" Maa Ke Aasu...": Priyanka Gandhi Snaps At Amit Shah's Sonia Gandhi, Batla House Jab
Who did Congress veteran Sonia Gandhi cry for? And for whom did she not?
This was the subject of a barbed exchange between opposition leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Home Minister Amit Shah of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
The setting - a Lok Sabha debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, India's military response to a terrorist strike that killed 26 people, most of whom were civilians.
Mr Shah began the exchange Tuesday afternoon by claiming Mrs Gandhi had cried for the terrorists killed in the 2008 Batla House encounter in Delhi. "I remember one morning... I was eating breakfast and saw (Congress leader) Salman Khurshid crying on TV. He had come out of Sonia Gandhi's residence and said she had been sobbing over the Batla House incident."

"She should have cried for Mohan Sharma (a senior police officer killed by the terrorists) ..."
Mr Shah's attack underlined the BJP's strategy during this debate - to attack the Congress over its track record of responding to terror attacks when the party-led UPA was in power.
In an earlier section of his speech today Amit Shah also ripped into another senior Congress leader - P Chidambaram - for having asked for proof the terrorists behind the Pahalgam attack were from Pakistan. Mr Chidambaram suggested they may have been "homegrown".
Mr Shah criticised Mr Chidambaram for trying to 'save Pakistan' and declared, "When he says this, it means they (the Congress) are giving a clean chit (to Pak)."
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra - who spoke after DMK MP K Kanimozhi delivered a history-shrouded warning to the BJP before next year's Tamil Nadu election - launched a scathing counterattack, accusing the BJP of intelligence and security failures that compounded the Pahalgam attack.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi delivered a powerful speech for the opposition.
On Mr Shah's jab at her mother, she said, "Meri maa ke aasu tab gire jab unke pati ko aatankvadiyo ne shaheed kiya (My mother wept when her husband (former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi) was martyred by terrorists)," she thundered.

She also questioned the intelligence failure that led to the Pahalgam attack, asking and why a popular tourist destination had been left completely unguarded. "The Defence Minister (Rajnath Singh) spoke for an hour... everything was spoken about, from Operation Sindoor to terrorism to national security... but one subject was skipped. How did this attack happen? Why did it happen?" she said.
"Why wasn't a single soldier deployed? Did the government not know 1,000-1,500 people went there daily? There was no security... no first aid. These people went trusting the government..."

Centre to form expert panel to draft SOP against cyberattacks, NCII content, Madras HC told
CHENNAI: The union government on Tuesday informed the Madras High Court that an expert committee will be constituted to discuss and frame a standard operating procedure (SOP) to deal with cyberattacks targeting women, especially the uploading of non-consensual intimate images (NCII) and videos on digital platforms. Senior panel counsel A Kumaraguru, appearing for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), made the submission before Justice N Anand Venkatesh when a petition filed by a woman advocate came up for hearing. She had sought directions to MeitY to take down NCII content, uploaded by her former friend, and to block websites hosting such videos. 'Considering the sensitive nature of the matter and the rapidly evolving technological landscape, it is proposed to constitute a committee comprising officials from MeitY, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD),' he submitted. The committee, to be chaired by a joint secretary of MeitY, will frame an SOP for combating dissemination of NCII content, consisting of legal and technical solutions for immediate and long term action including steps to be taken by the victim. Senior counsel Abudu Kumar Rajaratnam, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that 13 more video links to the NCII contents have resurfaced. Referring to this, the judge noted that the content reappears 'like Ravana's head, even after being chopped off,' and called upon MeitY to consider taking action similar to that taken during Operation Sindoor, when websites were blocked for hosting adverse content.

"I don't know anything about it": Trump on U.S. imports of Russian chemicals and fertilizers
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) stated that he had no knowledge that the United States imports Russian Chemicals and fertilizers. The rebuttal came after India claimed that U.S. continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, fertilisers, as well as chemicals. When asked by the ANI about U.S. Imports of Russian chemicals and fertilizers during a press conference at the White House, Mr. Trump said, 'I don't know anything about it. We will have to check.' The comment came a day after the U.S. President announced that the United States would 'substantially raise' tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil. 'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the oil purchased, selling it on the open market for big profits. The U.S. President's statement was strongly rejected by India, with the Ministry of External Affairs calling the targeting of India 'unjustified and unreasonable.' In a detailed response, India said its imports from Russia were based on market needs and energy security, especially after Western nations diverted traditional supplies to Europe following the Ukraine conflict. 'In fact, India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict. The United States at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability. India's imports are meant to ensure predictable and affordable energy costs to the Indian consumer. They are a necessity compelled by global market situation. However, it is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,' the statement noted. The government also pointed to continued trade between Russia and both the United States and the European Union. 'Where the United States is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilisers, as well as chemicals. In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' the MEA statement said.

EAM Jaishankar meets Germany MP, discusses growing bilateral ties
Germany and India share a strong strategic partnership, which has grown steadily over the decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1951 ANI Asia External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday met German Member of Parliament Jurgen Hardt in New Delhi and discussed growing bilateral ties and recent global developments. According to MEA, Germany is one of India's most valued partners in Europe. The two countries share a strong strategic partnership, which has grown steadily over the decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1951. In March 2021, both sides marked 70 years of diplomatic ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have held regular meetings, both bilaterally and on the sidelines of key global summits. In fact, they have met six times in the last two years. Their latest meeting took place during the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy in June 2024, where they reviewed ongoing cooperation. Prior to that, the two leaders met at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023 and also during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May 2023.
