"India has significant role to play this time": BRICS chairman hails PM Modi's initiatives
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Brazil from July 5 to 8 to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro from July 6 to 7.
Speaking to ANI, he said, 'Due to the aura and initiatives of our PM, India has a significant role to play in BRICS this time.'
Chawla emphasised that India will be the host country of the BRICS summit in 2026 and will chair the grouping for the following year. He said, 'India is going to be the host country of the BRICS summit in 2026, and India will be the Chairman of BRICS for the next one year.'
Chawla noted that India's chairmanship comes at a crucial time, given its neutral stand and substantive role in global trade. He added, 'Keeping in mind the neutral stand and the substantive role that India has in trade today, we are there as the Chairman of BRICS at the right time, in the right atmosphere of the trade world as of now.'
Highlighting the significance of the summit, he noted that, 'this is going to be one of the most historic summits of BRICS so far, and not only because PM Modi is going to be there. But keeping in mind the tariff war that the United States has started all over the world, this summit becomes very significant as far as BRICS countries are concerned.'
'So whatever the summit outcome will be, it will be very historic and very significant this time,' he added.
PM Modi will embark on a five-nation visit from July 2, during which he will attend the BRICS Summit in Brazil and hold meetings with leaders of Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Namibia to strengthen bilateral ties. (ANI)

Modi govt clears scheme to give job market entrants one month's wage of up to Rs 15k as incentive
With an outlay of Rs 99,446 crore, the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme will incentivise the creation of 3.5 crore jobs over two years. Of these, 1.92 crore beneficiaries will be first-timers who have just entered the workforce. The incentive will be given in two instalments—the first one payable after six months of service and the second after 12 months. New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green signal to a scheme giving first-time employees registered with Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) one month's wage of up to Rs 15,000 as incentives, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Tuesday. The benefits of the scheme will apply to jobs created from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2027 and those with salaries of up to Rs 1 lakh will be eligible. . Earlier, presenting Budget 2024-25, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the scheme, a part of the PM's package of five schemes to facilitate employment and skilling and other opportunities for 4.1 crore youth with a total budget outlay of Rs 2 lakh crore. The benefits of the scheme, Vaishnaw said, will focus on the manufacturing sector, aligning with the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme, launched by the government in October 2024. The Centre envisions providing internship opportunities to one crore youth over the next five years under the PM's Internship Scheme to ensure they acquire skills for future employment. Aspirants will train on the job for a year, receiving Rs 5,000 as stipend per month—companies will pay Rs 500 from their CSR funds and the government Rs 4,500. The government will also pay a one-time grant of Rs 6,000 to the youth. The PM's Internship Scheme saw high interest during its launch but has, since then, been stuttering.

Criminal laws framed to protect citizens' rights, punish offenders: Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday termed the enactment of three new criminal laws as the biggest reform in Independent India and said the Narendra Modi government framed them in such a way that all rights of citizens are protected and no criminal goes unpunished. Addressing an event marking one year of the rolling out of the three criminal laws, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), Shah said these laws are going to transform the criminal justice system in the country significantly. "I assure all the citizens of India that it will take a maximum of three years for the full implementation of the new laws. I can also confidently say that anyone can get justice up to the Supreme Court within three years of filing an FIR," he said. The BNS, BNSS and the BSA replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872, respectively. The new laws came into effect on July 1, 2024. The home minister termed the three laws as the biggest reform of Independent India and said that the use of technology will ensure that no criminal can escape punishment after committing a crime. He said justice will definitely be delivered within a stipulated time. "The Narendra Modi government, your chosen government, has made the laws for you and it will protect all your rights," he said. Since July 1, 2024, all fresh FIRs were registered under the BNS. However, cases filed earlier continued to be tried under the old laws till their final disposal. The new laws brought in a modern justice system, incorporating provisions such as Zero FIR, online registration of police complaints, summonses through electronic modes such as SMS and mandatory videography of crime scenes for all heinous crimes. These laws have taken into account the current social realities and modern-day crimes and are going to provide a mechanism to effectively deal with these, keeping in view the ideals enshrined in the Constitution. Shah, who piloted the laws, said the new laws would give priority to providing justice, unlike the colonial-era laws that gave primacy to penal action.

Cabinet approves Employment-Linked Incentive scheme to support formal job generation
With an objective to boost employment generation in formal sectors, especially in manufacturing, the Union Cabinet approved the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme on Tuesday. The scheme, which was announced in the Union Budget for 2024-25, presented in July 2024, has an outlay of Rs 99,446 crore and aims to create 3.5 crore jobs over two years. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the ELI scheme to 'support employment generation, enhance employability and social security across all sectors, with special focus on the manufacturing sector', an official statement said. Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the ELI will be focussed on the manufacturing sector and will have two parts — part A for first timers and part B for sustained employment. Part A of the scheme focuses on first-time employees by providing them a wage subsidy of up to one month's wage, up to a maximum amount of Rs 15,000, while Part B of the scheme has incentives for employers to create additional employment. Out of the total 3.5 crore employees expected to benefit from the scheme, around 1.92 crore persons are seen to be first-timers entering the workforce. Targeting first-time employees registered with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Part A will offer one-month EPF wage up to Rs 15,000 in two instalments. 'Employees with salaries up to Rs 1 lakh will be eligible. The first instalment will be payable after six months of service and the second instalment will be payable after 12 months of service and completion of a financial literacy programme by the employee. To encourage the habit of saving, a portion of the incentive will be kept in a savings instrument of deposit account for a fixed period and can be withdrawn by the employee at a later date,' the statement said. Part B of the scheme is for generating additional employment in all sectors, with a special focus on the manufacturing sector. The employers will get incentives for employees with salaries up to Rs 1 lakh. 'The government will incentivise employers, up to Rs 3,000 per month, for two years, for each additional employee with sustained employment for at least six months. For the manufacturing sector, incentives will be extended to the third and fourth years as well,' the statement said. For EPF wage slab of additional employee up to Rs 10,000, an incentive of Rs 1,000 will be given to the employer; for wage slab of over Rs 10,000 and up to Rs 20,000, a benefit of Rs 2,000 will be given; and for wage over Rs 20,000 (up to salary of Rs 1 lakh/month), an incentive of Rs 3,000 will be provided. Establishments, which are registered with EPFO, will be required to hire at least two additional employees (for employers with less than 50 employees) or five additional employees (for employers with 50 or more employees), on a sustained basis for at least six months, it said. All payments to the first-time employees under Part A of the scheme will be made through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode. Payments to the employers under Part B will be made directly into their PAN-linked accounts. The duration of the scheme will be for two years from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2027. The ELI scheme was first announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Budget 2024-25 as part of the Prime Minister's Package for Employment and Skilling that had a Budget outlay of Rs 2 lakh crore.
