No more denial: Home minister urges Kedah to act as state ranks among top four in Malaysia for drug abuse

Malay Mail5 days ago
JITRA, July 25 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has urged the Kedah government to step up efforts to remove the state from the top four nationwide for drug addiction rates.
He said that, based on addiction rates per 100,000 population, the most affected districts include Pendang (Kedah), Kuala Krai (Kelantan) and Bachok (Kelantan), while Terengganu recorded the highest rate among states, followed by Perlis, Kelantan and Kedah.
'Data from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, Health Ministry and rehabilitation centres, analysed using United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime methods, show Kedah remains among the states with the highest drug abuse rates,' he said.
'We are no longer in an era of finger-pointing or complacency. Every leader, at the level of government, mosques, community organisations, or schools, must play an active role in addressing this drug crisis,' he said at the launch of the 2025 National Anti-Drugs Day Commemoration ceremony at Dataran Darulaman here today.
Also present at the event, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stressed that the drug problem is no longer a political issue but a shared responsibility, and tackling it effectively requires three key elements.
'First, we must abandon the denial syndrome and acknowledge the severity of the problem. Second, we must recognise that no single entity can solve it alone. Third, we must show the commitment to adapt and enhance existing approaches for a more integrated and holistic response,' he said.
However, Saifuddin acknowledged that logistical challenges remain, particularly in securing maritime routes.
'Eighty percent of drugs enter Malaysia by sea, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency is now tasked with monitoring a vast area of 680,000 square kilometres,' he said, adding the Home Ministry has submitted a request to the Prime Minister for additional enforcement equipment.
'The government is also strengthening international cooperation through intelligence sharing and joint regional operations with ASEAN and the United Nations. This year alone, RM480 million has been allocated to AADK operations and the management of rehabilitation centres. We are now seeking an additional RM500 million to further reinforce these efforts,' he said
Saifuddin also noted that from an enforcement standpoint, Malaysia already has strong legal instruments in place, such as the Dangerous Drugs Act and the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act, which were both amended last year to impose stiffer penalties on traffickers and syndicates. — Bernama

JB medical practitioner loses over RM8mil to investment scam

JOHOR BARU: A medical practitioner lost more than RM8mil of her savings after being scammed to invest in a bogus online stock investment scheme. Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the victim, a 53-year-old female, lodged a police report on Tuesday (July 29) claiming she had been scammed of her savings amounting to RM8.7mil. 'According to the victim, in April this year, she came across an investment advertisement on social media that promised high returns. She became interested and contacted the suspect to find out more about it. 'The victim was offered profits of up to 520% from the total amount of investments she made,' he said in a statement here on Wednesday (July 30). ACP Raub added that believing the profits that she would get, from May until this month, she made payments of RM8.7mil to several bank accounts as instructed by the suspect. He said from the total amount of investments she had made, the victim only received about RM6,033 in profit. 'When the victim wants to withdraw her funds and profits, the suspect forced her to pay another RM500,000 as a deposit and even threatened that her account would be frozen. 'This made the victim realise that she had been cheated before lodging a police report,' he said adding that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. ACP Raub urged the public to be vigilant against online investment scams that promise unrealistic returns within a short period of time. 'Anybody can be a victim of scammers no matter their status or career. They should always be careful when come across investment opportunities especially on social media,' he added. He said the public should follow the Royal Malaysia Police's commercial crime investigation unit social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for updates on the latest scam tactics.

Pasir Mas chosen for pilot project to fight drug abuse

PASIR MAS: The district of Pasir Mas has been selected as the pilot location for the 'Jihad Perangi Dadah' programme, a community-based initiative to combat drug abuse. The project will involve local leaders, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK). Kelantan PEMADAM chairman Zamakhshari Muhamad explained that village heads and community leaders often hesitate to report drug-related activities due to safety concerns. 'We will introduce a new reporting method for local leaders to safely share information on drug cases in their areas,' he said. The programme will first launch in Pasir Mas before expanding to other districts. Zamakhshari, who also chairs the Kelantan Youth, Sports, and NGOs Committee, emphasized PEMADAM's ongoing efforts to raise awareness alongside AADK. 'Our goal is to reduce drug cases and supply through integrated community campaigns,' he added. Recent reports highlight Kelantan as having the highest drug abuse rate in Malaysia, with 1,130 cases per 100,000 people. Perlis, Terengganu, and Kedah follow closely. - Bernama

Data collection vs privacy: Fahmi says MPD critics are missing the real threat

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil again defended the government's mandatory mobile phone data collection programme today, dismissing claims that the move infringes on personal privacy and arguing that it is a 'sovereign act.' Speaking at the International Connectivity Conference and Expo here, the minister suggested critics were being disingenuous by focusing on the government's programme while ignoring cases of actual data theft by large corporations. 'Being in control of hardware, it's a sovereign act. I know some of you made hue and cry about the MCMC rule, which is the MPD programme to identify trends without encroaching on personal identifiable information of people,' he said. He then cited search giant Google being fined US$314 million in California for allegedly stealing data from the phones of 14 million users. 'Yet we make no noise about the data that we give out for free, every single day,' Fahmi said. His comments came after he told the Dewan Rakyat earlier today that the Mobile Population Data (MPD) collection programme would not be scrapped because no privacy violation has occurred, despite mounting calls for its cessation. The minister and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have faced criticism since the MPD programme was reported, with detractors raising concerns about potential privacy breaches. The MCMC previously clarified that the data collected from mobile network operators (MNOs) is used strictly for generating official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key areas: the information and communications technology (ICT) sector and the tourism sector. For the ICT sector, the commission said MPD helps produce granular statistics, such as active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates at state, district, and constituency levels. For tourism, it generates indicators like the number of visitors and domestic tourism trips. The MCMC has assured the public that no personally identifiable information (PII) is accessed, processed, or disclosed in this programme.
