MCD catches, relocates 160 stray dogs in three-day drive following SC order
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been working to capture stray dogs in and around Red Fort in light of the Independence Day celebrations, said MCD Standing Committee chairperson Satya Sharma. She added that the drive to catch and relocate strays will intensify after August 15. 'A total of 160 stray dogs have been picked up from the high-security area in a three-day drive, which started on Monday,' said Ms. Sharma. The MCD panel chief added, 'Till August 15, municipal employees and the non-profit organisations we work with for the capture and sterilisation of stray dogs have been asked to prioritise the capture of aggressive canines. This is because we currently have limited space to keep dogs.' Ms. Sharma said the civic body is looking at community centres, unused school buildings, and other suitable spaces to create dog shelters, and meetings are being scheduled with the Delhi Development Authority and the Delhi government to identify more spaces for the relocation of stray dogs. A senior official said the municipality has identified two land parcels — three acres in Dwarka Sector 29 and 82 acres in Ghogha — that are available for setting up dog shelters. 'Further deliberations are under way,' he added. The official added that directions have been issued to animal birth control (ABC) centres, where stray animals are sterilised and immunised, not to release the current batch of captured canines. The MCD runs 20 ABCs, each of which houses several dog kennels. However, seven ABCs are inoperative due to ongoing repair works, lack of funds and shortfall in employees. The ABCs put together can accommodate around 2,000-2,500 dogs, the official added. As per the municipality's latest estimate, there are 10 lakh stray dogs in the national capital. The Supreme Court had on August 11 directed the MCD and the Delhi government to capture stray dogs, detain them in pounds, and ensure that they are not released back into public spaces. Activists thank CJI Meanwhile, animal rights activists thanked Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai for agreeing to list a case regarding a May 2024 order to treat stray canines with compassion. Ambika Shukla, who works with People for Animals, said, 'We are deeply grateful to the CJI for taking note of this. His intervention could mean a stay on the relocation order until the matter is heard. We are hopeful that every side will be given a fair hearing before any legal decision.' Former Union Minister Vijay Goel on Wednesday said he will soon convene a meeting of Delhi's residents' welfare associations at Talkatora Stadium to discuss further course of action in the wake of Monday's order. 'We urge the Centre to implement the order strictly,' he said. The former Delhi BJP chief, who has led a two-year drive for the relocation of stray dogs, has been demanding compensation for the victims of dog attacks.

Rahul Gandhi's lawyer fears ‘harm to Congress leader', later makes U-turn
THE LAWYER representing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the criminal defamation case filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, on Wednesday submitted a pursis in the Pune court hearing the case, but later made a U-turn, saying he had filed the application without consulting Rahul. The pursis stated that there was 'substantial apprehension that Rahul Gandhi may face harm' in light of his current political stand and Satyeki's 'lineage from Nathuram Godse'. On Wednesday, lawyer Milind Pawar, who is representing Rahul, filed the pursis, which is a formal written submission placed before court. Pawar had earlier said the court had admitted the pursis after he filed it in the afternoon. 'Rahul Gandhi has condemned the present government by raising the slogan 'Vote Chor Sarkar'. He has produced documentary evidence alleging serious electoral irregularities, directly implicating the Election Commission in actions which, by their very nature, provoke hostility from those whose political power and ideological interests stand challenged. The apprehension of harm to Rahul Gandhi is neither abstract nor unfounded. In light of the documented history of violent and anti-constitutional tendencies linked to the complainant's lineage, and considering the prevailing political climate, there exists a clear, reasonable, and substantial apprehension that Rahul Gandhi may face harm, wrongful implication, or other forms of targeting by persons subscribing to the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar,' it stated. 'Prudence demands that this apprehension be placed on record at this stage. The complainant himself has asserted descent from the associates of Mahatma Gandhi's assassins. In view of the grave history associated with such lineage, the defence harbours a genuine and reasonable apprehension that history must not be permitted to repeat itself,' it stated. However, in the evening, Pawar issued a press statement, 'The pursis dated August 13 was filed by me in the court without instructions from the client. The contents of the pursis were drafted by me without consulting my client Rahul Gandhi. My client has taken strong exception to filing of this pursis and has expressed his disagreement with the contents. I shall file a formal application tomorrow for withdrawal of the said pursis before the court.' When contacted earlier after the pursis was filed, Satyaki Savarkar had said, 'The statements made by defence in the pursis are completely baseless and appalling. They have claimed apprehension of harm to Rahul Gandhi which is baseless because he has been exempted from physically attending the proceedings. The defence has been filing such frivolous applications and pursis every now and then and are trying to delay the entire case.' Meanwhile on Wednesday Satyaki Savarkar's lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar moved the court seeking action against Rahul alleging he had committed perjury. 'In the past, all relevant documents have been duly provided to the advocate representing the accused, who has acknowledged the receipt. Despite this, the accused is now falsely claiming that no such material was received. This is a clear attempt to mislead the court. We therefore urge the court, in the strongest terms, to initiate appropriate action against the accused for this deliberate misrepresentation and committing perjury,' Kolhatkar said.

War On Drugs: In 6 months, Punjab cops filed 16,400 FIRs, over 25K held
Chandigarh: As part of the Punjab govt's ongoing anti-drug campaign, the Punjab Police has registered 16,400 FIRs and arrested 25,646 individuals in drug-related cases since March 1. The campaign resulted in seizures, including 1,059 kg of heroin, 366 kg of opium, 215 quintals of poppy husk, and 32.35 lakh intoxicant pills and tablets, in addition to Rs 12.32 crore in drug money. AAP spokesperson Baltej Pannu said the govt's campaign is encouraging residents to take a stand against drug use. Meanwhile, AAP MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal launched a strong attack on Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira. Dhaliwal alleged that Khaira's recent actions and statements are a "cover-up" driven by fear following the arrest of his former personal security officer, Joga Singh, in a drug case. "The day Joga Singh was arrested, Khaira became visibly restless... clearly fearing that Joga Singh's statements might lead to his re-arrest," he added.
