Fraudsters tried to dupe us saying they would sue Boeing: Family of AI 171 victim
The men, allegedly posing as representatives of the central government and a Supreme Court lawyer, claimed that they would get the family Rs 8-10 crore compensation, and pressured them to sign certain documents.
While the incident is from July 18-19, the FIR was lodged on July 29 on the directions of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). It has been lodged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 329 (3) for 'criminal trespass', which carries a maximum imprisonment of up to three months and a fine of Rs 5,000.
In his complaint, Menaria's son Deepak Menaria said that on the evening of July 17, he received a call from a person who identified himself as one Bhupendra, saying that he will come for verification on behalf of the central government.
'I was told that a team from Delhi and Mumbai will come to my house and 'secret verification' will be done, so for this, a copy of my late father's passport and ticket will be needed. They tried to lure me saying that if I file a case against Boeing, I will get Rs 8-10 crore,' he wrote in his complaint.
In a purported audio recording of the call, the man is heard telling Deepak to keep it a secret, because if he speaks about it to relatives, they may start seeking money too.
'On July 18, around 7:45 pm, a man and a woman reached my house in Rundeda in a Gujarat numbered vehicle. Both of them entered my house and started talking in a confusing manner to my mother. My mother called and told me that two people had come. I immediately reached home and found them sitting in my house, claiming to be from the Supreme Court,' he said.
'They pressured me and my mother to put my thumb impression and sign some documents. When I asked them the purpose, they spoke about a case against Boeing in America. When I told them that I will file a case, the duo unethically pressured me to give my thumb impression and signature on the documents,' he alleged, adding that after he did not yield, both of them left around 8:40 pm.
The next day, he sought assistance from the local police, but claimed that they weren't of much help. Later in the day, around 4:30 pm, the alleged fraudsters parked their vehicle a kilometre away from the Menaria residence and walked the rest of the distance.
As they repeated some of the things they had said the day before, Deepak called his neighbours for help. Subsequently, police from Vallabh Nagar police station reached his residence and took the men to the police station.
Deepak alleged that the Station House Officer of Vallabh Nagar police station did not lodge an FIR, saying that he should collect it from the SP's office since he had already lodged a complaint there.
He claimed an FIR was lodged only after he approached the DLSA. Udaipur Superintendent of Police Yogesh Goyal said that, 'An FIR has been lodged. As per the primary inquiry, some advocates and some locals wanted (the family) to become their client and file a case against the airline. They wanted to take their consent, as per the initial investigation. However, the family says that they were persisting on a regular basis.'

It suggested that a favoured architect consultant was appointed without a proper tender, violating procurement and general financial rules, sources said. Although six consultants were empanelled, it was noted that financial bids must be called separately for each project. This requirement was ignored and an arbitrary decision was taken to appoint consultants district-wise or region-wise, they said, claiming that this effectively meant that a single consultant was allowed to handle all projects.

South African man arrested with heroin at Mumbai airport gets 15 yrs in jail
A special court sentenced to 15 years in jail a South African national, who was arrested with 3.98 kg of heroin at the Mumbai airport. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had claimed that it had received information that a person travelling by flight of Ethiopian Airlines at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, on April 12, 2022, would be carrying contraband in his check-in baggage. The NCB had claimed that while conducting an inspection of a red trolley bag that the accused was carrying, it was found that the flaps of both sides of the bag were modified and covered with cotton cloth. When they were cut open, two plastic packets were found, hidden on both sides. The NCB claimed that the packets had a cream-coloured powder substance and the drug testing kit revealed it to be heroin. The accused's lawyer had said that there was no proof that the bag belonged to him as there was no proof that he had picked it up from the conveyor belt and that it was possible that it was 'planted' on him by the real culprit. The lawyer also submitted that the accused had travelled from Johannesburg to Addis Ababa and from Addis Ababa to Mumbai and his bag would have gone through a strict check but nothing was found. '…the bag was having a baggage tag which is mandatory to be affixed on the baggage and on the boarding pass. The baggage tag affixed on the bag was having details with the name of the accused the flight by which he travelled. In those… there are details of accused No.1. Under such circumstances, the allegations of planting the baggage or foisting the bag upon the accused are not certainly acceptable,' the court said. It also did not accept the accused's contention that proper procedure for search, seizure and analysis of the drug was not followed.

Chandigarh: Woman among 4 drug peddlers held, 51.21 grams of heroin recovered
The Chandigarh Police has arrested four drug peddlers, including a woman, in two separate cases and seized a total of 51.21 grams of heroin from their possession. In the first case, a team from Sector-36 police station, led by Inspector Jai Parkash Singh, arrested two men involved in drug peddling. The arrests took place on the night of August 4 near the forest area close to Sector 53–Mohali turn. The police team was patrolling the area when two suspicious individuals carrying bags were seen approaching from the direction of Khalsa College, Mohali. Upon noticing the police, the duo turned around and attempted to flee but were apprehended after a brief chase. They were identified as Gurpreet Singh (22), a cab driver from Dhandiquadim village, Jalalabad West, currently residing in Kharar, and Ashok, alias Happy (29), a private employee and resident of Sector 52, Chandigarh. A search of their bags led to the recovery of 21.46 grams of heroin from Gurpreet and 15.28 grams from Ashok, totalling 36.74 grams. An FIR under Section 21 of the NDPS Act was registered at Sector 36 police station. Initial investigations revealed that the two accused had been sourcing heroin from a supplier based at Kharar. They would purchase around 30–40 grams of heroin for approximately Rs 50,000 and then sell the substance to users in Chandigarh and Mohali. Gurpreet and Ashok came into contact with the drug dealer through a common friend during a visit to Shimla. Both were produced before the court on Tuesday, and the police secured one-day remand to trace the supplier. In the second case, the team from Maloya police station, led by SHO Inspector Jasbir Singh, arrested a woman drug peddler and her associate. The arrests followed an earlier incident on August 2, when ASI Satnam Singh, while on patrol near the petrol pump in Sector 38-West, apprehended Bobby (24), a resident of Sector 38-A, Chandigarh, and recovered 12.47 grams of heroin from him. During further investigation, the police arrested the co-accused, Heena (30), wife of Deepak and a resident of DMC, Chandigarh. She was apprehended on August 4, and 14.47 grams of heroin was recovered from her possession. In total, the police recovered 51.21 grams of heroin in both cases, 21.46 gms from Gurpreet, 15.28 gms from Ashok, 12.47 gms from Bobby, and 14.47 gms from Heena. All the accused are currently under police remand. The Chandigarh Police has said that these arrests are part of an intensified anti-drug operation being carried out in the run-up to the Independence Day. The aim is to break down local drug networks and trace supply chains extending into areas like Kharar and Mohali. Further investigations are ongoing to identify the main suppliers and expand the crackdown on narcotics trafficking in the region, said the police.
