The founders of the popular parenting platform Big Little Feelings — moms and real-life best friends Kristin Gallant, a parenting coach with a background in maternal and child education, and Deena Margolin, a child therapist specializing in interpersonal neurobiology — are back with more parenting wisdom in Yahoo's new column called , a companion to their podcast, After Bedtime With Big Little Feelings. In the second episode of their show, Gallant and Margolin dive into toddler tantrums — those challenging (and, let's be honest, mortifying) moments that can really test your patience and leave you feeling frustrated and judged by everyone around you. Here, Gallant shares five tips on how to calmly navigate a tantrum.
It always seems to happen at the worst possible time.
You're at Target. Or at the park. Or boarding a plane. And just as you're trying to get out the door, check out with your cart full of stuff or line up at the gate, you feel it coming. The whining and the screaming, followed by the full-body flop to the ground. Your toddler is officially having a moment. And you're officially dying inside.
For me, that's the moment the shame voice kicks in: You're doing it wrong. No one else's kid acts like this. Look around — everyone's staring. They're judging you. Good moms don't have kids who scream in public.
That voice? It's a liar.
Here's what's actually true: Your child's tantrum is not a reflection of your failure. It's a reflection of their developing brain doing exactly what it's wired to do. Let's break that down, along with tips on how to handle a toddler meltdown.
Toddlers live in what's called the 'emotional brain,' aka the limbic system. The rational, logical part of the brain that helps regulate big feelings (the prefrontal cortex) is still in development. Like, years away from being online. That means toddlers physically cannot handle overwhelming emotions in a calm, measured way because the part of the brain that would help them do that isn't built yet.
So when your child loses it over a broken granola bar or the wrong color cup, it's not them being 'bad.' It's their brain being immature and developing exactly on track.
You're not just dealing with a dysregulated kid, you're also dealing with every set of eyes in the grocery store or at the playground on you. The shame. The heat on your face. The desperate urge to make it stop.
Let me say this as clearly as possible: You are not a bad parent because your child is struggling. You are not a failure because your child is having a hard time in public. It's actually the most human parenting moment there is.
Here's a quick survival-mode guide to get through it:
Regulate yourself first: Your child's brain is on fire. If yours catches fire too, it's just two brains in a blaze. Instead, take a deep breath. Literally. Ground yourself in the moment. You're not in danger, you're just in aisle 7.
Forget the audience: The people staring? They've either a) never had a toddler or b) have had one and have just forgotten. Your job is not to manage their discomfort, it's to support your child through theirs.
Get low and stay calm: Kneel down to your child's level. Speak softly. Your calm is contagious, even if it takes time for it to spread.
Skip the lecture: This isn't a teachable moment; it's a survival one. Let the storm pass. You can talk later when everyone has calmed down and is back in their body.
Have a go-to phrase: Something like: 'You're having a hard time. I'm right here with you.' It grounds both of you in connection, and that's what helps tantrums pass faster.
Public tantrums feel like the worst moment of parenting. But they're actually one of the most important ones. Because when we stay present, calm and connected, even in the chaos, we teach our kids that big feelings aren't dangerous and that they're not alone in their hardest moments. And that their emotions are safe with us. That's not a parenting failure. That's parenting at its finest.

Target shifted a smaller, less flamboyant collection of Pride Month merchandise back to make room for patriotic, Independence Day displays in-store and Father's Day online as other major retailers are likewise reducing emphasis on Pride displays and focusing more on other summer shopping holidays, according to CNN. Target's Pride 2025 collection is streamlined to just over 100 clothing, home, food and beverage and stationery items, all exclusively for adults, with the full collection only available online and featuring less prominent displays in some of its stores – last year only about half of Target stores had Pride displays. Target Pride merchandise is facing criticism – calls it 'pathetic' and 'confusing' – with fewer prominent rainbows on display, such as beige sandals with inconspicuous rainbow-stitching detail. Other retailers making short shrift of Pride merchandise include Macy's with an easily overlooked Pride banner way down on its home page, Walmart's home page makes no mention and Gap offers nothing overtly Pride-related online. However, Nordstrom, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister and Kohl's highlight Pride collections on their homepages and brands, including Levi's, Converse, Nike, Puma, Apple, Bombas, Skullcandy, Diesel, MAC cosmetics, Brooklinen, Chubbies, and Jansports, offer significant Pride Month 2025 collections. The National Retail Federation predicts Americans will spend a record $24 billion on Father's Day this year, up 7% from last year, and that nearly 90% participate in July 4th celebrations, which falls on a Friday and is likely to result in a spending boost as well. After Father's Day on June 15 has passed, will retailers lean into Pride Month promotions? Target seems to be in retreat where the LGBTQ community is concerned following Target's 2023 Pride Month displays sparked consumer backlash, calls for boycotts and in-store employee harassment, leading the company to pull Pride displays from some stores that year. As a result, Pride Month merchandise selections were scaled back in 2024 and in-store displays limited to about half of its 2,000 stores. This year, its Pride merchandise appears to be downsized even more and a similar short list of stores will feature displays. In addition, after Target ended its diversity, equity and inclusion program and stopped sharing data with the HRC Corporate Equality Index earlier this year, many diverse communities – including LGBTQ individuals – have felt abandoned by a company that was once seen a champion of minority groups. After ending 2023 down 2%, with a notable 4% comparable sales decline, and revenues basically flat in 2024, Target started 2025 with revenues off 3% and comparable sales down 4% in the first quarter. Its stock price has dropped nearly 30% this year. Numerous reasons have been given for Target's continued underperformance, but its troubles started in 2Q2023 after the Pride Month controversy when comparable sales dropped just over 5%. Before that hit, revenues rose 3% in fiscal 2022. The election of Donald Trump and his administration's strong stance against DEI programs have caused numerous corporations, like Target, to reexamine internal policies that might bring down the government's wrath. With Target facing financial pressures after having alienated more conservative customers in Pride Month 2023 and most recently, those who oppose Target's DEI reversal, it appears that Target is trying to establish itself as a 'big tent' retailer, welcoming a broad range of customers without taking ideological stances that could disenfranchise one group or another. Regrettably, it doesn't seem to be working as financial results flag and calls for boycotts continue. A new survey from the Kearney Consumer Institute, entitled 'Weighting Value with Values,' found more consumers are prioritizing the price/value equation over values-based purchasing decisions. Only about 20% of U.S. consumers believe it more important for brands to voice their values, while 80% prioritize delivering on their quality expectations. Given this 80/20 spilt, there are pitfalls for brands that get out over their skis where controversial issues are concerned, such as boycotts. Notably, a surprisingly high 39% of consumers said they have participated in a brand boycott over the past 12 months. 'You're damned if you do, damned if you don't because while many people say brands should voice their values, but then they can use that against you,' shared Katie Thomas who leads the KCI internal think tank. Right-leaning Turning Point USA contributor Morgonn McMichael praised Target in an Instagram post for showing 'more American pride' this year with its family-oriented, patriotic displays front and center in her local Target store. 'If there is anything indicating a cultural shift in our country, it's the fact that Target's Pride Collection is now this small, while Fourth of July, Independence Day is celebrated galore,' she said. 'I Don't Understand You': Nick Kroll, Andrew Rannells movie inspired by adoption fraud story from filmmakers

While Nick Kroll and Andrew Rannells voice some pretty hysterical characters in Big Mouth, they're now sharing the screen in the horror-comedy I Don't Understand You (now in theatres). Written and directed by married filmmakers David Joseph Craig and Brian Crano, the movie had a particularly interesting starting point. In I Don't Understand You Kroll and Rannells play a couple, Dom and Cole, who have just fallen victim to adoption fraud, but things are looking up. A pregnant woman named Candace (Amanda Seyfried) thinks they're the right fit for the family to adopt her child. But just before that happens, Dom and Cole take a romantic Italian vacation. Things take a turn when they get lost outside of Rome, trying to find a restaurant. As their stranded in an unknown location, the trip turns to bloody Italian chaos. As Craig and Crano identified, the first portion of the movie, up until the couple gets stuck going to the restaurant, is quite close to the real experience the filmmakers had. "We were adopting a child. We had been through an adoption scam, which was heartbreaking, and then had a completely different experience when we matched with the birth mother of our son," Crano told Yahoo. "But we found out that we were going to have him literally like two days before we were going on our 10th anniversary trip." "And we were like, 'Shit, should we not go?' But we decided to do it, and you're so emotionally opened up and vulnerable in that moment that it felt like a very similar experience to being in a horror movie, even though it's a joyful kind of situation." A key element of I Don't Understand You is that feeling of shock once the story turns from a romance-comedy to something much bloodier. It feels abrupt, but it's that jolt of the contrast that also makes that moment feel particularly impactful to watch. "Our sense of filmmaking is so ... based on surprise," Craig said. "As a cinephile, my main decade to go to are outlandish '90s movies, because they just take you to a different space, and as long as you have a reality to the characters that are already at hand, you can kind of take them wherever." "Personally, the situation of adoption was a constant jolt [from] one emotion to another that we felt like that was the right way to tell a story like this, which was literally, fall in love with a couple and then send them into a complete nightmare. And I think you can only get that if you do it abruptly, and kind of manically." While Rannells and Kroll have that funny and sweet chemistry the story needs, these were roles that weren't written for them. But it works because Crano and Craig know how to write in each other's voices so well, that's where a lot of the dialogue is pulled from. Additionally, the filmmakers had the "creative trust" in each other to pitch any idea, as random as it may have seemed, to see if it could work for the film. "When you're with somebody you've lived with for 15 years, there is very little that I can do that would embarrass me in front of David," Crano said. "So that level of creative freedom is very generative." "We were able to screw up in front of each other a lot without it affecting the rest of our day," Craig added. Of course, with the language barrier between the filmmakers and the Italian cast, it was a real collaboration to help make the script feel authentic for those characters. "All of the Italian actors and crew were very helpful in terms of being like, 'Well I feel like my character is from the south and wouldn't say it in this way.' And helped us build the language," Crano said. "And it was just a very trusting process, because neither of us are fluent enough to have that kind of dialectical specificity that you would in English." "It was super cool to just be watching an actor perform a scene that you've written in English that has been translated a couple of times, but you still completely understand it, just by the generosity of their performance." For Craig, he has an extensive resume of acting roles, including projects like Boy Erased and episodes of Dropout. Among the esteemed alumni of the Upright Citizens Brigade, he had a writing "itch" for a long time, and was "in awe" of Crano's work as a director. "Truthfully, in a weird way, it felt like such a far off, distant job, because everything felt really difficult, and I think with this project it just made me understand that it was just something I truly love and truly wanted to do," Craig said. "I love the idea of creative control and being in a really collaborative situation. Acting allows you to do that momentarily, but I think like every other job that you can do on a film is much longer lasting, and I think that's something I was truly seeking." For Crano, he also grew up as a theatre kid, moving on to writing plays in college. "The first time I got laughs for jokes I was like, 'Oh, this is it. Let's figure out how to do this,'" he said. "I was playwriting in London, my mom got sick in the States, so I came back, and I started writing a movie, because I was living in [Los Angeles] and I thought, well there are no playwrights in L.A., I better write a movie.'" That's when Crano found a mentor in Peter Friedlander, who's currently the head of scripted series, U.S. and Canada, at Netflix. "I had written this feature and ... we met with a bunch of directors, great directors, directors I truly admire, and they would be like, 'It should be like this.' And I'd be like, 'Yeah, that's fine, but maybe it's more like this.' And after about five of those Peter was like, 'You're going to direct it. We'll make some shorts. We'll see if you can do it.' He just sort of saw it," Crano recalled. "It's nice to be seen in any capacity for your ability, but [I started to realize] this is not so different from writing, it's just sort of writing and physical space and storytelling, and I love to do it. ... It is a very difficult job, because it requires so much money to test the theory, to even see if you can." But being able to work together on I Don't Understand You, the couple were able to learn things about and from each other through the filmmaking process. "David is lovely to everyone," Crano said. "He is much nicer than I am at a sort of base level, and makes everyone feel that they can perform at the best of their ability. And that's a really good lesson." "Brian literally doesn't take anything personally," Craig added. "Almost to a fault." "And it's very helpful in an environment where you're getting a lot of no's, to have a partner who's literally like, 'Oh, it's just no for now. Great, let's move on. Let's find somebody who's going to say yes, maybe we'll come back to that no later.' I'm the pessimist who's sitting in the corner going, 'Somebody just rejected me, I don't know what to do.' ... It just makes you move, and that's that's very helpful for me."
