Student Sentenced to 30 Years for Teacher Murder in Morocco

Morocco World5 days ago
Rabat — A court in the Moroccan city of Errachidia has sentenced a student to 30 years in prison for the murder of a teacher at the Applied Technology Institute in Erfoud.
The defendant was also ordered to pay MAD 300,000 ($30,000) in compensation to the victim's family for moral and material damages caused by this tragic crime.
The case dates back to the morning of March 27, when a young man in his early twenties attacked his former teacher in broad daylight.
The defendant, who had previously studied at the same institute, used a pickaxe to strike a female French language teacher multiple times on her head and neck while she walked on a public street in the city of Erfoud.
Witnesses watched the brutal attack unfold before their eyes, sending shockwaves through the local community and educational staff in the region. Many residents expressed disbelief at the savagery of the assault and struggled to understand the attacker's motives.
Security forces quickly arrested the perpetrator following the incident. The public prosecutor's office opened an investigation to uncover the circumstances and potential background of the crime, which sources suggested might have been motivated by revenge.
Emergency services rushed the wounded teacher to the Moulay Ali Cherif Regional Hospital Center in Errachidia before transferring her to Hassan II University Hospital Center in Fez due to the severity of her injuries.
The teacher died on April 13 following two weeks fighting for her life in the intensive care unit.
Her tragic death has triggered growing concern over the safety of educators across Morocco, including the increasing cases of verbal and physical abuse targeting female teachers and staff.
The incident triggered widespread condemnation from educational and union circles. The National Federation of Vocational Training representatives called it 'a heinous crime that targets the dignity and status of education professionals.'

Korean Vlogger's Recorded Interaction with Hijab-Wearing Moroccan Minor Triggers Social Uproar

Marrakech – A Korean vlogger's recording of a hijab-wearing 16-year-old Moroccan girl in Casablanca has erupted into a firestorm of debate across social media platforms. The video, which has since been deleted, documented an interaction that raised serious concerns about both the teenager's behavior and the vlogger's decision to film a minor without consent. In the footage, the conservatively dressed teenage girl approached the Korean content creator while he was touring Casablanca. She initiated a conversation by asking his name and nationality before making inappropriate comments, including complimenting his appearance while describing Moroccans as 'ugly.' The interaction escalated when she pursued him persistently, requested his phone number, and even proposed marriage – all captured on camera. The vlogger appeared visibly uncomfortable with the situation. He politely declined to share his personal contact information, suggesting instead that she follow his official Instagram account. Despite noticing the camera recording their interaction, the hijab-wearing girl continued her inappropriate advances. Alarmingly, despite acknowledging her young age during their conversation, the content creator still chose to film and publish the footage with her face fully visible and unblurred, showing complete disregard for child protection standards. The move appears driven by a thirst for likes and visibility, as Morocco-related content has recently become a shortcut to viral traffic, especially for struggling or low-engagement social media accounts. The incident has prompted important questions about parental supervision and educational guidance. Many observers questioned how a 16-year-old could behave this way in public, pointing to potential gaps in parental oversight, school education, and moral orientation that fails to distinguish between freedom and disrespect. Critics point to the corrosive impact of social media and imported pop culture – particularly K-pop – as key factors distorting Moroccan youths' sense of identity and behavior. These influences have fostered a worrying trend: attempts to gain validation from foreigners by mimicking foreign trends, often at the expense of self-respect and cultural authenticity. The incident lays bare a deepening identity crisis, where admiration for outsiders morphs into self-deprecation. This 'foreigner complex' reflects broader societal challenges, including eroding cultural confidence, fragile self-worth, and a lack of robust local narratives that affirm pride in Moroccan heritage. Filming minors without consent is a serious offense Legal experts note that the vlogger's actions have violated Moroccan law regarding privacy protection and the rights of minors. The Moroccan Penal Code includes strict amendments protecting individuals' privacy, especially children. According to Article 447-1, anyone who intentionally captures, records, broadcasts, or distributes private statements or images without consent faces imprisonment from six months to three years and fines between MAD 2,000 ($200) and MAD 20,000 ($2,000). Article 447-2 further specifies that distributing manipulated content of a person's statements or image without consent, or broadcasting false claims intended to harm someone's reputation, carries prison terms of one to three years and similar fines. Most significantly, Article 447-3 escalates penalties when the victim is a minor, imposing sentences of one to five years and fines from MAD 5,000 ($500) to MAD 50,000 ($5,000). These amendments, which took effect under Law 103.13 concerning violence against women, speak of Morocco's commitment to protecting privacy rights and the rule of law in the digital age, ensuring no one can act freely online without accountability. Following the backlash, the vlogger removed the video and issued an apology to Moroccans. However, the incident has not gone unnoticed, renewing debate about social media's influence on youth behavior and the responsibilities of content creators when filming in public spaces. Social media commentators have stressed that public areas are not extensions of private property where anyone can be recorded and shared online without consequences. Many argue that, while troubling, the incident is an isolated case that shouldn't be taken as indicative of Moroccan society or the behavior of Moroccan girls, particularly those who present themselves as conservative. They caution against drawing broad conclusions and generalizations from a single event, insisting that one individual's actions represent an exception – not the norm – and should not define an entire community. Investigation into Mehdi Ben Barka's disappearance continues in Paris with renewed efforts

In Paris, the investigation into the disappearance of Mehdi Ben Barka, abducted in 1965 outside the Lipp brasserie, is still ongoing. His son, Bachir Ben Barka, was recently interviewed as a civil party. The hearing lasted two hours. He insists that «the investigation is not at a standstill» and praised the dedication of the current investigating judge. «In just one year, she has immersed herself in the case and is determined to move the investigation forward», he told AFP. Opened in 1975, it is the oldest ongoing judicial investigation in France. Mehdi Ben Barka, a leading figure in the anti-colonial movement and a vocal opponent of King Hassan II, was never found. He had been sentenced to death in absentia by Moroccan authorities. A 1967 trial revealed the involvement of Moroccan intelligence, assisted by French police officers and underworld criminals. But for Bachir Ben Barka, the circle of responsibility is wider. «It's now established that Israeli intelligence was involved in the disappearance, and that both French and American services had prior knowledge», he stated, firmly convinced that his father was the victim of a coordinated conspiracy. He condemned the inaction of both French and Moroccan authorities. «I think they're just waiting for all the witnesses to die», he said bitterly, also denouncing the «masquerade» of the French state after its much-publicized declassification of documents already present in the case file. Of the five arrest warrants issued in 2007, only two remain active. The other three suspects have since died, including General Hosni Benslimane and Miloud Tounsi, also known as Larbi Chtouki. According to the family's lawyer, Marie Dosé, time might still play in favor of uncovering the truth. «Some witnesses may finally dare to speak. Some documents might yet be declassified», she said, though with cautious pessimism.

French Couple Loses Parental Rights over Alleged Attempt to ‘Sacrifice' Son in Morocco Desert

Rabat – A court in Bordeaux revoked the parental rights of a French couple, who faced charges of criminal conspiracy after their alleged intention to 'sacrifice' their five-year-old son in Morocco's desert. AFP reported today that the parents were partially acquitted on Thursday, but the court stripped them of their parental authority. The judge said there is no evidence that could support the criminal conspiracy the couple was facing, rejecting the public prosecutor's prison sentences. The prosecutor demanded six years in prison for the father and four years for the mother. The father and mother both receive a suspended sentence of 18 months for failing in their legal responsibilities as parents, with a two-year probationary period and a mandatory psychiatric care order for the father. An acquaintance of the father filed a complaint against him after he allegedly said he and his wife would take their 'possessed' child to Morocco's desert for a sacrifice ritual. During the trial held on Thursday, the father said he never wanted to harm his son. Both couples were arrested in Spain on December 21 in Algeciras, where they were about to board a ferry by car to Tangier. The prosecutor defended the child, saying the parents abandoned their jobs and their home, without packing any clothes. 'Everything was clearly planned, well organized,' the prosecutor said in front of the judge, noting that they threw away their phones and tablets, to possibly avoid being tracked. 'They intended to exorcise their son in Morocco and sacrifice him on Christmas Day, as he could be resurrected like Jesus, you can't make this stuff up,' the prosecutor said. A concerned relative filed a report on the couple's relatives. The report included distributing comments AFP reported. AFP said Florian said he 'encountered God in November 2023,' claiming that God 'asked him to be his armed hand.' The gendarmerie found him naked in the Medoc forest near Bordeaux during a storm. He was later admitted to a psychiatric hospital due to delusional episodes. The son's mother commented on the charges they face, claiming that they planned to go on vacation to Morocco to find peace. 'A rushed departure doesn't mean a deadly plan was being prepared,' the father's lawyer said.
