The big screen or the streaming screen? Which outlet offers more to the Pittsburgh film industry?

CBS News16-04-2025
Pop quiz: What was the last movie you saw in the theater? Now, what was the last movie you streamed or TV show you watched multiple episodes of on a streaming service?
It was probably easier to answer the second question than it was the first, right?
Certainly, that has had an impact on the film industry, including here in Pittsburgh. While the pandemic did a number on the movie industry and it's still struggling to recover, streaming entertainment took off and is still climbing.
When
The Dark Knight Rises
hit the big screen, we swelled with Pittsburgh pride at the very obvious local scenes.
"We're not picky, we just want the work," said Dawn Keezer, the Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Film Office.
The local film workers are getting that work, while the streaming screen might be smaller, Pittsburgh is appearing on
Watson
on CBS, and
The Pitt
with Noah Wyle on Max.
"All those scenes where you see when they're sitting in the ER, that's all modeled after [Allegheny General Hospital]," Keezer said. "They love pretending they're here, we just really wish they were here."
Both
Watson
and
The Pitt
shot their exterior shots in town for about four days each, but the rest is studio work elsewhere.
"The cost differential between filming
Watson
where it was written, in Pittsburgh, or Vancouver, Canada, was $16 million," Keezer explained. "So they went to Canada."
Since movie theater attendance is half of what it was pre-pandemic, streaming shows is now huge and a bigger source of entertainment for many, but since it's now multiple episodes in a season rather than a single movie, it means more work.
"Longer work, look at
Mayor of Kingstown,
they're here for about six months out of every year," Keezer said. "Now, we're in the process of completing season four with hopes for season five."
American Rust has also made return visits, but there is still a desire for the 12-week stays of a major film.
"I don't think movies are dead," Keezer declared. "I don't think theaters are dead. I think people are still looking for forms of entertainment. It's a matter of creating the content that they actually want to see."
Keezer pointed out that it's especially challenging for families with younger children to find something in the theaters, and with the exception of the
Minecraft Movie
, even teenagers like her son have no desire to go see a movie; they'd rather watch YouTube or one of the other streaming outlets.
Now, all of that said, even with the desire for the return of a big movie to Pittsburgh, the streaming services offer workers the chance to move up in the crew and establish connections. When it comes to movies, it's like starting from scratch each time.

Should 'New Heights' YouTube glitch concern NFL ahead of Chiefs-Chargers Week 1 game?

Taylor Swift's appearance on the "New Heights" podcast led to more than 1 million concurrent viewers on YouTube. The video feed on the platform abruptly ended about one hour and 45 minutes into the stream, which left many confused, since the show had a timestamp of more than two hours. The issue was resolved, but with the NFL and YouTube streaming the Week 1 game in Brazil between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5, it begged the question: should the NFL be concerned about YouTube's capability to stream a game to a worldwide audience that will command far more than one million viewers at once? It's not an unfamiliar situation for the league. Last season, as the first-ever NFL games aired live on Netflix set for Christmas Day approached, the streaming service also faced questions about the streaming capabilities in the wake of the issues viewers experienced during the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight. Netflix had roughly one month to figure out the issues and largely aced the test, with hardly any complaints throughout the two games (and a Beyoncé live halftime performance). YouTube does provide the NFL Sunday Ticket Package and many people watch the league through YouTubeTV. But those are premium, subscription-based services with a number of viewers the company – owned by Google – is now accustomed to. (The tech issues for Sunday Ticket during the 2023 season certainly irked fans.) The scale of the Chiefs-Chargers game will exponentially increase the viewership numbers compared to those products, especially since the game is free to watch. A spokeswoman from Google confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that it was not a YouTube issue that led to the glitch. After the calamities of the Paul-Tyson fight, Netflix addressed its issues in connecting its backup servers – utilized to account for the heightened traffic on the platform – with the countless internet service providers (ISPs) throughout the world. Worth noting is that millions of people will be using YouTube simultaneously not for the purposes of watching the AFC West matchup, which could also strain streaming capacity. The NFL would not have handed out exclusive rights to YouTube – financial terms have not been disclosed but its almost certainly in the nine-figure range after NBCUniversal paid more than $100 million to air the first-ever game in Brazil in 2024 on Peacock – if the league didn't think the company could pull it off without issue. Ultimately, YouTube corrected the "New Heights" issue and fans had their "Tayvis" moment. But come Week 1, the company won't have that leeway.

Bonkers Red-Band Trailer For DC's PEACEMAKER Season 2 Delivers Bloody Mayhem — GeekTyrant

HBO Max has unleashed the red-band trailer for Peacemaker Season 2, and it's just as chaotic, violent, and unfiltered as fans could've hoped for. With the series set to return next week, this trailer gives us a clear look at where things are headed, and it looks absolutely bonkers! From an eye-gouging Eagly bird attack to multiversal madness, James Gunn is clearly upping the stakes as the show transitions fully into the new DC Universe. The trailer wastes no time going full throttle. There's a heavy dose of bloody violence, and there's even an orgy thrown into the mix, because of course there is, along with a Lex Luthor name drop that suggests some major DC players are creeping into the storyline. The season teases a trip into a strange new world where things are just a bit... off. There's a version of Peacemaker who's famous, emotionally stable, and in love with Emilia Harcourt . Whether this is a parallel universe, an illusion, or something even crazier remains to be seen. We also get a glimpse of Rick Flag Sr. , played by Frank Grillo, who's clearly looking for revenge after his son's death in The Suicide Squad . The guy seems pissed — and likely dangerous. James Gunn confirmed that Season 2 will have a direct tie-in with Superman , the upcoming DCU film. 'You've seen what we call the QUC, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, in the first season of Peacemaker , and we see more about that technology in Superman ,' said Gunn. 'The QUC is the center of the story in Peacemaker season 2.' He added, 'We see a lot of different characters from Superman in the [season], [including] Isabela and Nathan and Sean, and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman .' He even teased that, 'There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show.' That last comment has fans speculating, especially since the final few episodes weren't sent to critics, just like Season 1, which famously featured surprise cameos from Aquaman and The Flash. Critics were given five of the eight episodes ahead of the premiere, and the social media and review embargo lifts tomorrow. That's when we'll get the first wave of reactions to see if Peacemaker can keep DC Studios' current hot streak going, following the success of Creature Commandos and Superman . Peacemaker season 2 follows Christopher 'Chris' Smith, aka Peacemaker, the vigilante superhero, as he struggles to reconcile his past with his newfound sense of purpose while continuing to kick righteous evildoer butt in his misguided quest for peace at any cost. He discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands. This second batch of episodes will star Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Sol Rodríguez, David Denman, Brey Noelle, and Tim Meadows. Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directed three, including the first episode. The second season of Peacemaker officially premieres August 21, 2025, on HBO Max.

Nintendo's popular new ‘Mario Kart' cow draws a protest letter from PETA

Geek Life: Fun stories, memes, humor and other random items at the intersection of tech, science, business and culture. SEE MORE Cow, a breakout star in the new 'Mario Kart World' video game, wears a nose ring that is viewed as a painful accessory by the animal rights group PETA. (Screenshot via Nintendo on YouTube) The moos turned to boos over the depiction of a popular new video game cow character. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is protesting the design of Cow, a scooter-riding farm animal in the new 'Mario Kart World' because the character wears a nose ring. 'Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control, and even drag animals to their deaths,' PETA said in a letter (in full below) Thursday to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa. Nintendo of America is headquartered in Redmond, Wash. The game launched exclusively on the new Nintendo Switch 2 game console, which released in June to much fanfare. And Cow has become a breakout star, as The New York Times reported in July, with videos on social media showcasing the bovine's popularity. PETA is less enthralled — at least when it comes to the nose ring. The organization is calling for Nintendo to redesign Cow's look, so it can 'race freely — without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines.' Read PETA's letter to Nintendo, and watch a trailer for 'Mario Kart World' below: Dear Mr. Furukawa: Greetings! I'm writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). PETA entities have more than 10 million members and supporters globally. We herd there's a new star in Mario Kart World: Cow! She is already winning hearts everywhere—including ours. But one detail has us hitting the brakes: The brass ring in Cow's nose. Would you please show empathy towards bovines and remove the nose ring? Here's why this is so important: Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control, and even drag animals to their deaths. These brass rings are crudely stabbed through the sensitive septum of cows and bulls, which can cause lasting pain and discomfort. The dairy industry will also clip spiked nose rings on baby cows so that the comforting act of nursing from their mother causes her pain and the baby is rejected and kicked away. To control bulls, a chain might be fastened from the nose ring to the bull's horn for even more pain-driven control. The brass ring in Cow's nose glosses over real world violence and cruelty to animals. That's why we're asking you to give this beloved bovine a small but meaningful upgrade: Remove the nose ring and let Cow race freely—without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines. Every animal is someone. So leave the rings to Sonic and let Cow breathe free!
