'Juvenile and awful': ABC presenter Nate Byrne who suffered on-air panic attack reveals cruel letter from 'disappointed' viewer

Sky News AU2 days ago
ABC presenter Nate Byrne has revealed the contents of cruel fan mail he received after unveiling his new haircut on-air this month.
Byrne, who presents the morning weather for the public broadcaster, revealed he received a letter from a fan who described his hairstyle as 'juvenile and awful'.
He sported a fresh edgy look with a fade on the sides of his head with gel through the top.
Taking to Instagram, Byrne shared a photo of a note he received on August 13 from the unnamed viewer with the subheading simply reading, 'Haircut'.
'Good morning Nate,' it began.
'Whilst I respect your right to have your hair styled as you wish, I am exercising my right to tell you it looks juvenile and awful.
'I'll return to ABC Breakfast once it grows out.
'Yours sincerely – signed - name redacted - (Disappointed viewer).'
Byrne took the criticism in good humour asking his followers if anyone has suggestions for his next haircut.
'Mail's in! Proof that the art of letter-writing isn't dead! Anyone have any suggestions for my next do?' he said.
The post attracted messages of support from fellow TV stars.
Fellow colleague, ABC Breakfast TV presenter James Glenday said: 'Never change Nate! We can have some fun with this. And anyway, it's better to be looked over than overlooked?'
MasterChef judge Poh Ling Yeow wrote, 'Can u please make it extra 'juvenile'? Nate I used to get hate mail about my 'fake' laugh. ABC viewers.'
Dancing With The Stars judge Todd McKenney added, 'This has made my day. I thought I was the only one to get this sort of feedback! You always rock your look. Don't touch one strand!'
Meanwhile, fans rallied around Byrne and defended his new hairstyle.
'Dear Disappointed Viewer, your opinion is important, just not to anyone here. Yours sincerely, 68-year-old bald guy,' commented one fan.
'Omg how ridiculous. Nate you are AMAZING, a beautiful human, who is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, clearly love your job, your passion lights up the screen. We LOVE YOU. Do not change, you are a very rare treasure. Xxxx' another said.
'I actually said to my dad the other morning I noticed you'd had a haircut. I said to him if I was a gay man you'd be my type. Nate, you're hot,' a third added.
Byrne who has been presenting ABC's morning program since 2017 previously was applauded by viewers for how he handled an on-air panic attack in August last year.
The panic attack came as he was reading Queensland's weather forecast.
'I'm actually going to need to stop for a second,' he said suddenly, before mentioning the condition which affects him.
'Some of you may know that I occasionally get affected by some panic attacks, and actually that's happening right now."
He then asked to hand the broadcast back to co-presenters Lisa Millar and Michael Rowland.
Millar agreed and took the opportunity to bring up a piece Byrne wrote in 2022 about suffering panic attacks on-air.
'Nate wrote a great piece on the ABC online website about this and I reckon we might re-up it, put it on our socials, you can have a bit of a read,' she said.
'The response when he first wrote about it and spoke about it was that everyone said, 'Oh thank god, Nate's not perfect, we thought he was perfect, but actually he's now sharing something'.'

ABC's brush with bad timing in screening Al Muderis rerun

'The episode of Anh's Brush with Fame featuring Munjed Al Muderis was made in 2018,' an ABC spokesman said on Thursday evening. 'In light of the Federal Court's recent judgment, the ABC has taken the decision to remove the episode from ABC iview and the broadcast rotation.' Biles flies with the Hawks It's an Australian tradition that visiting celebrities are forced to choose an AFL team and pose in their footy jumper. Richmond once claimed Indian cricket Virat Kohli, while British singer Robbie Williams ended up with Carlton (and the key to Melbourne). Hollywood A-lister Jeff Goldblum was once photographed at an NRL game wearing a Rabbitohs cap. Now, celebrated gymnast Simone Biles has joined prime minister Anthony Albanese, swimmer Ariarne Titmus and former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett as a Hawk. Biles has won a record 11 Olympic medals. So why was arguably the greatest gymnast of all time (height 1.42 metres) posing in Twins -style pics with 1.91-metre-tall Hawthorn star Will Day and a personalised brown and yellow jumper? Biles is visiting Australia for the self-described 'property industry event of 2025', REA Group's Ready25 event in Sydney's Royal Randwick. A Hawthorn rep tells CBD that Day was invited to the conference and presented Biles with the Hawks' 2025 Indigenous guernsey. Asked if Biles was a fan, a club spokesman said he would 'let the photo do the talking'. Real estate is one of the few industries that can afford to bring out celebrities to talk wellbeing, authenticity and other buzzwords. Former US vice president and presidential candidate Kamala Harris recently shot the breeze at a real estate conference on the Gold Coast. Loading Golden ticket It's been dubbed Canberra Coachella; for three days a curious assortment of boffins, bureaucrats, business leaders and cabinet ministers have crammed the Parliament House Cabinet Room for the Economic Reform Roundtable. Sadly, journalists weren't welcome at the talkfest but, judging from the leaks, some interactions were predictable. Participants reported host and federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers had a 'fiery exchange' with his shadow, Ted O'Brien, over budget policy. Chalmers apparently accused O'Brien of acting like it was parliamentary question time. Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, who was in the room at the time, played down the tiff by telling the ABC 'we are pretty used to the hustle and bustle and to and fro of politics. It was just an interaction like that.' But such a tedious political interruption does remind CBD of the legendary scene from the movie Billy Madison when a school principal tells a student played by Adam Sandler that 'everyone in this room is now dumber' for listening to him. Regardless of any policy outcomes, the roundtable has been a first-rate networking opportunity. Among the invitees were Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock, tech billionaire Scott Farquhar and Commonwealth Bank boss Matt Comyn. But our favourite participant was independent economist Chris Richardson, who added some colour to the deliberations on productivity, regulatory reform and budget sustainability. When Richardson first received a coveted invitation to the roundtable, he compared it to one of the golden tickets to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. He then posted a photo on his way to Canberra – from a Murrays bus – and reframed the roundtable as Canberra Glastonbury rather than Coachella because 'it's cold, wet and muddy, and a few of the stars on stage are ageing (like me)'. Richardson even let us in on his roundtable playlist for the bus trip, including Spandau Ballet's Gold, while reading Productivity Commission reports. We haven't heard whether any other round-tablers, say Bullock, Farquhar or Comyn, caught the bus. Move over NIMBY and YIMBY Move over ' skibidi toilet ', 'delulu', 'trad wife' and the other new words added to this year's Cambridge Dictionary. When it comes to housing, we've all heard of NIMBYs (not in my backyard) and their nemesis, YIMBYs (yes in my backyard). Now there's another housing-based acronym on the block. It's 'TIMBYs', and it stands for 'thoughtfully in my backyard'. TIMBY is being promoted by the good people of the National Trust of Australia's Victorian branch and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. They say TIMBY is a 'balanced, inclusive approach that delivers more housing while respecting heritage, character, and community values'. This all sounds very sensible.

Jack White blasts 'orange grifter' Donald Trump

Jack White has branded Donald Trump an "orange grifter". The former White Stripes frontman was dismissed as a "washed-up, has-been loser" by White House communications director Steven Cheung on Wednesday (20.08.25) after he mocked the decor of the presidential residence since the 79-year-old businessman returned to office, and he's now offered a savage response, in which he accused the Commander-in-Chief of "masquerading as a human being" who has done little to improve people's lives. In a lengthy statement on Instagram, he wrote: "Here's my opinion, trump is masquerading as a human being. "He's masquerading as a christian, as a leader, as a person with actual empathy. He's been masquerading as a businessman for decades as nothing he's involved in has prospered except by using other people's money to find loophole after loophole and grift after grift... "I have 'ample time on (my) hands'? That orange grifter has spent more tax payer money cheating at golf than helping ANYONE in the country. Improve. Anything. "There is no progress with him, only smoke and mirrors and tax breaks for the ultra wealthy.' The Steady As She Goes hitmaker went on to brand Trump a 'conman', a 'low life fascist' and a 'professional golf cheat' before admitting he was proud to be ridiculed by the 'actual White House'. He wrote: 'Being insulted by the actual White House that this particular conman leads is like a badge of honor to me, because anyone who trump supports and likes is a villain who gives nothing to their fellow man, only takes what can benefit themselves. (sic)' He also ridiculed the fact he has frequently criticised the president in the past but this was the first time he had had a direct response. He wrote: "It was the f****** DECOR OF THE OVAL OFFICE remarks I made that got them to respond with insults. "How petty and pathetic and thin skinned could this administration get?" Jack's comments came in the wake of Steven hitting out at him for disrespecting "the splendor and significance" of the Oval Office. He said: "Jack White is a washed up, has-been loser posting drivel on social media because he clearly has ample time on his hands due to his stalled career. "It's apparent he's been masquerading as a real artist, because he fails to appreciate, and quite frankly disrespects, the splendor and significance of the Oval Office inside of 'The People's House.'" The row began when Jack shared a photo of Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office earlier this week. He captioned the post: "Look at how disgusting trump has transformed the historic White House. It's now a vulgar, gold leafed and gaudy, professional wrestler's dressing room. Can't wait for the UFC match on the front lawn too, he's almost fully achieved the movie "Idiocracy". "Look at his disgusting taste, would you even buy a used car from this conman, let alone give him the nuclear codes? A gold plated trump bible would look perfect up on that mantle with a pair of trump shoes on either side wouldn't it? "What an embarrassment to American history. Also pictured in this photograph, a REAL leader of a nation in a black suit.(sic)" The 50-year-old musician previously expressed his outrage after Trump used the White Stripes' Seven Nation Army in a 2024 campaign video. He wrote at the time: "Don't even think about using my music you fascists. Law suit coming from my lawyers about this (to add to your 5 thousand others.)" And in 2023, he hit out at celebrities including Mark Wahberg and Mel Gibson for taking part in a meet-and-greet with the former Apprentice Star. He posted: "Anybody who 'normalizes' or treats this disgusting fascist, racist, con man, disgusting piece of s*** Trump with any level of respect is ALSO disgusting in my book.(sic)"
