Liam Payne's $50 million fortune goes to one person after singer died without a will

News.com.au08-05-2025
Liam Payne's legacy has been revealed after the One Direction star died without writing a will – leaving behind $50.21 million.
The One Direction singer tragically passed away in October last year at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
Court documents obtained by The Sun show Payne left $59 million, which after expenses and debts were paid saw the figure reduced by $9 million.
The singer died intestate, which means he didn't leave a will stating what should be done with his money.
However, documents show the court has granted power of administration of his estate to Cheryl Tweedy, his former partner and mother of his eight-year-old son Bear.
Also named as an administrator is top music lawyer Richard Bray, partner in a London-based legal firm.
Under UK's rules of intestacy, it's likely that the money will be placed in trust for Liam's son, while his girlfriend at the time of his death, Kate Cassidy, will receive nothing as they were not married or in a civil partnership.
This comes after the singer's haunting final words were revealed by his girlfriend Kate, six months after his death.
The US influencer, 25, has been candidly documenting her grief since the tragic event in interviews and on social media.
She had been with him until two days before his passing.
In an appearance on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast, heartbroken Kate shared the comfort she finds in their final exchange.
Recalling the moment she left Buenos Aires to return to their home in Florida, Kate described the deeply emotional goodbye the couple shared.
'I remember sitting there with him and I was going on and on and on about how much I love him,' she said.
'And he laughed and interrupted me and was like: 'Kate you're gonna miss your flight, your car is in the driveway.''
Liam then added, 'You're acting like this is the last time you are ever gonna see me again.'
At the time, Kate said she laughed, unaware of what was to come.
'But to look back in time and know that was the last time I was ever gonna see him again is just so chilling,' she continued.
'I am so blessed that it was that heartfelt goodbye. Our last goodbye – I wouldn't have wanted it to be any differently. I am so glad we had that beautiful time together and I wouldn't change that.'
Liam is survived by his son Bear, who he welcomed with singer Cheryl in March 2017 after they had been dating for a year.
When they split the following year, Liam wrote: 'We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world.'
He was co-parenting with the former X Factor judge, whom he met on the hit ITV1 talent show, and said he saw his son up to two to three times a week.
Liam walked hand-in-hand with his son in a final post with the lad he had once described as a 'mini me'.
In the video, the singer ruffled his boy's hair and, alongside a bear and a teary-eyes emoji, he wrote, 'Bear is so tall.'
In a separate video in August, he said, 'He's getting so big now. He's a big boy and he looks like a mini me. As if we needed any more me in the world.'
Meanwhile, in and interview with People in 2022, Liam gushed: 'I make sure when I see him, he has 100 per cent of my time and I'm not d***ing around.
'I like to give him those moments and it's important.
'He needs his dad in his life and I'm happy he looks at me like a superhero. I'm hoping to keep it that way.'
This comes as Liam's tragic finals hours before he fell to his death were released in court documents earlier this month.
Rogelio 'Roger' Nores and two staff members at the hotel had been charged with manslaughter but were cleared, it was revealed in February.
Liam James Payne was born August 29, 1993, and was an English singer and songwriter.
He shot to fame as a member of the global boyband phenomenon One Direction.
Liam made his debut as a singer when he auditioned for The X Facto r in 2008.
After being eliminated as a solo artist he auditioned again in 2010 and was put into a group with four other contestants to form One Direction.
The band went on to sell 70 million records worldwide, making them one of the most successful boybands of all time.
They group parted ways in 2015, when they went on a hiatus.
Liam has amassed his fortune through being in One Direction, his solo career and touring.

Taylor Swift set to take aim at Donald Trump on new album as she reveals truth about ‘dark chapters' in her life

Taylor Swift is reportedly planning to use her new album to silence critics who claimed her career has gone 'broke' since she 'went woke'. Swift broke the internet on Tuesday when she shocked the world by announcing her new album The Life of A Showgirl. And now details are slowly emerging about the star's new record, with an insider telling Daily Mail that the album could be one of her most personal yet while taking aim at her right-wing critics. Despite being 'feel good', it's believed the album will also be used to address some of the 'darkest chapters' in her life. 'Some of the songs sound dramatic in terms of the instrumental, but the lyrical content on a few is romantic,' a source revealed of the new music. 'It is absolutely inspired by Travis. Being loved by him has really helped her overcome some dark chapters in her life. The insider added: 'He is proof that there are kind men out there with good hearts and fans will hear how happy she is in the songs.' When it comes to Blake Lively, the insider added: 'She did write about Blake last year but it's no longer the focus of the album because she wanted it to be positive and feel-good.' It comes after Travis Kelce gave a rare glimpse into his romance with Swift amid frenzied excitement over her album announcement. The NFL star appeared on the cover of GQ on Tuesday, opening up in the accompanying interview about how the pair first fell in love. 'Whenever I'm with her, it feels like we're just regular people,' Kelce, who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, said. 'When there is not a camera on us, we're just two people that are in love. 'It can be perceived as something else because of how much it is talked about, and how much we are tracked whenever we do go out. 'But I would say that it's as normal of … it happened very organically, even though from a media standpoint it was being tracked. It still happened very organically.' Kelce added that he and Swift, both 35, 'fell in love just based off the people we were sitting in a room together with'. 'We are two fun-loving people who have the morals to appreciate everyone for who they are,' he said. 'We share all those values. It kind of just took the f**k off.'

‘Shouldn't you be at work?': Surfer reveals he is ‘working from home'

'Shouldn't you be at work?' It's the question pretty much anyone who has scored a day off during the work week has felt like asking at one point or another. You might think having a free midweek day is the perfect opportunity to visit somewhere you would usually avoid because of weekend crowds. But then you arrive only to discover it is still packed, making you wonder, don't any of these people have jobs? This is exactly how Zalo, a 28-year-old expat living on the Gold Coast, felt when he recently had the opportunity to head down to the beach during the work week. So, he decided to ask the question. Walking up to a surfer who had just gotten out of the water, Zalo asked: 'It's 11am on a weekday and you are surfing. Shouldn't you be at work?' The man revealed he was 'working from home' that day, confirming he was on the clock and 'getting paid'. Zalo, who is originally from Argentina, has always been 'obsessed' with the ocean, taking any opportunity he can to get out on the water 'The idea for the video came from something I do all the time. Whenever I get a break at work, I check the surf cams to see where I'll paddle out later and, no matter the time, there's always a crew out there surfing,' he told 'It made me wonder who are these people? How are they living this life while the rest of us are stuck working?' Zalo happened to have a day of annual leave booked in, so he went to the beach to ask the question he, and everyone else, wanted answered. When he gets the chance to head down to the water midweek, he said the other people he meets are often FIFO workers, retired or people who work for themselves. Zalo loves seeing people out enjoying themselves during the week and is all for 'questioning the 9-5' and 'designing a lifestyle that fits you'. 'That's what I want to share through my videos and maybe get a few laughs along the way,' he said. Speaking to recruitment specialist and author of Earning Power, Roxanne Calder, said the 9-5 model was 'broken long before we started working from our dining room tables'. She said a remote worker stepping out during their work day isn't automatically a problem, with issues arising if doing so causes them to not deliver on their responsibilities. 'For most employees, the whole reason for wanting the WFH or hybrid model is for this sort of flexibility, yes even surfing at 11am,' Ms Calder said, adding that most employees are aware of this. The workplace expert said there needs to be more transparency and communication around this topic. 'Maybe less about 'but I'm more productive and get more work done' to 'WFH allows me flexibility to exercise and better wellbeing',' she said. 'For many people, stepping out for a surf or gym session isn't slacking; it's how they manage energy, focus, and mental clarity. 'The future of work isn't about face time but about trust, output and productivity.' However, that is not to say it is fine to disappear at different times throughout the work day, with Ms Calder saying doing this regularly without context isn't flexibility, it is avoidance. She warned it could even be viewed as an 'abuse of trust'. 'Of course, this doesn't mean logging every step, but in a remote world, transparency is the new visibility. How is your absence perceived?' she said. 'Trust is fragile and some employers will fill in the blanks if you're off-site for too long.' The way the workday looks is continuing to shift, with the rise in remote and hybrid working arrangements playing a major role in that. Given this, Ms Calder said it would be 'unreasonable and unrealistic' to pretend we can draw clear lines between work and our personal lives. However, that doesn't mean structure can be completely abandoned. 'What we need now is adult-to-adult working relationships: clear expectations, honest conversations, and a little grace,' she said. 'If someone's surfing at 11am on a weekday, but getting results, and showing up where it counts? That's not slacking. That's a different way of working, and for a lot of people, it's working better. 'Again, it comes back to accountability and responsibility. That's not a red flag; that's modern work done well.'

Olly Murs praises 'hugely successful' X Factor

Olly Murs has praised The X Factor for launching so many huge stars. The Dance With Me Tonight hitmaker got his big break when he came second to Joe McElderry in the 2009 series of the show - which ended in 2018 after 15 seasons - and he's now praised the legacy of the programme for being a starting place for a string of "big careers" over the years. He told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I think there's no doubt we can all sit here and say that the X Factor was huge. "It's hugely successful for creating such stars, from the One Direction boys, to Harry Styles, Niall has obviously done things, Louis, I mean, all the boys from that band came out and did great stuff. "You know, me, James Arthur, Little Mix, Lucy Spraggan – there's some real, I mean, the list goes on and on, to be honest. Alexandra Burke! There have been endless people who have come. Stacey Solomon, of course, even though she's not doing music, she's doing so well herself. "There's just so many over the years that have just had such big careers. That's the thing. That's what the show was built on, bringing young people off the street or young people an opportunity and a chance to change their lives forever. We took it and embraced it and look where we are now." Meanwhile, Olly will be taking to the stage for the closing headline slot at Hardwick Live festival on 17 August. He will top bill on the Main Stage for the final day of the three-day event at Hardwick Hall, County Durham, following performances from the likes of Tom Walker, The Wailers, Scouting for Girls and Elvana, while the Treehouse Arena will see Toploader, Jamie Lawson and D: Ream take to the stage and Boogie Wonderland will have sets from Dan Shake, Horse Meat Disco, and Brandon Block.
