulated by financial authorities -- not consumer law. It argues no consumer organisation is party to the case, and that the NGOs are misusing consumer protection rules to challenge its corporate strategy. Environmental groups in recent years have turned to the courts to establish case law on companies misleading consumers by appearing more eco-friendly than they are. In Europe, courts ruled against Dutch airline KLM in 2024 and Germany's Lufthansa in March over misleading consumers about their efforts to reduce the environmental impact of flying. In Spain, utility Iberdrola failed to secure a conviction against Spanish oil and gas company Repsol over similar allegations of "false" environmental claims. A greenwashing case against Australian oil and gas producer Santos, challenging its claim to be a "clean fuels" company, has been ongoing since 2021. Based on a European Union directive targeting unfair commercial practices, the TotalEnergies lawsuit is the first time a French court has heard such a case against a fossil fuel company. The NGOs said the Paris court will rule, for the first time in the world, on the legality of ads presenting gas as essential to the energy transition. Climate experts say methane leaks from the gas industry have a powerful warming effect on the atmosphere. TotalEnergies maintains it has not engaged in misleading commercial practices. The company says it plans to show that its messages "about its name change, strategy and role in the energy transition are reliable and based on objective, verifiable data".

2-Foot-Long Monitor Lizard Emerges From Toilet In Rajasthan
A two-foot-long Goyra, commonly referred to as the Indian monitor lizard, invaded a home in the Kishangarh town of Ajmer district, Rajasthan, causing a massive stir in the neighbourhood. The massive lizard emerged from a toilet pot in Garvit Kumawat's home in the Shivlok Colony. The family members had heard an odd sound coming from the other side of the toilet. They were left shocked when they peered inside. They were in a panic for almost 45 minutes after noticing the reptile. A sanitation worker was then called, and after 10 minutes of arduous labour, the lizard was rescued and taken to a secure location. The reptile is believed to have entered the toilet from the sewer. After the incident, the locals have called on the local civic officials to conduct a comprehensive study of the sewer system. The term "Goyra" describes the Bengal monitor, another name for the common Indian monitor lizard. It is also known as "goh" in Punjab and Bihar, "guishaap" or "goshaap" in West Bengal, and "bis-cobra" in the western regions of India. This huge, unusual-looking lizard is known for its swimming and tree-climbing skills. Goyra has scales on its body and is usually large. Its snake-like tongue leads people to believe it is dangerous, but it is not toxic. It hunts birds, insects, and small animals. An antibiotic and a tetanus vaccine are given if Goyra bites. Stories of reptiles, particularly snakes and lizards, emerging from the toilet pot have been reported in the past as well. In 2023, an Australian family was shocked to witness a four-foot long snake inside their toilet. Luckily, the snake was a common tree snake, which is not toxic and poses no threat to humans. In 2022, a couple in Thailand noticed a monitor lizard coming out of the toilet seat. In the video, which has now been deleted, a man was seen noticing something odd while using the restroom. He then filmed the entire event. First, a big monitor lizard was observed protruding its tongue from inside the toilet seat. Then, it emerged slowly and stood in front of everyone.
