Disguised Unemployment in Blockchain? Data Shows Only 12% of Ethereum, 25% of Solana Protocols Have Revenue

Yahoo23-07-2025
Have you heard of disguised unemployment? It refers to a situation where a portion of the workforce appears to be employed, but isn't contributing to the economy's output. Consider the massive capital expenditure loss from ghost cities, which represent unoccupied infrastructure.
Something similar can be said for the top smart contract blockchains, which hosts hundreds of decentralized protocols. Of these, only a minority are generating revenue, while the rest produce no yield, loosely representing ghost digital cities and a form of disguised unemployment.
According to DeFiLlama, Ethereum is the world's largest smart contract blockchain, hosting 1,271 protocols. Yet over the past 30 days, a staggering 88%, or 1,121 projects in total, generated no revenue.
Ethereum's rival, Solana, has a much smaller ecosystem, hosting 264 protocols, of which 75% have not generated revenue in the past few days.
In other words, a large number of protocols on the two chains haven't captured any value lately, much like the workforce that draws a salary but does not contribute to the output, or ghost towns that are not being utilized to generate a meaningful economic return.
Key AI insights
Inactive projects are not necessarily a direct burden on the network's processing power in the same way that a congested network is, but they do pose an indirect burden in the following ways:
Storage Burden
Every smart contract, active or not, is stored on the blockchain forever. This immutable data adds to the size of the blockchain, and all nodes in the network must store and maintain this history. As the total number of contracts grows, so do the storage and bandwidth requirements for running a node. While the effect of a single inactive contract is minimal, a "ghost town" of thousands of them adds up over time, increasing the network's long-term operational costs.
Security and Vulnerability Risks
The existence of a vast number of inactive or abandoned contracts creates a larger attack surface. A smart contract, even if it's no longer used, can contain a vulnerability that, if exploited, could have unforeseen consequences for other parts of the ecosystem or funds locked within it. This introduces a layer of systemic risk to the network that must be continually monitored by security researchers and auditors.
Economic Inefficiency
This is where the "disguised unemployment" analogy is most apt. While these projects aren't causing congestion, they represent a collective failure of capital and developer time to create a productive asset on the network. The funds, time, and effort spent to deploy these projects are effectively locked in a non-productive state, which is a drag on the overall efficiency of the ecosystem.
Just as a physical ghost city represents a massive investment of capital and labour that yields no economic return, the multitude of non-revenue-generating protocols on blockchains represents wasted developer effort and capital that does not contribute to the network's productivity.
Hindrance to User Experience
A large number of inactive projects can make it difficult for new users to find and trust legitimate, active protocols. Sifting through a sea of defunct or failed projects can be confusing and might detract from the overall user experience.Sign in to access your portfolio

SEC Is Now All In On Crypto. What's Next?

Crypto funds are about to become a whole lot more regulated — or deregulated, depending on who you ask. After initial delays, the SEC has approved in-kind redemptions for spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. The decision is the first pro-crypto policy decision by Paul Atkins, the SEC chair confirmed earlier this year who is expected to help realize crypto evangelists' digital currency dreams. The move also is the first major indication that the crypto industry — whose super PACs donated tens of millions to President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign — is getting what it expected. Invest in Gold American Hartford Gold: #1 Precious Metals Dealer in the Nation Priority Gold: Up to $15k in Free Silver + Zero Account Fees on Qualifying Purchase Thor Metals Group: Best Overall Gold IRA The decision marked 'the biggest day for crypto in the history of the space,' said financial consultant Tyrone Ross Jr. 'This administration, whether it's custody, whether it's on-chain, whether it's ETFs … they're making sure that crypto thrives in America.' READ ALSO: Rich Investors Eschew Financial Advice, Trade ETFs Frequently and Two Income ETFs Are Goldman's Fastest Sellers Will That Be Cash or Crypto? In-kind redemptions let investors create and redeem shares of spot crypto ETFs without having to use cash — meaning authorized participants, the people with the power to change the number of ETF shares on the market, can now add or remove assets from a fund using Bitcoin or Ethereum. In a statement on the approval, Atkins said the decision is only the first step toward building 'a rational regulatory framework for crypto.' But how much of these changes can be attributed to the Trump administration? 'One hundred percent,' said Ross. 'They are hell-bent on America becoming the main hub for crypto in the world.' Other measures approved by the agency were: Advancing a 'merit-neutral' approach to crypto-based products, including applications for spot crypto ETFs. Allowing FLEX options on shares of certain Bitcoin ETFs that let investors customize things like expiration date and strike price. The SEC's likely next move is specifying which coins are and aren't securities, Ross said. 'That's the big one that everyone is still waiting for,' he said. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is also likely to eventually update its guidance on what it will oversee, he added. Keeping Options Open. In-kind redemption approvals took place alongside another policy change to increase positions limits for options trading on BlackRock's spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, IBIT — the biggest crypto ETF on the market — from 25,000 to 250,000 contracts. BlackRock has been among the most prominent issuers pushing for deregulation, having filed for in-kind redemptions back in January. 'It's huge for the individual investor. It's huge for BlackRock,' Ross said. 'It's huge for the entire space.' This post first appeared on The Daily Upside. Why Ethereum Retail Investors Remain 'Sidelined'—Even as Institutions Buy Billions

Ethereum's strong performance in the second quarter is a testament to rising institutional demand, according to analysts. But futures data shows a divergence as retail investors appear to be on the sidelines. The primary drivers of this divide are a lack of capital, unequal access to information, and a difference in mindset between the two cohorts, according to experts who spoke to Decrypt on Tuesday. At the time of writing, Ethereum is overcoming macro headwinds, undoing last week's losses with a 7.75% jump from Sunday's low, according to CoinGecko. ETH is currently changing hands for $3,661.11 after having gained 3% in the past day. The total net assets held within U.S. spot Ethereum exchange traded funds, or ETFs, reached a record high of $21.52 billion on July 31. Experts have said it's a clear sign of institutional appetite. "Institutional clients turn to regulated digital asset platforms to hedge macro risk," Emma Shi, Head of HashKey OTC, told Decrypt. The top two cryptos serve as 'alternative stores of value and potential hedges" and are increasingly being considered in this context. This trend is a result of the activity of corporate treasuries like Bitminer (BMNR), which emerged as the world's largest holder of Ethereum, currently possessing a staggering 833,000 ETH, worth $3 billion. Tom Lee's BitMine Builds $3 Billion Ethereum Stash, Now Third Largest Public Crypto Treasury "We have separated ourselves among crypto treasury peers by both the velocity of raising crypto NAV per share and by the high liquidity of our stock," BitMine's Chairman Tom Lee said in a statement yesterday. Lookonchain data provides an even more granular view of recent Ethereum buying, showing 14 fresh wallets have amassed 856,554 ETH since July 9. Three of these wallets scooped 63,837 ETH, worth $236 million, through over-the-counter (OTC) desks at FalconX and Galaxy Digital. Retail and Institutional Divergence Contrasting this robust institutional demand is data from crypto intelligence platform Kiyotaka that indicates a more hesitant approach from retail investors. The long/short ratio held by ETH futures traders has been on a downtrend since April. It suggests a pattern of underallocation and a general "sidelined" posture, the crypto analytics platform noted on X. Large investors 'benefit from scale' and have access to 'sophisticated DeFi strategies,' which are often 'out of reach or inefficient for smaller holders,' Naman, Co-Founder & CEO of NodeOps, told Decrypt, highlighting the aforementioned divergence. Echoing Naman's sentiment, Shi at HashKey outlined that the difference in 'mindset' is what sets retail and institutions apart. While retail participants have a 'defensive' mindset and focus on 'recovering capital before considering new investments,' large players treat dips as a 'discount' and view them as buying opportunities. Unlike retail traders who are generally characterized by their short-term holding windows, sophisticated holders think long-term, Shi said. Digital asset treasuries accumulating Ethereum highlights the importance of "robust risk management frameworks" and a focus on "long-term conviction in Ethereum's ecosystem," she added. Retail traders are also hampered by lack of low interest rates, fewer arbitrage opportunities, and the kind of tradeable information common in asset manager circles, Shi said.

Tom Lee's BitMine Builds $3 Billion Ethereum Stash, Now Third Largest Public Crypto Treasury

Bitcoin miner BitMine Immersion now has over $3 billion in Ethereum as the company races to stack the second biggest digital coin. The Peter Thiel-backed company now holds 833,137 ETH it bought at an average price of $3,491.86 per coin—making it the largest corporate ETH treasury, it said in a Monday statement. It added that it now ranks as the third largest public crypto treasury in the world, behind only software company Strategy and miner Mara Blockchain, which both hold Bitcoin. Twenty One's $4 billion Bitcoin stash would be good for third on the list of largest public treasuries, but the company's shares do yet trade publicly. BitMine did not respond to Decrypt's request for comment. The Nasdaq-listed firm said in a press release that it has reached its current ETH holdings in just 35 days. "We have separated ourselves among crypto treasury peers by both the velocity of raising crypto NAV per share and by the high liquidity of our stock," BitMine's Chairman Tom Lee said in a statement. Tom Lee of Fundstrat Global Advisors is the brains behind BitMine's ETH stacking strategy. The Wall Street bigwig has long been bullish on Bitcoin but in June said that Ethereum was making a comeback and could be the "next Bitcoin" as institutional investors express interest in the digital coin and its network. Ethereum was recently trading at nearly $3,679 per coin, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko, after jumping 5% over a 24-hour period. The coin is still 24% below its all-time high of $4,878 that it hit in 2021. Still, the coin has rallied by over 46% over a 30-day period as American investors have quickly piled into ETH exchange-traded funds. The vehicles have generated more than $9.5 billion in net inflows since their debut last year. Ethereum treasuries like BitMine are following a model pioneered by Strategy—formerly MicroStrategy—which shifted from software development to buying Bitcoin in 2020. Strategy now holds 628,791 BTC worth over $72 billion. Other Nasdaq-listed companies have followed suit—albeit mostly smaller, lesser-known entities—by buying not only Bitcoin and Ethereum but also altcoins like Solana, XRP, and Toncoin. These companies have achieved at least short-term stock price gains, sometimes with massive spikes. New York Stock Exchange-listed BitMine's (BMNR) stock has rallied over 650% since the end of June. It was recently trading at nearly $32 per share, up by nearly 1% on Monday.
