Golden joy for Meg Harris as Aussie teammate denied history in world record drama

Meg Harris' gamble to focus all her energy on the 50m freestyle has paid off after the Aussie claimed the first individual swimming world championships gold of her career. Harris' incredible display came as Mollie O'Callaghan was denied a record-breaking 12th gold at the worlds in Singapore after Team USA broke the world record in the women's 4x100m medley final. Harris' silver medal at the Paris Games was one of the great underdog stories of last year's Olympics, but she went one better in Singapore after winning the women's 50m freestyle final in 24.02 seconds. Harris touched in first ahead of Chinese pair Qingfeng Wu (24.26s) and Yujie Cheng (24.28s) to claim the first world title of her career, after shifting her focus from the 100m freestyle to become a one-lap specialist. The 23-year-old pulled out of the 100m freestyle after swimming the heat at the national trials. And Harris even had to be convinced by Australia's coaches to swim in the 4x100m freestyle relay on the opening night of the worlds, where she helped the Aussie team win gold. Harris' focus on the 50m free was a huge risk, considering she'd already won two Olympic golds and five at the world titles as part of Australia's dominant relay teams. But the decision paid off handsomely for Harris in Singapore as she emulated men's sprint specialist Cameron McEvoy, to give Australia golds in both 50m freestyle events. 'I still don't have the words to process this, but this is a dream,' Harris said. 'I felt really good the first 15m and that's been my weakness so far. I knew if I got that right I just had to hold on.' Victory also saw Harris become Australia's first female 50m freestyle world champion since Bronte Campbell in 2015. O'Callaghan is tied with Ian Thorpe on a national record 11 gold medals at the worlds but she was denied a historic 12th as the powerful American team broke the world record in the relay final. Team USA combined superbly to set a new world benchmark of three minutes 49.34 seconds, with the Dolphins' team of Kaylee McKeown, Ella Ramsay, Alex Perkins and O'Callaghan taking silver in the last race of the championships. It saw Australia finish the meet second on the standings with eight gold, six silver and six bronze, behind the formidable USA (nine, 11, nine). Australia's Jenna Forrester also picked up a silver medal for the green and gold on the final night of competition after finishing second behind Summer McIntosh in the women's 400m medley final. Victory saw the Canadian megastar sign off her incredible campaign with four gold medals in Singapore. Sam Short's illness-plagued meet finished with fourth place in the men's 1500m, while Isaac Cooper was seventh in the men's 50m backstroke and Brendon Smith came last in the men's 400m medley. O'Callaghan was Australia's most successful swimmer of the meet with three gold medals and two silvers, while backstroke queen McKeown repeated her feat from the Paris Games with a 100-200m backstroke golden double. with AAP

Noah Lyles, Kenny Bednarek get physical after 200-meter final at U.S. Outdoor Championships

Noah Lyles ran Kenny Bednarek down, because of course he did. That's what Lyles did. Bednarek took a big early lead in the U.S. Outdoor Championships final of the men's 200 meters. Lyles caught him by the line. And if that wasn't enough action, the pair of American stars provided a postscript. Lyles appeared to stumble over Bednarek after they both crossed the finish line. That prompted a look back from Lyles and a shove from Bednarek. They nearly went their separate ways, but then Bednarek wanted to offer a handshake to Lyles, a peace offering. Lyles took a few seconds, then gave a subdued handshake as the pair exchanged a few more words. Lyles was quick: "No comment." Bednarek had more to say, via Theo Kahler of Runner World: "Noah's gonna be Noah. If you want to stare me down, that's fine. I ran five rounds, he was fresh. We can line up again when we're both fresh, and I'm very confident I can beat him." Lyles had byes during the competition thanks to his past victories. Bednarek continued: "What he said doesn't matter. It's just what he did. It's unsportsmanlike s---, and I don't deal with that." And he finished with a prediction: "Next time we line it up, I'm gonna win." The world championships are in mid-September in Tokyo. The pair will both want to win for the United States, of course, but there'll be a little more juice there, too. Bring the popcorn. "He said he wanted us to have a good time" - Cousins recalls Kobe buying him and PG two large bottles of Aces Spades in Las Vegas

"He said he wanted us to have a good time" - Cousins recalls Kobe buying him and PG two large bottles of Aces Spades in Las Vegas originally appeared on Basketball Network. In 2012, DeMarcus Cousins was one of the players named to the USA Basketball Select Team, which was tasked to help prepare the 2012 U.S. men's basketball team for the London Olympics. As with the previous Team USA preparations, the training camp was held at the UNLV Campus in Las Vegas. Looking to take advantage of the fact that he was already there, Boogie wanted to have a taste of the bright lights of Sin City, so one night, he and fellow 2010 draftee Paul George decided to check out the bustling Las Vegas nightlife. Compliments from the Black Mamba While in one of the clubs, Cousins said they saw Kobe Bryant, who was a member of the 2012 Dream Team, arrive at the scene and draw all the attention. However, while everybody there wanted to chat with Kobe, the Los Angeles Lakers star approached their table when he noticed him and PG sitting there. "He was like, 'Y'all young boys be safe. Have a good time. Be smart.' Those are his exact words. So we dap up, he pulls up, he kind of leaves the club. So maybe 15 minutes after that, we got two magnum bottles of Ace of Spades pulling up to the table," said Boogie. "We just like, 'Whoa' because it's just me and PG. There's nobody. So the bottles come in, and we like, 'Nah, hell no. That ain't ours.' Them bottles are probably running about 15 grand. I'm like, 'No, we ain't order that.' They were like, 'No, this is from Kobe. He said he wanted to make sure you had a good time.' I was just like, 'Damn,' and so obviously, the night went on and we had a blast," he also footed Parsons's $22K bill at the club DeMarcus' best memory of Kobe's generosity is similar to Chandler Parsons' experience with Bryant's magnanimity. During an appearance on the "All the Smoke" podcast three years ago, Parsons told the story of how he and his entire Houston Rockets team spent over $20K at the exclusive Supper Club in Los Angeles after a game against the Lakers where KB dropped 40 on them. "2 AM rolls around, and this waitress comes to me with the check, and I am like, oh s—t. I open it, and it's like $22,000, and at this point, I am sick, I can't do that; this card is going to bounce. This chick looks at me, hands me a pen, and says, sign for Mr. Bryant, and I am like, what? I signed Kobe Bryant on a $22,000 club bill, and everybody was saying how this dude is going to go after me, but this dude was cool as f—k; he was awesome," said Parsons. Bryant was often looked at as antisocial and a leader who was extremely hard on his teammates. However, as Cousins and Parsons proved, KB might have been a slave-driver on the basketball court, but he was one of the coolest NBA superstars when it came to having fun after basketball and was always a gracious host, even to his rivals on the story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 2, 2025, where it first appeared.
