Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper set for fresh start

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has admitted that the team still has some issues to fix ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The 30-year-old spent most of last season on the bench with Nasreddine Nabi preferring Bruce Bvuma. Ahead of the Nedbank Cup final, Bvuma was dropped for Petersen as Amakhosi won their first trophy in 10 years.
With the season kicking off this weekend, the former Bidvest Wits shotstopper is likely to be Kaizer Chiefs' number one goalkeeper when Amakhosi plays Stellenbosch next weekend.
'If you compare last season, like from the start of pre-season to obviously this season, last season it was new coaches, new technical team, new ideas, all of that,' said Petersen on SABC TV .
'Not 100% sure what we want to do, where we want to be, where we're supposed to be, but I think this season, starting now, from this pre-season, people could see that there's so much more trust and understanding in the game plan, knowing what we want to do. And I think the main part is understanding your role and the responsibility within the system.
'And I think this season, you can see that the guys are understanding that and that gives us that confidence to be able to stick to the game plan and do what we know we can do and show the people that this is what we've been working on, and we can do it. So, I know for a fact that from here, we're just going to get better.
'Yes, there's still a few things we need to fix in the build-up, but as you can see, there's so much improvement and progress. So definitely for sure this season you'll see us more confident playing out from the back and obviously the saving attacks and keeping the ball,' Petersen said.
It was reported that Kaizer Chiefs might look for a new goalkeeper this pre-season, with Fiacre Ntwari likely to be sold.

Orlando Pirates coach welcomes talent headache

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has said what the fans and players love to hear. The Moroccan has stressed that he won't limit his players' natural flair and skill. The Soweto giants have packed their squad with new quality, giving coach Ouaddou plenty to think about. It's the kind of problem most coaches wish for and the Orlando Pirates mentor has said he's happy with the 'headache' of picking his starting eleven from a star-studded squad. TV details: Stellenbosch vs Kaizer Chiefs 'I'm a happy coach. When you have such talented players, of course, you can have a headache at the end of the week to make your starting eleven,' Ouaddou told the media during the Betway Premiership launch. Orlando Pirates players celebrate Patrick Maswanganyi's goal against Polokwane City in the MTN8 at the Orlando Stadium. Image: Goal Ngcobo: Kaizer Chiefs to build on Nedbank Cup win 'But yes, I want to give my players—especially these kinds of players, these talented ones—autonomy. I don't want to block them in the way they play. The Orlando Pirates tactician added that while some principles are important, 'we don't have to kill the creativity for these kinds of players. As a coach, it is a crime to do that.' With 12 new signings joining a strong squad, Ouaddou's challenge is to balance freedom with team discipline. Fans can expect a Pirates side that values attacking flair and skill this season. PSL 2025/26 season kicks off- #FansMatter too!

THIS weekend marks the official start of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) 2025/2026 season after a long two-month break, which, in another world, would have been enough to iron out some issues that were thorny last season. But, warning - this is South African football; we play on, and we will find ourselves dealing with the very same issues as it has been season in, season out. And because of this, the phrase about 'respecting the fans who spend their hard-earned money to watch games and support us', has got to be the most condescending speech in South African football. Because really, is it respect to serve the very hard-working fans the same problems season after season? Take the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) matter for instance, the season is starting and there is not a single step to point out that it may be here soon. That, after the Minister of Sports Gayton McKenzie promised last season that it will be here by this time. Instead, we learned in the last month that McKenzie has joined the likes of PSL Chairman Irvin Khoza and the South African Football Association (Safa) President Danny Jordaan in the finger-pointing game regarding why the technology is not being implemented. Anyways, VAR is not the only talking point ahead of the season, even though it will probably dominate as we look ahead to neverending refereeing blunders that undermine the hard-working fans, job-always-on-the-line coaches and the game itself. At this stage we can only hope that Safa have done their part to get them (referees) up to speed, fitness and sharpness ahead of the season. Other people who are guilty of serving that condescending speech to the hard-working fans, are those who are the heart of the game themselves - the players. Yes, things are easily said tahn done from the sidelines, behind the keyboard or from the stands, but the fans deserve a bit of an improved quality. It would be nice to see an end to the avalanche of games drawn. It would be nice to see goals, goals and more goals! It would be nice to see a race to the league title and not have Mamelodi Sundowns winning it yet again with about seven or so games still to go. It would be nice to see a hot race to the Golden Boot award, and see it taking us over a 20-goal margin. Honestly, it is not too much to ask that this season, can the #FansMatter too!

Bok Women bank on experience in naming squad for Women's Rugby World Cup

Nolusindiso Booi, centre, the Springbok Women's most experienced Test captain, will once again lead the team at 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup in England. Nolusindiso Booi, the most-capped Springbok Women's player, will lead a strong, experienced South African squad boasting a combined 689 Test caps to the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup in England in a few weeks' time. Bok Women's head coach Swys de Bruin's squad for the World Cup – where South Africa will face Brazil, Italy and France in Pool D – was named at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday. Booi, who captained the squad at the previous tournament in New Zealand in 2022, is also South Africa's most experienced Test captain, having led the side in 23 Tests. She said she was excited to have made the cut. 'We know the work needs to start again because we've been working so hard until now. We've been prepared enough and we did have a couple of games where we did have a crowd, because that is one of the things that are making people nervous when they reach that stage,' she said. Babalwa Latsha, who captained the Bok Women in 14 Test matches as well as in the recent Black Ferns XV series, was named as vice-captain. Booi and Tayla Kinsey are the most experienced players in the squad, with 19 of the 32 players boasting previous World Cup experience. Eight of the 19 forwards will be experiencing a Women's Rugby World Cup for the first time. Four of the 13 backs will represent South Africa on this level for the first time. All 32 players selected for the Women's Rugby World Cup featured either against Spain in April, the Rugby Africa Women's Cup, the two Tests against Canada in July, or the two recent internationals against the Black Ferns XV, which was a telling factor in their final selection, according to De Bruin.
