Congress shouldn't allow BJP to usurp saffron colour, says Prithviraj Chavan amid ‘saffron terror' charges

Appealing to his own party leaders to not term terror as 'saffron terror', former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan on Friday (August 1, 2025) said that the Congress should not let the BJP usurp saffron colour. '14 Crore Maharashtrians revere saffron, not because of BJP, but because of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,' he told The Hindu. Hitting back at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who said there never was any Hindutva or saffron terror, he asked, 'Who was Nathuram Godse then? Who killed Comrade Pansare or Narendra Dabholkar? While terror has no colour, acts of terror need to be recognised. What is the colour of terror in Manipur?' He said that the current government had failed to give justice to the victims of terror attacks. 'There have been acquittals in the 7/11 train blasts and in Malegaon blast. What will you tell the victims? Who did it? Someone has to be accountable. The government should go in appeal against both the orders. Where is justice otherwise?' he asked. Mr Chavan said that as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra before 2014, he had sent a proposal to the Centre to ban Sanatan Sanstha under the stringent UAPA. ATS policeman's statement questioned He questioned the timing and the content of a former policeman of Maharashtra Police who has claimed that he was asked to arrest Mohan Bhagwat after the Malegaon blasts. 'How can you trust a former inspector? Can an inspector be privy to such high level discussions? What is the basis of his statement? Also, this is not the first time he has said it. When Fadnavis became the CM in 2014, why didn't he say anything about it?' he asked, calling the timing of the statement conspicuous.

Telangana aims for 50% green cover by 2047 in guv's climate push

1 2 Hyderabad: In a strong push for climate action, Telangana governor Jishnu Dev Varma has called for a focused three-pronged strategy to tackle climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs). The governor emphasised that such an approach would deliver significant benefits to the economy, the environment, and society at large. Echoing the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has united the global community on climate action and continues to lead efforts both domestically and internationally, the governor stressed the urgent need for coordinated action across key sectors. Jishnu Dev Varma underscored the importance of involving all relevant departments, including energy, transport, buildings, rural and urban development, industry, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), in advancing renewable energy and accelerating energy efficiency initiatives. "Energy efficiency alone can contribute over 40% in mitigating climate change impacts," he noted. The governor also commended the concerted efforts of the ministry of power, particularly through the bureau of energy efficiency (BEE) and energy efficiency services (EESL), as well as the ministry of environment and climate change, for their ongoing support to state govts in deploying global best practices and clean technologies. He specifically praised Telangana's initiatives to engage women in the adoption of solar energy. As part of ongoing outreach efforts, A Chandra Sekhara Reddy, southern regional media adviser to the BEE, along with senior officers from EESL, briefed the governor on key developments in the field of energy efficiency. The standards & labelling (S&L) programme, which accounts for 60% of India's energy efficiency-related CO₂ reductions, is a vital component of India's commitment to cut one billion tonnes of emissions by 2030. Recognising the importance of institutional energy leadership, the governor recommended that EESL conduct a comprehensive energy audit at Raj Bhavan and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, to assess the feasibility of transforming them into model energy-efficient campuses. He urged close coordination with the energy development agency for effective implementation.

Telangana Dy CM dedicates 1st unit of Yadadri Thermal Power Plant

Nalgonda, Aug 1 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu said the 4,000 MW Yadadri Thermal Power Plant will be fully dedicated to the nation by January next year. Speaking after dedicating the first 800 MW unit to the nation on Friday and laying the foundation stone for an integrated township at the project site, to be developed at a cost of Rs 970 crore, Bhatti Vikramarka termed the event 'historic' for meeting the state's power needs. He said the project was delayed for nearly two years due to the previous government's failure to secure environmental clearances, which increased costs significantly. 'After the present Congress government came to power, clearances were obtained in just two months, and two units totaling 1,600 MW were completed by setting weekly and monthly targets,' he explained. The Deputy CM announced that employees working at the remote site would be provided with world-class educational institutions, corporate-level medical facilities, and local welfare measures. Free education and healthcare will also be extended to local residents who cooperated in the project's construction, along with ambulance services and road development. He assured that those who gave up land for the project would receive jobs by August 15 and full rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) benefits. Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy praised Bhatti Vikramarka for his dynamic supervision, stating that the Yadadri project, once stalled, is now progressing rapidly and will benefit the state's power supply within two years.
