Prosecution receives representations from eight accused in RM24.2 million fraud case
KOTA KINABALU (April 21): The prosecution has received representations from eight of the ten individuals accused of fraudulently withdrawing RM24.2 million from fixed deposit accounts, the High Court was told today.
Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Nazran Mohd Sham informed High Court judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol that the remaining two accused are still considering whether to submit similar representations.
The eight who submitted representations are Josepin J. Langkan, Leong Hin Ping, Vireonis Jonok, Hasran Magin, Subramaniam Thangavelu, Sugumaran K. Ponniah, Mazlani Jenuary and Nasir Abdul Rasid. The other two — Iren Chin Nyuk Thien and Christina @ Caroline Pianus Etip — have yet to decide.
All ten were charged under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code for allegedly being part of an organised criminal group that committed serious offences for material gain between April 26 and July 10, 2024 at an MBSB branch here. They face five to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The group includes a contractor, a teacher, two pensioners, two bank managers, a self-employed individual, two unemployed persons and a fisherman.
Judge Duncan set May 27 and June 5 for further updates on the representations and vacated the trial dates originally scheduled for May 13 to 15.

KLUANG: Police have arrested five men in connection with the death of an Indonesian man at an oil palm plantation here. 'The suspect was driving towards Kluang town from Taman Sri Kluang and suddenly veered into the opposite lane. 'He collided head-on with another car in that lane,' he said. The suspect was uninjured while a 36-year-old businessman in the other car suffered injuries to his hands and had some abdominal pain. After the incident, the suspect was taken to the Kluang police headquarters' Narcotics Crime Investigation Division for a urine test. The suspect also has a criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for self-administering dangerous drugs.

Police detain Singaporean for road rage incident in Skudai
JOHOR BAHRU: Police arrested a 40-year-old Singaporean man after he was involved in a road rage incident and alleged vandalism against another car around Tun Aminah, Skudai yesterday. Johor Bahru Utara (North) police chief ACP Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said after a 31-year-old local man lodged a report about the incident at 3.01 pm, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Johor Bahru Utara police headquarters (IPD) arrested the suspect at about 6.20 pm yesterday (June 8) and made several seizures. 'The complainant stated that while driving his BMW at 2.39pm in the Tun Aminah area, he was honked at by a Toyota Altis with a Singapore registration number, whose driver was dissatisfied because his path was blocked. An argument ensued and the suspect allegedly kicked the complainant's car, causing damage. However, the complainant did not suffer any injuries,' he said in a statement today. Balveer Singh said the suspect had no previous criminal record and tested negative for drugs. He said the suspect would be brought to the Johor Bahru Court tomorrow (June 9) for a remand application for the case to be investigated under Section 426 of the Penal Code (for mischief and damage of property) and Section 509 of the Penal Code (utterance of insult).
