NMMC unveils eco-friendly tricolour as part of e-waste recyclothon in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai: In a remarkable step towards sustainability, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has unveiled an eco-friendly tricolour sign crafted entirely from recycled plastic bottle lids. This initiative, part of the larger Navi Mumbai Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon, is a collaboration with the NGO Project Mumbai and aims to inspire citizens to reduce plastic usage and contribute to a cleaner, greener city. The tricolour board, created from 2,460 recycled plastic lids, was inaugurated by NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde on Independence Day. The board will be prominently displayed at the Municipal Headquarters, serving as a daily reminder of the city's commitment to plastic-free living for all visitors. This creative project is part of the 'Gharoghari Tiranga Gharoghari Swachhta' campaign, which not only celebrates national pride but also highlights the importance of recycling and environmental responsibility, said Shinde. Project Mumbai has been actively raising awareness about plastic and e-waste recycling across housing societies, colonies, corporate groups, and educational institutions. "Plastic and e-waste collection drives have already begun, with over 250 societies registered in the first phase, engaging nearly two lakh citizens. NMMC's goal is to instil the habit of reducing and recycling plastic waste among residents, ultimately establishing Navi Mumbai as a plastic-free and beautiful city," said Shinde. He expressed confidence in the citizens' willingness to actively participate in this green movement, emphasising the collective effort required for lasting change. "This innovative tricolour sign stands as a symbol of environmental consciousness and civic pride, encouraging everyone to adopt sustainable practices for a better future. We have partnered with NGO Project Mumbai by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to promote the elimination of harmful plastic from daily use. The initiative focused on recycling plastic in accordance with the 3-R (reduce, recycle, reuse) principles," said Shinde. The schools, School No 93, CBSE School Seawood Sector 50, and School No 94, Koparkhairane Sector 11, were inaugurated on Aug 4, 2018, to provide quality English medium education to lower and lower middle-class students in Navi Mumbai civic area. The recognition marks a significant achievement for the NMMC Education Department. Municipal commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, along with his team, played pivotal roles in securing this status, said an official from the education department of NMMC. DPS, NRI, TS Chanakya Wetlands Safe Under Amended NMMC Development Plan

Navi Mumbai: Environmental activists are pleased that three significant wetlands—DPS Flamingo Lake, NRI, and TS Chanakya water bodies at Nerul in Navi Mumbai—remain protected according to the revised Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) draft Development Plan. These wetlands are mentioned in the govt gazette, which is out inviting suggestions and objections before the final approval. The previous draft designated these three locations as water bodies in blue. However, CIDCO had different plans, marking DPS Lake for development, NRI Waterbody for a golf course, and TS Chanakya wetland as a residential area. The state urban development department's recent notification states that suggestions and objections must be submitted by August 23. NatConnect Foundation has initiated a campaign to gather suggestions supporting the wetland status of these crucial water bodies, whilst welcoming the amendments to secure final govt approval. Navi Mumbai spans across Thane and Raigad districts. NMMC oversees the Thane district portion from Dighe to Belapur. Environmentalists opposed CIDCO's decision to retain management of these wetlands whilst transferring other lands to NMMC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to Ease Knee Pain Without Injections or Side Effects Learn More Undo The state govt has designated DPS Flamingo Lake as a Conservation Reserve, with the gazette order pending. NatConnect Director B N Kumar welcomed the protection of the three major wetlands. He urged the state govt to officially designate them as wetlands, including Lotus Lake at Sector-27, Nerul, which CIDCO marked as Plot-2 for residential development. Another activist, Rekha Sankhla, who also fought for the wetland status of these water bodies, said half the battle is won and the final assault is yet to come. These wetlands, listed in the National Wetland Inventory Atlas, have been documented by the National Centre for Coastal Management (NCSCM) as per State Environment Department requirements. Their notification is pending, according to information obtained through the RTI Act. NMMC proposed maintaining these wetlands as flamingo habitats and eco-tourism sites, but CIDCO hasn't responded. The amendments maintain the ongoing real estate development at Sector-60, adjacent to the NRI wetland, as a residential zone. The Bombay High Court nullified the residential-cum-commercial project and golf course in November 2018, but CIDCO's appeal in the Supreme Court awaits hearing.
