As helpful as it would be to step out of work while still paid to recover, that isn't an option many of us have on the table. The experts say you can still recover from burnout while still at work, but it's going to require some conscious planning, and knowing where your limits are. The emotional toll of doing this when running on empty is certainly there, but we've gone to experts for practical solutions for dealing with your workload.
Prioritise tasks at work
Laura Kingston, founder of Leap Career Coaching, says prioritising tasks is the most vital first step. It might feel impossible in the moment, so take it slow and allow yourself a breather while figuring this out. 'Focus on what must be done that day only. Taking it one day at a time reduces overwhelm. There are different ways to do this, such as utilising the Eisenhower Matrix which helps you group tasks into levels of urgency and importance.' You can RAG (Red, Amber, Green) status your work, deal with the Reds only and park the Ambers and Greens until you have more energy and headspace for them, Kingston explains. 'Another great way to gain clarity on what must be done is via Stakeholder Mapping: Who are your key stakeholders? What workload is a priority to keep them happy? Who can you delegate work to? What work can you deprioritise? How can your team and manager support you? What meetings are you attending where you don't really need to be present?'
Once you're clear on these things, do what needs to be done whilst still taking breaks, Kingston adds. Neglecting them isn't going to help you recover, and it won't do anyone else around you a favour by skipping lunch. This strategy might be hard to put into place if you always do the opposite, but you deserve to rest, too.
Set boundaries at work
While blasting through as much work as you can might feel like the right fix, if you're doing it at the expense of your wellbeing, the burnout isn't going to lift any time soon. Zara Easton, LinkedIn career expert, advises you to focus on yourself personally to beat the uphill battle of burnout. 'The key is to implement consistent, protective practices that prioritise your wellbeing,' Easton says. 'Start by setting firm boundaries around your work hours and digital availability — truly disconnecting during your off-time is non-negotiable. Ensure you are taking all your breaks, even short ones, to mentally reset.' Again, this might feel unnatural if you aren't in the habit of taking breaks, so try to remind yourself that you've earned them.
Easton believes investing in your mental and physical health is the 'smartest career move' you can make. 'While these practices won't resolve deep-seated issues overnight, they are vital for conserving your energy, fostering small wins, and creating the necessary space for recovery within your existing environment,' she says. Kingston adds that getting outside on your lunch break with a walk with your favourite music plugged in isn't to be underestimated.
Ask for extra support from your manager
We all need an extra helping hand at some point down the road. We're working for longer than ever before, with retirement ages being pushed back what feels like constantly. It's only natural that at points in our career journeys more support will be needed.
Kingston says it's important to chat about expectations with your manager and see if anything can be taken off your plate. It's good to be honest, but solution focused, she advises. She says it's worth pondering: Can you reduce your hours? Start work later? Work compressed hours to take off Fridays? Also find out if your company provides therapy, coaching or any other type of employee assistance.
'If burnout is impacting your way of life, you need to seriously consider your options and look after yourself,' Kingston says. 'Are you still feeling exhausted after a rest? This is a sign that you may need some time off. Your mental, emotional, and physical health should be your top priority. The earlier you reach out for support and give yourself space to recover, the sooner you'll start to feel better. Speak to your doctor who can offer you advice, there are also free helplines you can call for mental health support.'
It might also be a case of simply not being in the right job, whether it's the work itself or the company culture. In which case, set 'mini goals' while searching for a new role to keep the energy required for this low but consistent. None of this stuff is easy, but you can do it.

Trump sanctions Brazilians, ex-PAHO officials over Cuban medical mission in Brazil
The Trump administration is imposing visa restrictions and revoking the visas of several Brazilian government officials, former Pan American Health Organization officials and their family members for 'their complicity with the Cuban regime's labor export scheme in the Mais Médicos program,' the State Department said Wednesday The sanctions target officials involved in a program under which former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff hired over 10,000 doctors from Cuba between 2013 and 2018 to provide services in Brazil's remote areas. The program received intense criticism after government records published in Brazil showed that Brazilian officials tapped the Pan American Health Organization, or PAHO, to facilitate payments to Cuba and avoid oversight by Brazil's Congress. Several Cuban doctors who deserted the mission sued PAHO, claiming the organization benefited from a labor-trafficking scheme in which the Cuban government pocketed about 85 percent of the salary payments made by Brazil. The State Department did not say how many officials have been sanctioned but said it revoked the visas of Mozart Julio Tabosa Sales and Alberto Kleiman, two former Brazilian Ministry of Health officials who the agency identified as having played a role in planning and implementing the Mais Médicos program. 'Brazil's Mais Médicos program was a diplomatic scam that exploited Cuban doctors, enriched the corrupt Cuban regime, and was covered up by both Brazilian and former PAHO officials,' a senior State Department official told the Herald. 'Let there be no doubt, the United States will continue to hold accountable all individuals linked to this coercive labor export scheme.' Tabosa worked in the implementation of the Mais Médicos program as secretary of Labor Management and Health Education at Brazil's Ministry of is still a senior ministry official, working as the secretary of Specialized Health Care. During the years the Mais Médicos program was in place, Kleiman worked as a special advisor for the Ministry of Health and as the head of its international relations department. He later worked for PAHO as its director of external relations, partnerships and resource mobilization. He is currently holding a similar position at the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, according to his LinkedIn profile. He is one of the defendants in the Cuban doctor's lawsuit against PAHO. The State Department said that the sanctioned officials used PAHO 'as an intermediary with the Cuban dictatorship to implement the program without following Brazilian constitutional requirements, dodging U.S. sanctions on Cuba, and knowingly paying the Cuban regime what was owed to Cuban medical workers.' It added that 'dozens of Cuban doctors who served in the program have reported being exploited by the Cuban regime as part of the program.' The Herald sent comment requests via email to Kleiman and PAHO and reached Tabosa's office in Brazil by phone with a comment request. None responded. Since 2019, the US State Department has labeled Cuba's medical missions as 'forced labor.' The Trump administration and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have made the issue a policy priority, expanding visa sanctions against those involved in the Cuban medical missions, including foreign officials. In June, the Department imposed visa restrictions on unidentified Central American officials linked to the Cuban medical missions. The lawsuit against PAHO, which is still ongoing, alleges that the Cuban government pocketed about 85 percent of the money Brazil paid for the doctors' salaries. Brazil made the payments to PAHO, which retained a 5 percent fee, around $129 million, and forwarded about $2.5 million to Cuba's government, the lawsuit claims. The Cuban doctors who sued said part of the money received through PAHO was frozen in Cuban bank accounts until the doctors' return from the 'official missions.' The lawsuit also details how Cuban authorities, and sometimes Cuban government officials working for PAHO as 'consultants,' controlled the doctors' movements and seized their travel documents 'It is good news that the Department is beginning to enforce the law requiring visa sanctions for individuals who were involved in the Mais Médicos program, and it should vigorously enforce the law against every culpable party,' Sam Dubin, a lawyer representing the Cuban doctors. 'There is substantial documentation in the public record about Brazilian, PAHO, and Cuban officials who were responsible for the creation and enforcement of the Mais Médicos program, and the Department has undoubtedly uncovered even more evidence,' he added. 'The Cuban doctors I represent, who were trafficked to Brazil through PAHO's direct engagement, believe there is no justification for omitting any individual or organization from these Congressionally mandated sanctions.' The sanctions against the Brazilian officials will increase diplomatic tensions with Brazil. President Trump imposed a 50 percent tax on some Brazilian products over charges against former president Jair Bolsonaro, who has been accused of a coup plot. Harold Pollack: I studied the high male suicide rate. Then I lost my friend to it.
When I think of my friend Andre, my mind drifts back 50 years to our times in grade school delivering papers together during frigid upstate New York winters. Then my mind drifts back 45 years to the thousands of conversations we had with our friends at our public high school cafeteria lunch table. Or my mind drifts 35 years, to our time as apartment mates, when Andre showed me how to drive our U-Haul moving truck, all the while ignoring the glances of admiring young women drawn to his movie-star good looks. A hundred more memories ran through my head as I learned of Andre's death by suicide three weeks ago. To say that I was surprised would hardly cover it. If I had to make a list of the 100 people in my life I was most concerned about, Andre would not have been on it. When we last shared a meal several months ago, he projected such confidence, solidity and strength. He leaves behind a partner and young-adult children. A friend's tribute on LinkedIn described 35 years of Andre's formidable accomplishments, which included founding several startups and playing key roles in other ventures. By a cruel twist of fate, Andre died within a week of my colleagues Nate Glasser, Jacob Jameson, Nabil Abou Baker, Elizabeth Tung and I publishing a study that documented the remarkably high suicide rate among older American men. We middle-aged and older men face higher suicide rates than are found among our teenage sons and grandsons, or among women of any age. Suicide rates among men dramatically escalate postretirement. Suicide rates among women, always a fraction of the male rate at younger ages, decline once women reach their mid-50s. This national challenge doesn't get the attention it should. Suicides among teens and young adults are far more noticeable, simply because disease doesn't take the lives of younger people like it does those who are elderly or even middle-aged. It's easy to lose sight of older-male suicides in the statistical noise, since we older men die far more frequently of various cancers and cardiovascular disease. We don't fully understand why older men have such high suicide rates. Suicides are more common in states with lax gun laws, where men who are unsafe are more likely to have lethal means close at hand. Social isolation is another important factor, as is the loss of a spouse or life partner, and the stings of financial and professional disappointments. Many of us older guys are reluctant to seek help when we are experiencing mental pain. For a million reasons as we age, it's easy to feel like a superfluous presence in this world. Several years ago, I myself experienced a bout of depression when my father passed and I faced some humbling work challenges. Andre was a source of strength and support in those difficult times. I will always regret that I could not do the same for him. I will never fully know why he took his life. I do know that he was a respected entrepreneur and colleague, a deeply loved partner, parent, brother and friend, now so very deeply missed.
