Cannon Resources Announces Major Resource Expansion and Significant Development Momentum at Fisher East Nickel Project
TORONTO and PERTH, Australia, June 18, 2025 /CNW/ - Cannon Resources Pty Ltd ("Cannon" or "the Company"), a Western Australia-based nickel exploration and development company backed by Kinterra Capital Corp. ("Kinterra"), is pleased to announce a significant update to its flagship Fisher East Nickel Project ("Fisher East" or "the Project"). This latest milestone includes a major increase in the Project's Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE), a high-grade discovery at depth, and ongoing permitting and technical progress—all of which position Fisher East as one of Australia's most actionable and strategically important undeveloped nickel sulphide assets.
Fisher East offers a rare blend of high-grade, near-surface mineralisation, simple deposit geometry that supports conventional underground mining methods, and a relatively low initial capex requirement. The Project continues to demonstrate the scale, quality, and development readiness that investors and partners are increasingly prioritizing.
Material Growth in Resource and Grade
Since acquiring the Project in 2023, Cannon has delivered transformative growth. The updated JORC-compliant MRE now stands at 18.0 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.9% nickel. This represents a 250% increase in tonnage from the prior estimate, and a substantial uplift in contained nickel—from 134.1 thousand tonnes to 338.5 thousand tonnes. Importantly, the grade profile has also improved from 1.74% to 1.90%, reinforcing the Project's economic potential and resilience in a range of nickel price environments.
Notes:
Mineral Resources have been classified in accordance with the JORC Code.
All material is classified as either Indicated or Inferred Mineral Resource.
Reporting cut-off grade of 0.9% Ni has been applied.
BD values were calculated using regression formulas based on BD (bulk density) measurements and interpolated.
Material from oxide and transition zones was excluded from the statements.
Rows and columns may not add up exactly due to rounding.
This growth reflects not only the strength of the underlying geology but also Cannon's consistent execution of a targeted and technically rigorous exploration program.
High-Grade Intercepts Extend Musket System at Depth
In addition to the broader resource increase, Cannon has uncovered strong new evidence of depth extension at the Musket deposit. In May 2025, drillhole MFED239—a co-funded drillhole under the Government of Western Australia's Exploration Incentive Scheme—intersected an estimated four metres of massive and disseminated sulphide mineralisation grading approximately 4.0% nickel. Final assays for MFED239 are expected in July 2025. The intercept lies 320 metres down plunge of the current Musket resource model and offers compelling indications of both continuity and grade uplift at depth.
A downhole electromagnetic (DHEM) survey conducted on the hole identified a strong off-hole conductor both up and down plunge, suggesting even greater potential for continued growth within the deeper portions of the Musket system. DHEM has been very successful at Fisher East in identifying conductors that have mineralisation, and additional drilling is being planned.
"These results point to a larger and more robust mineral system than previously defined," said Chris O'Brien, Vice President and Project Director at Cannon. "We're seeing increasing grade with depth, strong geophysical continuity, and room to grow well beyond the current model. These fundamentals will support long-term value."
Mineable, Resilient, and Commercially Attractive
Fisher East includes multiple zones grading above 2.0% nickel, allowing for flexible mine sequencing and margin protection in volatile nickel price cycles. Its shallow depth and straightforward mineralogy contribute to a low capital intensity profile.
In a market where clean, economic, and secure nickel supply is becoming increasingly scarce, Fisher East offers distinct advantages, including jurisdiction, scalability, and potential early value generation.
Strategic Outlook: Path to Development
With two major resource updates completed in under two years, a high-grade extension emerging at depth, and permitting and technical studies well underway, Cannon is entering the next phase of value creation. The Company has now initiated engagement with potential offtake partners and financing partners.
"Our vision is to build a modern, resilient, nickel supply chain anchored in Tier-1 jurisdictions," said Cheryl Brandon, Co-Managing Partner at Kinterra. "Fisher East embodies the kind of high-grade, technically sound, and commercially viable project the market needs—and we're excited to support Cannon as it moves forward."
Cannon will continue to release updates as assays for recent drillholes are received and technical milestones are achieved. A QA/QC summary for this release will be included in the upcoming technical appendix following final laboratory confirmation of results.

Brokenhead voters reject Sio Silica sand mine proposal
Brokenhead Ojibway Nation has rejected a partnership with sand-mining company Sio Silica, turning down a deal projected to generate up to $20 million in annual revenue for the reserve. In a one-week referendum, 181 band members voted against working with the Alberta-based company, while 129 voted in favour. 'We would like to thank everyone who participated in the recent referendum, and our council respects the decision and will proceed in the direction provided by our members,' Brokenhead's chief and council said in a Facebook post. Brokenhead member Taylor Galvin, a vocal critic of the proposed partnership, said she is 'on Cloud Nine.' She organized a demonstration against the mining project on Friday morning, the final day of voting. 'There's been a lot of work and advocacy going on, building up to this day.' Sio Silica is seeking provincial approval for mining operations in southeastern Manitoba. Its proposal includes drilling thousands of wells to extract silica sand, a critical mineral used to develop a variety of goods and electronics. The proposed mine does not fall on Brokenhead lands, but Sio Silica sought support from the First Nation in exchange for five per cent of the project's annual profits and a promise of jobs and training opportunities. In a statement, Sio Silica president Carla Devlin said her company respects the community's decision but noted 'it is difficult to see how widespread misinformation influenced' conversation about the issue. 'Our project is built on science, rigorous environmental oversight and a commitment to share its benefits with First Nations. This is an opportunity to position Manitoba as leaders in critical minerals, proving that the economy and the environment are not opposing forces,' Devlin said. 'The mining industry needs help from all stakeholders to ensure the public debate is based on facts, not fear, and to remind people that mining is essential to daily life.' Critics of the plan have raised concerns about the project's potential impact on an underground aquifer, fearing operations could compromise its geological stability and impact water quality. Manitoba's Clean Environment Commission reviewed the project and produced a report in 2023 that flagged similar concerns. The NDP government denied Sio Silica's environmental licences in February 2024, saying the risks outweighed potential benefits. Devlin told the Free Press last week that Sio Silica intends to reapply for its licence before the end of the month. She said Friday that the company remains committed to that goal, and to pursuing partnerships in which Indigenous communities benefit from the project. About 60 people gathered in protest outside the Private Thomas Chief Memorial Centre in Brokenhead on Friday, where band members were able to vote in-person before the referendum closed. Voting started online Aug. 1. Galvinc riticized the short voting window, noting it launched ahead of a long weekend and the community's annual Treaty Days celebration. Brokenhead officials pushed back against her assessment in a statement published on the band website this week. 'The vote was scheduled at a time when most members are available and gathered in (the) community to ensure maximum participation and transparency,' it said. The statement said council members were not taking a position on the referendum and were seeking input from members before continued talks with Sio Silica. 'This is why we are holding a referendum — to allow all eligible community members to have their say and determine the direction collectively,' it said. GM and Hyundai team up to cut costs, develop five new vehicles
DETROIT/SEOUL: General Motors and Hyundai Motor have announced plans to co-develop five new vehicles, aiming to cut costs and strengthen their position in global markets where Chinese electric vehicle makers are gaining ground. Four of the planned models, a compact SUV, car, pickup, and a mid-size pickup, are set for launch in Central and South America in 2028 and will support both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. The companies did not specify production locations but expect to manufacture at least 800,000 vehicles annually once operating at full capacity. The move is seen as a response to growing competition from Chinese EV brands in Latin America, though some analysts expressed skepticism about its effectiveness. "Even if they sell those new models in South America, it's hard to beat Chinese competitors which already are leading in the electric-vehicle market with low prices," said An Hyung-jin, chief investment officer at Seoul-based Billionfold Asset Management. "Hyundai might be able to learn from GM about how to build pickup trucks, but it would take some time to generate earnings," he added. In addition to the passenger vehicles, GM and Hyundai plan to co-develop an electric commercial van in the U.S. as early as 2028. "The partnership itself is a win-win strategy, since GM can learn the hybrid technology from Hyundai while Hyundai can use the relationship with GM as leverage for trade negotiations with the United States," said Teddi Kim, head of auto research firm Mirae-Mobility Research & Services. The announcement follows last week's U.S.-South Korea agreement to impose a 15 percent tariff on American imports from South Korea, including vehicles. Hyundai Motor shares rose 0.7 percent following the news, slightly outperforming the broader market. The deal adds to a recent flurry of partnerships between South Korean and U.S. firms, including Samsung's chip deals with Tesla and Apple, and LG Energy Solution's battery pact with Tesla. Reuters previously reported in March that Hyundai and GM were nearing a deal to collaborate on commercial vans and pickups. The agreement marks Hyundai's first major vehicle development partnership. For GM, it comes after a string of discontinued joint projects, including the 2023 cancellation of a US$5 billion EV partnership with Honda. Legacy automakers are facing pressure to cut costs as Chinese rivals flood global markets with high-tech, low-cost electric vehicles. Partnerships are increasingly seen as a way to share development burdens and stay competitive, especially as global tariffs add billions in costs across the supply chain.
