John Savournin's staging translates the action to the 1950s world of the New York mafia where Don Zeta needs his mafioso family to get its hands on Hanna Glawari's fortune before it falls into the hands of their mob rivals, so he gives Danilo, his consigliere, the job of marrying her.

Orpheus and Eurydice at Edinburgh Playhouse ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Despite the richness of the English language, I think there are not enough superlatives to praise the creation of this rendition of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice. From the very opening where we see the superb funambulist as Eurydice descend twisting into the underworld hanging from a harness to the final dénouement, the staging was outstanding, the music perfection, the singing immensely moving, and the acrobatics stunning. The set was minimalist but of a beautiful monochrome setting off the red of Eurydice's dress with the surtitles projected onto the back often marvellously smoking and dissolving as the Italian was sung. The conductor, Laurence Cummings, was masterful in his control of the wonderful Scottish Chamber Orchestra, whilst the singing of not only Iestyn Davies as Orpheus and Samantha Clarke as both Eurydice & Amor but also that of the chorus from Scottish Opera was flawless. This production by Opera Queensland employing the astounding skills and beauty of the Australian contemporary circus company, Circa demanded a standing ovation, something I do not engage in lightly.

County cricket: One-Day Cup off to a good start despite shameful neglect
You might not have heard of Garsington Opera, but you may have heard of its nextdoor neighbour, Paul Getty's celebrated cricket ground. Both are on the Wormsley Estate, simultaneously just off the M1 and a world away. Not all country house opera venues are as closely linked to cricket as this one, but there are other parallels. Both depend on weather to some extent – even the lovely Opera Holland Park is rather different in the golden hour if it's raining – and both aren't quite as middle-aged and middle class as you might suspect, especially if you look into their community work. And both play an important role in developing the superstars of the future. Country house opera survives, thrives even, because it accepts what it is (i.e. not the Royal Opera House or the New York Met); it provides a distinctive all-day experience, integrating festival elements with the main attraction; and it markets itself to its niche audience effectively. Watching the live streams of the One-Day Cup largely from out grounds last week, it struck me that there's a template to explore there. That's if domestic 50-over cricket survives at all. The loss of David Lawrence is still felt sharply at Gloucestershire and it's hard not to think that those beautiful photos of him with the Blast trophy last autumn may be inspiring his club towards another trophy this season. Perhaps that's for the romantics, but the One Day Cup is where we fools gather in August and Gloucestershire sit top of Group A with the only played three, won three record in the country. If there was an easy way to ringfence XIs so such imbalances could be avoided, I suspect I could be persuaded otherwise. Kelsey Parker makes heartbreaking admission about her children after Tom's death
KELSEY Parker has admitted her children have had to learn about grief at too young an age. The actress is the widow of The Wanted singer, Tom Parker, who died from a brain tumor in 2022 and the couple shared two children, Aurelia, six, and Bodhi, four. 5 5 5 5 But in a tragic turn of events, Kelsey's third child Phoenix Parker-Lindsay, was stillborn in June. The baby boy was her first child with partner, Will Lindsay, whom she started dating last September. Now Kelsey has opened up about the trauma her young family has endured in recent years and how she has managed it with her two children. "Well I do think I'm a little bit of a pro now when it comes to grief. I just felt what was natural and I think your children lead you as well into where they want to go with the conversation around death," Kelsey told Daily Mail in an interview. "So my daughter wants to talk about it all the time and Bodhi is more quiet, so I then take the lead and when they want to have a conversation, we talk about it, but I'm very open and I'm very honest. " Kelsey added: "I don't use words like anyone's gone to sleep, you know, they are dead and they're not coming back. So I just try my best." The mum-of-three explained how important it was to keep the children's routine after she lost Phoenix. "They went straight back to school because I think routine is so good for your children in loss, because the adults are grieving and they're hearing a lot of words and a lot of talking," Kelsey explained. "And I think for them, normality and being in school is really good for them. And routine, I think well, not maybe school such, but routine. Like living their routine was good for them." Kelsey added: "They needed to see me be there, I was doing the school pickup because they needed to know that I was okay and that I'm not going anywhere. "So I think that's really important, especially after since they obviously lost Tom as well." Kelsey Parker opens up on devastating baby loss and why she took social media break amid grief She continued: "They are so aware of death and loss, so I think it's more the other children in the class that haven't gone through it and my children are talking about death, but it's making and going to make my children the strongest of adults." Earlier this week, Kelsey shared a heartbreaking letter to her "angel" baby as she continued to deal with the "ache" of her loss. One part of the letter read: "For now, I'm learning to live with the ache, to breathe through the waves, and to find little pockets of peace in the middle of the storm. "And I know that even though I can't hold you in my arms, I carry you in my heart, always." 5
