Google recruits Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder, and several AI researchers for $2.4B investment after OpenAI's $3B deal falls apart

Time of India3 days ago
Google has acquired top AI coding talent from Windsurf, including CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen, for its DeepMind division in a $2.4 billion deal. This move comes after OpenAI's acquisition attempt failed due to Microsoft's IP access demands. Google gains non-exclusive licensing rights to Windsurf's AI coding technology, strengthening its position in the competitive AI-powered software development market.

Microsoft tensions derail OpenAI's windsurf purchase
OpenAI's planned acquisition unraveled when Microsoft refused to grant an exception that would prevent the tech giant from accessing Windsurf's intellectual property. Under Microsoft's existing agreement with OpenAI, the software company is entitled to access OpenAI's technology, including any acquired assets.
Windsurf leaders were concerned about sharing their proprietary AI coding technology with Microsoft, which competes directly in the space with its Copilot product. The breakdown in negotiations opened the door for Google to swoop in with a more straightforward offer from CEO Sundar Pichai and DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis.
Tech giants battle for AI coding supremacy
The deal is the latest of "acquihire" strategy employed by major companies to attract top AI talent without triggering regulatory scrutiny. Similar arrangements have seen Microsoft hire Inflection AI founders, Amazon recruit Adept AI executives, and Meta take a 49% stake in Scale AI.
Windsurf, founded in 2021 as Exafunction Inc., has emerged as one of the hottest AI coding startups, reaching approximately $100 million in annual recurring revenue by April 2025. The company had raised over $200 million from investors including Kleiner Perkins and Greenoaks Capital Partners.
The hiring of Mohan, Chen, and other Windsurf researchers will boost Google's efforts to compete with rivals like Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex in the rapidly growing AI-powered software development market.

Nvidia wins OK to resume sales of AI chip to China after CEO meets Trump

Nvidia said it has received assurances from the Trump administration that it can sell its H20 artificial-intelligence chip in China, days after Chief Executive Jensen Huang met President Trump. The turnabout comes after the Commerce Department restricted sales of the chip in April, costing Nvidia billions of dollars. It is welcome news for the $4 trillion chip company and Huang, who is visiting Beijing this week. The administration said Nvidia would be allowed to sell the H20 chip after licenses are granted by the Commerce Department, according to the company. Nvidia said it would begin deliveries soon. In addition, it said it has developed a new chip with lower performance that meets all U.S. export criteria so it can be shipped to China. The approval could be seen as a gesture of good faith by the U.S. in its trade talks with China. Access to chips and advanced technology has been a main priority for Chinese negotiators. The license approvals will be some of the only licenses being granted by the Trump administration, which is restricting exports of AI chips and other products to protect national security. Huang plans to meet top Chinese officials during his stay in Beijing, people familiar with the matter said. Huang met Trump last week, attempting to persuade the president that his company should be allowed to continue to do business with China and tap AI talent there, according to people familiar with the meeting. Huang told Trump that Nvidia should be allowed to sell its technology freely to most parts of the world so American companies can dominate AI instead of Chinese companies, the people said. The CEO also discussed similar topics with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, they said. The globe-trotting Huang has become one of the world's most recognizable executives because of AI's growing prominence in the global economy. Nvidia chips are vital for cutting-edge data centers that train AI models and operate AI applications. Few companies are caught in the U.S.-China trade war as much as Nvidia, pushing Huang to spend more time making his case to politicians. Write to Raffaele Huang at and Amrith Ramkumar at

Microsoft to Stop New Office Features for Windows 10 Users by 2026

In a move that could push millions towards upgrading, Microsoft has confirmed it will stop rolling out new features for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 starting August 2026. The company quietly disclosed this shift, which means that if you want the latest Microsoft 365 improvements, you'll need to be on Windows 11. 'Microsoft 365 Personal and Family users will stop getting new features on Windows 10 in August 2026, alongside Current Channel users on the business side.' After that, monthly enterprise channel users will lose access to new Office features on October 13, 2026, with semi-annual enterprise channel users following on January 12, 2027. Earlier this year, Microsoft had to backtrack on plans to end security updates for Office apps on Windows 10 but did not reveal then that new features would be phased out. Security patches for Office on Windows 10 will continue until October 10, 2028, while Windows 10 itself reaches end-of-life on October 14, 2025. The move is part of Microsoft's broader effort to transition users to Windows 11. Despite these efforts, millions still rely on Windows 10, even as Windows 11 has finally surpassed it as the most used desktop operating system. To soften the blow, Microsoft is offering an extra year of security updates for free, provided users enable Windows Backup. But for those who want the newest tools and improvements, upgrading to Windows 11 will soon be the only option.
