UNC's First Four win draws record TV ratings
March 20 - While North Carolina's addition to the NCAA Tournament was deemed controversial, there is no denying the program's March pedigree and it was evident in record First Four television ratings on Tuesday.
According to Front Office Sports, North Carolina's 95-68 victory over San Diego State in an NCAA Tournament play-in game earned 2.2 million viewers on TruTV for a First Four single-game record.
Adding in the 1.4 million that watched an earlier play-in game between Alabama State and Saint Francis (PA), the evening earned a First Four record of 3.6 million combined viewers.
The Tar Heels earned a tournament bid with a 22-13 record but were just 1-12 in Quad 1 games. West Virginia was left out with a 19-13 record but a 6-10 mark in Quad 1 games. West Virgina governor Patrick Morrisey went as far as to announce an investigation into the NCAA and the tournament selection committee.
Adding to the controversy is that North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham is the chair on the NCAA Tournament selection committee and earned a bonus when the Tar Heels defeated San Diego State to officially grab a tourney spot.
North Carolina now is set to face Ole Miss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday in a game that will be televised on TNT.

'My parents were very much against [boyfriends] as it interfered with training,' she told The Times. 'When I was younger I wasn't even allowed to hang out with my girl friends. 'A lot of the time I was very resentful. 'But it made me very confident and comfortable in my own company, which is also a big strength.' Raducanu, who officially supplants Katie Boulter as British number one on Monday, planned for next week's Berlin Open to be the next step on her quest to secure seeding at Wimbledon, but required an off-court medical time out before the second set concerning her ongoing back issues. The 22-year-old was the last Briton standing in this new WTA 500 event, the first time women's tennis had been played at Queen's since 1973. 'I'm not overly concerned that it's something serious, but I know it's something that's very annoying and needs proper and careful management,' said Raducanu, who revealed she had been taped up for stability and took some painkillers. Quizzed about whether she was a fitness doubt for Wimbledon, she replied: 'Well, I don't know. Like it's been lingering for the last few weeks, and I have had, like, back issues before. I think it's just a vulnerability of mine. I know I need to take good care of it.' The new British number one confirmed coach Mark Petchey will be able to join her should the Berlin plan go ahead, but does not know if former coach Nick Cavaday, who stepped back in January due to ill health, will also be on the trip after joining her in London this week. Bill Belichick makes rogue Father's Day reference as he dodges UNC questions over Jordon Hudson chaos
University of North Carolina head football coach Bill Belichick just wants to talk about football. Belichick, the 73-year-old coach and eight-time Super Bowl champion, hosted a Q&A session at the Kenan Football Center in Chapel Hill on Tuesday to provide updates on the football program. It came just one day after an article from Brendan Marks of The Athletic - where the reporter did a deep dive into the background of Belichick's 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, only to have Belichick answer the door at the address of the agent listed on her LLC filings. The setting on Tuesday was much less sudden - with Belichick warmly greeting reporters with questions about the football team and its progress. However, he did get asked a pair of questions which addressed his personal life - which the former Patriots coach dodged. When a reporter inquired about the biggest misconception about him and his time at UNC, Belichick replied, 'Yeah, I don't know. Look, I'm really focused on doing my job here at Carolina, to help our football team, and just to get better every day, to stack those days together, training days, preparation days, days out on the field. That's after Belichick recently answered the door at an address listed on Hudson's LLC filings 'And we've done that. And our staff's, again, done a great job of working hard to do that. So that's my big focus. I mean, is there noise out there? 'We've always dealt with that. Really our job is to build the football team also build their individual career. So that's really where we're at.' When asked a follow-up if the interest in his personal life took away from the experience of coming back to coach, Belichick once again dodged - but this time, decided to plug his upcoming book 'The Art of Winning'. 'Again, on some of the noises out there, the book and stuff like that. I mean, it is what it is,' Belichick said. 'That's a personal venture that I entered into when I wasn't in coaching last year, and hopefully that'll be a big purchase on Father's Day.' However, it does come amid a backdrop of confusion about Belichick and Hudson's business dealings. The report from The Athletic explains how Marks tracked down the address for a New England-based lawyer called Joshua Christian, who is the listed resident agent on several of Hudson's LLCs. But when the reporter knocked on the door, Belichick himself answered. The report describes Belichick as wearing North Caroline blue gym shorts and adds: 'His usually stoic expression is decidedly less so, though, replaced instead with something between confusion and unease.' The article continues: 'Belichick tells me he doesn't know a Joshua Christian, who organized his girlfriend's LLCs. So if this isn't Christian's property, I ask, is it Belichick's? Silence. There's the coach everyone knows.' This follows on from a disastrous CBS Sunday Morning interview back in April where Hudson interrupted the interview multiple times - and even caused a half hour delay when she stormed out and expected Belichick to follow. Shortly after the CBS backlash, Hudson competed in a beauty pageant in Maine, finishing third. She appeared to address the intensifying scrutiny placed upon her with a speech to the audience, where Belichick sat alongside her father Heath. 'I'm feeling an immense amount of pride right now,' she said. 'I hope anyone who's watching this finds the strength to push through whatever it is that they're going through, and embodies that hate never wins.'

UNC coach Bill Belichick preparing for season, drowning out 'noise'
June 10 - Bill Belichick said he's put up with outside chatter throughout his career and isn't about to let it derail his mission of rebuilding the football program at North Carolina. "I'm really focused on doing my job here at Carolina, to help our football team, and just to get better every day, to stack those days together, training days, preparation days, days out on the field. And we've done that," he said Tuesday at a news conference in Chapel Hill, N.C. "So that's my big focus. I mean, is there noise out there? We've always dealt with that. Really our job is to build the football team also build their individual career. So that's really where we're at." There has been plenty of noise surrounding the 73-year-old NFL legend since he was hired in December to lead the Tar Heels. Much of it has focused on his personal relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, and he shifted away from talk to about her; all he confirmed is "she doesn't have any role in the UNC football program," as some speculated she did. Instead, he focused on topics such as the Tar Heels' quarterback room, building a team in the transfer portal era and the excitement of working on a college campus. Assembling the team has been an undertaking. Many of the players who were part of coach Mack Brown's (6-7, 3-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) 2024 team are gone. "Lot of new faces since the end of last season, it's been a lot of turnover, almost two thirds of the roster from where it was in January," he said. "A lot of new faces -- but definitely coming together. Training has been good. We made a lot of improvement. It's good team chemistry, a lot of individual improvement. Obviously we got a long way to go, but we're working hard and making progress, and so we're excited about that." Belichick isn't clear yet who will start at quarterback. Max Johnson, entering his sixth college season and at his third school, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opening win against Minnesota in 2024. South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez also is on board. "We've got some freshmen, we've got Max who has got some experience, and Gio -- we'll see how it all plays out honestly," Belichick said. "You know, none of them, with the exception of Max for a handful of plays last year, none of them have really taking any snaps here. So it'll be good to see how all that plays out." Belichick said his team is continuing to evolve, even with the Sept. 1 opener against TCU not far off. He's not quite sure just what he's got. "We'll have a lot better idea in training camp. There were several players that left the team after spring ball, and then we have a lot of new ones, a lot of new faces, both incoming freshmen and players who came from transfers. And so we'll just have to see how all that plays out. I think where we were then, and honestly, where we are even today, is we're at a different spot," he said. "So it'll be interesting to see how it all comes together. We've got a lot of work to do, but it's certainly trending in the right direction." --Field Level Media
